I got offered a silver necklace but as i dont wear jewlery ask for some silver cutlery for the set i had been getting from my nan for birthday and christmas over the years. I have a lovely set i collected over the years. Just need the posh house and reason to use

Money to go away travelling with friends was what I got, my young cousin got ticket for a festival. I do think experiential gifts are the best.
There are some funky tasteful charm bracelets around?

MissMoopy · 02/09/2009 17:36

My first car, bless them.

18ths were not really celebrated much in my day [oldie emoticon] - it was still 21st birthdays which were a big deal even though the age of majority had changed to 18 by then (I'm not that old!)

Think I just got normal type presents. I got a silver bracelet from my parents for my 21st which I still have but don't wear very often...

Is she having a party or going on holiday with friends? If so and you are funding it, then a piece of jewelry she can keep should be sufficient. Maybe diamond stud earrings if you can stretch to that?

brimfull · 02/09/2009 18:58

she hasn't decided whether to have a party or not

thanks for the ideas

diamond earrings is a nice idea -cheap diamond earrings preferably

All my possessions neatly thrown into bin bags
and the locks changed

NervousNutty · 02/09/2009 19:04

I had a stereo off my mum and had my room decorated as a pressie from my dad.

UnquietDad · 02/09/2009 19:04

The things I got won't help much. Because I got a Sony twin-deck radio cassette player, and a selection of tapes. As I recall, they included "Solitude Standing" by Suzanne Vega, "The Joshua Tree" by U2 and "Lionheart" by Kate Bush.

Plus several books.

My Mum had a lovely necklace which she gave to my sister on her 18th then had it copied for mine using my birthstone.

MmeLindt · 02/09/2009 19:06

I really cannot remember. I know I got a silver Rennie MacIntosh necklace for my 21st (that was stolen last year, the bastards)

LaDiDaDi · 02/09/2009 19:10

A cheque for 5k (to help me through Uni) which they had obviously saved very hard for and which I did appreciate but I would have actually been just as happy with a much smaller value present to keep.

For my 21st I got a gold necklace from them and a matching bracelet from my grandparents.

bodiddly · 02/09/2009 19:15

a black and white portable tv!

Overmydeadbody · 02/09/2009 19:17

God I can't remember that far back.

Something I was in to at the time no doubt.

OnlyWantsOneDoesntLikeDM · 02/09/2009 19:17

I got a brand new car love it, still have it....

blametheparents · 02/09/2009 19:20

brimfull · 02/09/2009 19:21

I got a sewing machine too - just used it yesterday! Scary to think it is nearly 20 years old!

Flower3545 · 21/09/2009 16:24

My dad, bless him, proudly presented me with a copy of "Little Women"

It was early 70's and I'd convinced myself he would buy me/give me the cash for the huge platform soled shoes I yearned for/never shut up about.

Summoning up a bright grateful smile ranks high in my "well done Flower" archives

nappyaddict · 21/09/2009 16:27

For my 18th and 21st I got a ring, laptop and ipod. I said I didn't want a bracelet or necklace as I always manage to break them and only buy cheap ones now or earrings as I always lose one. For some reason I never lose rings though.

rolledhedgehog · 21/09/2009 16:34

I got a gold bangle of my choosing which I lost....did not go down well!

What about a sweetie bracelet for your DD (does not have to be a real Links of London one) and then she/you can add charms with other life events. Also they are harder to lose than my bangle!
