How do iIcreate a Dinosaur party?

Blu · 25/06/2007 14:58

Please? For DS's 6th birthday. He has told all his friends he is having a dinosaur party. So far i have thought of
Dinosaur cake (but not sure of the detail, i.e how to make it)
A sort of Musical Excavation - get one of those excavation kits - a model dinosaur in plaster, and they have to pass the chisel around and chip like mad when the music stops.
Treasure hunt - using bones or fake bones(?)

Any ideas at all for food, games, activities, party bags, all gratefully received.

I have been browsing in the MN Village Green Cupcake Marquee - any experts from the competition like to advise me?

thank you!

I made a dino cake a few years back for my nephew. I dyed the sponge mix red and cooked a good sized round one, when cooled (best to leave for 24 hours to get a bit solid) cut in half so you have two semi circles, stick together with butter icing and stand on the cut edge to make the body/head shape.

Cover with a layer of warmed jam or butter icing and lay over rolled out X coloured icing leaving enough at the back to form into a tail. Make some into front and back legs sticking on with wate/cocktail sticks (remember to remove before serving)

I cant really remember what I did for the face, I think I stuck jelly diamonds in two rows down his back and made a ruff round the back of his neck with them - good luck

A dino cake (rather nice one) can be purchased from Waitrose. Think it's about £15.00 ish

Haven't received a CAT Blu, but the tablecloth is yours if you want it....f.o.c

Blu · 27/06/2007 12:06

yes, sorry - I got distracted by my job (SO inconvenient)...will CAT later.

For some reason I don't seem to get messages whenpeople cat me, if you still want the dinosaurs we are legoates @ aol . com
But will understand if you have decided to go with ready made cake!
Now my job must interfere...

collision · 27/06/2007 17:28

CAT me too....cutters are waiting for you!

flibbertyjibbet · 27/06/2007 18:49

Do you think we put her off with all the suggestions and sent her into party overdrive collapse mode with all the pressure to be an alpha +++++ party mummy??

gscrym · 27/06/2007 18:52

Be careful with the excavation thing. DS has had a couple and they're really hard. Both were like bricks. DH ended up soaking them in a bucket to get the bits out.

You could get a pack of that jelli-baf stuff and make a dino swamp where they can rummage for goodies.

Blu · 27/06/2007 22:05

Flib, I am currently overwhelemed by my pathetic attempts to go into alpha-mummy overdrive and get some baking done for the school fair on Saturday...and of course terrified to e mail anyone in case you all stalk me and leap out from under my stairs dressed as velocoraptors!

Actually, we had one of those excavation things from woolworths, and after DS painstakingly excavated it, there was nothing at all inside!

OP posts:
Blu · 27/06/2007 22:05

what on earth id jelli-baf?

Hmm I haven't got a cat yet, if you still want the little dinos then email me on the address I posted below, or let me know if you don't want them please? I did check the spam folder but you weren't hiding in there.
Realised this morning that i have six whole months now till DS1's birthday to plan mega dino party with all the ideas on here!

Marina · 28/06/2007 14:44

OMG blu our local Woolies had dino pinatas to fill last week do you want me to see if they still stock them...
Have resisted temptation to say you get in plenty of vino and stick Rum Sodomy and the Lash on the Dansette and I'm sure she'll turn up presently

IlanaK · 28/06/2007 15:19

We are having a dino party for my about to be 6 year old next weekend. I am afraid that I took the easy way out and we have a puppet lady coming to entertain them.

However, I did find some great things on this site: www.cakescookiesandcraftsshop.co.uk/ I got cupcake cases with dinosaurs on, edible green dino sprinkles for the tops of cakes and dino cutters.

Instead of one big cake, i am doing cupcakes decorated with the edible sprinkles and then in the middle of each one i am putting a little plastic dinosaur that they can keep.

Blu · 29/06/2007 16:18

Marina!

Damn!? Woolies? I have just ordered a Triceratops pinata from a website - bet the Woolies one was cheaper! But you do need 4 violent adults and a baseball bat to destroy a woolies pinata.

Ilana - thanks, i'm on to the bun cases....and Flibbertyjibbet - I have e mailed the ady on here as well as the CAT.

Has anyone else had thier CATS?
