Pedant's refuge: I have to get it out, but not on the threads themselves as I'll get ripped to shreds it's not polite. It's safe here.

Sorry - you had to be there really ! Sad

I'll go and stand in a corner now.

I'm with you, Suda - I love Ireland, they have their own logic. E.g. waiting at a train station, an announcement came over the tannoy: "The train from Bray is currently ten minutes late, but by the time it gets here it will've caught up with itself."

Talking of Irish road markings. My favourite road signs are just outside Westport on a series of bends. The first one says 'slow', the second one says 'dead slow'. I always hope that there is another one saying 'I mean it now'!

I had to laugh when I saw the post about 'get' and 'can I have', because when I was little, if I dared to ask 'Please can I have...', I was pounced on by both my mother and my aunt.

In tones bristling with Victorian 'froideur' I was told 'You can, but whether or not you may, is another matter'.

Ouch!

I am sure this one is on here already but I would like to scream into the pillow again about the word 'text'.

If you must use it as a verb, please please please conjugate it properly when writing in the past tense. I cannot bear it when people are telling a story and say (or write) "...so then I text my boyfriend and he said that..."

ARGH!
