How many pieces of sushi each?

18th birthday party for dd1.
12 friends. How many pieces of sushi each? I'm in danger or horribly over ordering because I really don't want to go under, and also I am hoping to hoover up some leftovers myself.

Do they all like sushi?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/10/2023 17:26

Any other food around?

heldinadream · 24/10/2023 17:26

Is it just sushi, or is it sushi plus pizza followed by cake? Or something?

MrsMara · 24/10/2023 17:27

If they like Sushi then easily 8 pieces each, plus a few bowls of Edamame.

Undethetree · 24/10/2023 17:27

Well what else are you serving? Is it nibbles/main meal canapé? How many vegans are there? How on earth can anyone know without more context?!

GladysHeeler · 24/10/2023 17:29

Loads. Teenagers eat like horses. Eight sounds about right.

WASZPy · 24/10/2023 17:33

I can knock back a box of 12 if it is all I am having.

Totalwasteofpaper · 24/10/2023 17:35

8-10 depending on size

Dragon roll /inside out roll only 8 pp
Dragon roll /inside out and maki / sashimi 10 pp

Chewbecca · 24/10/2023 17:35

It's gonna be a bit pricier than a few pizzas, that's for sure. I'd allow 10 if you hope for leftovers. How about adding some ITSU frozen gyoza and/or bao buns to top up and reduce the quantity you need?

GrumpyPanda · 24/10/2023 17:36

For a teenager party I'd go for a wrap your own sushi buffet. Much more fun. Just get nori sheets, various wrapping ingredients, mirin and sushi rice - order online if necessary.

Takoneko · 24/10/2023 17:50

Depends on the type of sushi but I’d say 8-10 may not be enough for a bunch of teenagers.

When I go out for sushi dinner we usually order 16 pieces of hosomaki and 16 dragon-style rolls between 4 of us… so 8 pieces each. But that’s with gyoza, korokke, miso soup and takoyaki on the side. We are a group of 4 women in their 30s-50s. I’d say teenagers (particularly if there’s teenage boys in the guest list) will demolish 10 pieces each if there’s no other sides.

I think the suggestions to do some gyoza and bao buns to bulk it out is a good idea. You could even do some fries and get some furikake seasoning to shake over them if you’re worried about people going hungry.

WaxhamSeals · 24/10/2023 17:57

Any alternative for those who won’t eat sushi?

Overthebow · 24/10/2023 18:19

What’s with it or will it just be sushi? Depending on the size as sushi pieces are variable, I’d get 10-12 per person plus edamame, followed by cake.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/10/2023 18:25

A lot.
Will there be alcohol involved?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 24/10/2023 18:29

10? Shock My friend and I get a 50 platter when it's the two of us and 10 year old DS.

ArtyStripedSocks · 24/10/2023 19:17

Thank you all!

Yes, I think I'll go for 10 pieces per person (and some extra for me and DD2 to sneak later) plus some extra bits.

Much appreciated!

Have you checked they all like sushi?

It's a marmite food.

ArtyStripedSocks · 24/10/2023 21:48

@MrTiddlesTheCat this is impressive 😆💪
I'll definitely go over. Thinking about it I had a box of 8 the other and it felt like a light snack.

I thought I was going a bit mental reading the other replies. My kids would have 10 pieces as a starter. I hope someone tells them they’re only getting 8 bites each before they start, the fast eaters will be on their 14th while some are finishing their 2nd and there’s no more left

ArtyStripedSocks · 24/10/2023 22:27

Okay, I'm going big. 👍
This has been very helpful.

Not sure it is these days.

BitofaStramash · 24/10/2023 22:37

@MyBlueDiary

Whilst very fashionable plenty of people wouldn't eat it.

Risky if that's the only food being provided.

Takoneko · 24/10/2023 23:41

I agree with @MyBlueDiary. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t eat any sushi. My sister has just about the most restrictive fussy diet of anyone I know and even she’ll eat some kappamaki in a pinch. She wouldn’t eat anything with fish in it but sushi doesn’t have to involve fish. Sushi is mostly plain-ish rice, which most people will eat.

I know other people who are slightly less fussy who, again, have an issue with fish (especially raw) but will eat a tuna mayo or corn mayo gunkan, beef kalbi nigiri or the western style sushi with fried chicken in the rolls.

I think among 18 year olds, most will eat some sort of sushi.

Zzizzisnotzeproblem · 24/10/2023 23:48

Add some miso soup, and rice balls beans/seaweed salad. If you want to push the boat out some teriyaki beef/

Peoplemakemedespair · 25/10/2023 09:08

What do you mean when you say 8 pieces? Do you mean they can order 8 things each, for eg nigiri which will come with 2-8 small pieces or maki that will usually come in a few small pieces etc? Or literally just 8 small pieces each (as pictured). If it’s the latter my 5yo would comfortably finish off 3 of these boxes for lunch and be starving again 45 mins later.
