What did you get for your 40th birthday present!?

I have my 40th birthday coming up and my husband and parents keep asking me what I would like for a gift and my mind just goes blank. We are going to go out for a nice meal etc but I’m so stuck for present suggestions. I’m very lucky to feel pretty contented in my day to day life so things I would really like are things that are just too expensive for a gift. Any inspiration much appreciated!!

A mulberry oxblood bag I love it

I got a lovely garden bench that I wanted. I didn't look after it very well and the wood got dry and cracked. It was a shame as I loved it and my husband who bought it for me died 8 years ago when I was 48.
The most wonderful thing is my new partner (2years) knowing how much I love it has spent the last few weeks sanding and revarnishing it. It looks as good as new again.

Beautiful earrings from Tiffany's!! In the blue box and everything, I was very happy!!

Makegoodchoices · 19/08/2020 15:00

@Musicaltheatremum that’s so lovely!

I had a trip to Bruges from the husband, Euros to spend from parents and a beautiful jewellery set from a group of my friends.

An eternity ring .

Nothing! Finally managed this after many many years of trying.
(After all what is the point of people buying 'stuff' for an unmaterialistic person who doesn't like going out or eating out? )

DonLewis · 19/08/2020 15:09

Fablou bags are my little extravagance in cases like this. So many beautiful colours.

Expensive perfume.

I have trouble with shoes (I'm a 43/44) and had a few pairs instead of one.

I'd have like a lumea, but at £400....

I had a spa day with my sister. It was lovely as I've never had one before. For my 30th I went to see a West end show, that was great too.

Ladies thank you so much for the inspiration. I love the idea of a trip but under present circumstances it might not be the best plan! Might have a look into something from Tiffany or a nice handbag! 😍😍

Married!

An eternity ring

My 40th is coming up later this year and I'm leaning towards asking for a subscription to my local florists for their weekly flower club.

Nat6999 · 20/08/2020 14:33

A nail technician course from then husband & a rotary watch from my parents.

PenguinBarnotBird · 20/08/2020 14:39

A painting or a nice print, too expensive for me to buy for myself but a wonderful present. I got a voucher from close friends for a gallery for £400 and chose my own print from there. Makes me smile every time I look at the picture on my wall.

mumofBeth · 20/08/2020 14:46

I got a dog. Not a quick decision and I chose him myself but he is lived and spoiled by everyone.

mumofBeth · 20/08/2020 14:46

Loved, not lived!

CrocodileFondue · 20/08/2020 22:36

I'd really love a weekend off being a wife and a mother. I want to go to a strange city, mooch round the shops, galleries and cafes, watch shitty tv and have a long bath in my hotel. Just me. Bliss!

I'm not sure I can ask for that though, does it sound really weird? Blush

MaureenSowerbutts · 20/08/2020 22:38

Surprise weekend in Amsterdam

SilverOtter · 20/08/2020 22:43

A lovely new camera😍

lovelilies · 20/08/2020 22:47

@CrocodileFondue I feel exactly the same. It won't happen as there's not really anyone to buy me it, but it's what I'd most like

rednsparkley · 20/08/2020 22:50

My 40th coincided with our 10th wedding anniversary and I got a Cartier Tank which I had lusted after for absolutely years.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 20/08/2020 22:52

I’m not 40 for a couple of years but I’m hoping to get a Dales pony foal 😆

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 20/08/2020 22:52

@lovelilies @CrocodileFondue
Do it!! I went to New York with my mum & left the kids at home with ex-h (their dad)

I went to NY & got a Tiffany necklace with money from work colleagues/aunts & uncles, climbed the O2 with my best friend & on actual birthday went up the Shard & to the theatre with the kids. My 40th was awesome...

My DH turned 40 last year. We went to Paris for the weekend, which he knew about. He’d had his eye on a Tag Heuer watch for a while so I called ahead to the watch shop in the airport to see if they stocked it and they did so I got him to try it on as we were going through the airport shopping area and got it for him as a surprise. He was well chuffed! Doubt we’d be doing same thing this year as we’re expecting our first baby 👶!
