and there is no such thing as "duck tape"!

Or maybe there is, but it would surely be for very specific uses only.

That is all.

I know it should be duct tape. But you can't make the comedy quack if someone asks you for the correct thing.

alemci · 04/11/2011 15:21

I always thought it was duck tape until by DH explained. It was a bit like Rawl plugs which I thought were raw plugs.

In fact there was a book I read recently and the main character was making a joke out of these things.

It is a silver tape isn't it?

alemci · 04/11/2011 15:23

also the Allum key. I thought it was Allan too TBH.

like the car free wheeling as opposed to three wheeling. One wheel up in the air whilst the clutch is disengaged.

my good pal is a roadie and his motto is "if you can't fix it with gaffa tape you haven't used enough"

thousandDenier · 04/11/2011 15:25

Duck, Alum, Raw... Clearly lots of DIY enthusiasts are also mumblers.

tearsbeforebreakfast · 04/11/2011 15:26

it IS an allen key. Also known as a hex key.

issynoko · 04/11/2011 15:27

I agree. Duct tape. DH gets his pants in a twist about 'duck tape' all the time. But he also says 'plaggy bag' which gives me hives.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 15:28

Well yes, but 'gaffa' may be a specific roadie thing - isn't there a screen technician called a gaffer? Probably makes entire sets using only a duck and some tape.

I don't use a Hoover or a Biro. I use a vacuum cleaner and a ball point pen. I don't get into a Volkwagen or a Kia. I get into a car. I think people who use a Vax or Electrolux vacuum cleaner are just ignorant if they call it a Hoover.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 15:29

God, what's a 'plaggy bag'?

Tee2072 · 04/11/2011 15:31

It is Allen Key, or hex key.

It is duct tape, for sealing your ducts.

It used to come in only silver and black, now it comes in many many colours.

And I blow my nose using a kleenex. Grin

alemci · 04/11/2011 15:31

do you not hoover up though. My mil calls it sweeping up which really gets on my nerves. I do not use a broom to vacuum my carpets I'll have you know LOL.

grovel · 04/11/2011 15:33

I get fuct off when people call it duck tape.

MadameBoo · 04/11/2011 15:33

We call it gaffa tape.

I used to be in a band.

BelfastBloke · 04/11/2011 15:36

Nice, grovel

MadameBoo · 04/11/2011 15:37

I am clearly a saddo with no life but here you go: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaffer_tape

Cartoonjane · 04/11/2011 15:37

....and did you know if you stick duct tape over a varuca (not sure of spelling), and leave it for a while (we left ours several weeks) the varuca will come off! Someone told me and it worked on a really stubborn one on my daughter's toe.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 15:37

Yes it was rather neat.Smile

Well known band was it MB?

OP posts:
MadameBoo · 04/11/2011 15:38

And I am also quite wrong as they are not the same: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 15:39

I knew Gaffer tape was a technician thing. Gosh my tape-related knowledge is broad and ever-growing.

OP posts:
MadameBoo · 04/11/2011 15:39

I wish Switty. We tried! But no, I'm not one of those famous mumsnetters or anything :o

NhameCage · 04/11/2011 15:40

What is elephant tape compared to duct tape?

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 15:40

Aww, so you're incognito. Say no more

OP posts:
ConstanceNoring · 04/11/2011 15:40

I believe the brand duck tape came about due to the waterproof properties of their duct tape.
