Pref female, pref a bit outrageous/distinctive

Ones I've come up with so far are Madonna, Bananarama and Toyah

anyone else?

Cyndi Lauper? Tina Turner (if you've got the legs).

Maidamess · 03/01/2008 20:53

Siouxie Sioux? Lots of black eyeliner needed.

Whizzz · 03/01/2008 20:54

woman from the Thompson twins with the HUGE Legionnaires hat?

kate Bush

ChipButty · 03/01/2008 20:56

Alison Moyet? Grace Jones? Cyndi Lauper sounds your best bet for something outrageous.

purpleturtle · 03/01/2008 20:57

Does it have to be pop stars? I know a couple who went to an 80s party as Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

Onlyaphase · 03/01/2008 20:57

Those girls from the Human League with the odd bobs maybe? Or Boy George would be easy to do...

janeite · 03/01/2008 20:58

Early Madonna would be good, or one of Pepsi and Shirley. Or you could go cross-gender as Prince, Michael Jackson or one of Spandeau Ballet. I always quite wanted to look like one of Strawberry Switchblade and they are easy to do too.

Onlyaphase · 03/01/2008 20:58

Blondie?

TherewasnoMOOMattheINn · 03/01/2008 20:58

Cyndi Lauper is a good call

Would love to do Tina Turner - can do the clomping-doing-a-poo dance, but haven't got the legs, sadly

Am also loving the idea of cross-gender as The Great Purple One, circe Purple Rain! Although I am about 5ft taller than him

margoandjerry · 03/01/2008 21:01

I dare you to go as Cher.

MAMAZON · 03/01/2008 21:03

i did a generic 80's fashion failure for a party a little while ago.

give me a minute and i shall add teh picture to my profile (for a limited period only) i looked ridiculous but everyone loved the costume

TherewasnoMOOMattheINn · 03/01/2008 21:04

MAMAZON - can't see your 80s pic yet. (But your LOs are gorgeous!)

Maidamess · 03/01/2008 21:15

I love the clomping-doing -a -pooh -dance! Bung some fishnets on, red lippy, you're good to go!

janeite · 03/01/2008 21:20

Mamazon - those gloves are sooooo tasteful!!!

MAMAZON · 03/01/2008 21:26

they were fab.

everything came from either Primark or Claires accesories so the whole outfit was about £15.

plus most of the bits are in a dressing up box that Dd plays with.

what (thankfully) you cant see is that i was wearing purple sparkly leggings with a white ra ra skirt over the top, pink and silver leg warmers and bright pink pumps.

as i say i look awful, but everyone loved the costume and it was good fun

ahundredtimes · 03/01/2008 21:29

Oliva Newton John,

Anyone from Fame.

I went to a party as Madonna in her Desperately Seeking Susan phase, it was v. good fun. Claire's Accessories.

You either do that kind of 80s thing, or let rip with the day-glo headbands and leg warmers.

gigglewitch · 03/01/2008 21:30

reading the op my first thought was bananarama - head to toe in pink and heaps of bangles and beads, oh dont forget the tasteless ear-rings. obv you are already well on the way to true eighties tastelessness.

or t'pau. now she was scary with all that black makeup.

janeite · 03/01/2008 21:34

Talking of which, does anybody know if it is possible to buy clip on earrings anywhere? We are having a fancy dress party (see y thread from a couple of days ago) and I have decided I need some huuuuge hoop style earrings but don't have pierced ears.

Mooma - I think a v tall Great Purple one could be fun but I think we need a pic in order to give more ideas!

gigglewitch · 03/01/2008 21:51

janeite - if you cant find any (but maybe try matalan?) i can go a-hunting, i used to have loads and they are all in a big tasteless eighties box somewhere. they wouldn't be too hard to post to loan to you would they?

TherewasnoMOOMattheINn · 03/01/2008 21:53

Fab costume MAMAZON!

janeite - I'd buy big curtain rings if I were you and tie cotton loops to them and hang them off your whole ear! Or attach the curtain rings to some clip-ons you already have (in case the cotton saws your ears off in all the excitement)

Have found some choice pics of various 80s disasters:
nice fanjo-cover
nice hair
