Any ideas for a PIRATE PARTY?

Hi there,

I know this is really sad but its my DS's 1st birthday in August and I am planning the party. Its theme is pirates. We have: loads of balloons (pirate balloons and also black balloons with skulls and crossbones)

life size palm tree. Smaller palm tree. Several blow up parrots. The cake is a black skull and crossbones. I have eye patches etc and stuff like that...

I have one game to play - pin the treasure chest on the 'X' or something like that.

Now I am debating. Do I hire the village hall for £100 or have 40ish people at my house.

I know this is OTT for a 1st birthday but I cant help it I am so excited and I love throwing parties. Does anyone have any ideas for the party and also opinions on whether or not I should hire the hall? I am so not rich but I dont want all those people in my house.

I am wincing at the thought of skull-and-crossbones cake for a 1yo

I will be watching your thread in order to steal ideas for ds1's 5th though!

Have you got a sandpit? Could you fill a big tub/paddling pool with sand and bury "treasure" in it it? I'm thinking of chocolate coins, little pressies etc

How about making a parrot pinata for the kids to bash?

Village Hall. DS is 6 I speak from experience.

funnypeculiar · 06/03/2007 20:02

40 people ... defn village hall unless you have massivo house...

The cake is FAB! I doubt Alex will eat much of it. Its a black background and a while skull and crossbones. I wish I could post a pic of it here it looks really cute. What about it is winceable?

I like the treasure/sandpit idea! I might get one of those.

I plan on savign all this pirate stuff and throwing him another pirate party when he is 5.

The thing is, I had to throw SOME party. So I needed a theme. And I dont do things by halves especially parties. I am known in my circle as THE party throwing person. I love it. Most of all I Am so excited about his birthday!

Oooh I love a party too! Trouble with August birthday is you can't guarantee the weather like you can in January when you know its gonna be grim, so I think you will have to bite the bullet and have a hall.

You could have walking the plank game (obviously on the floor though!) Or how about a treasure hunt if you are in a hall? You could hide clues and pressies.

I'll be back if I think of anything else & I don't think its OTT either!

If EVERYONE came it would be a total of 44 people. That is 29 adults and 15 children. My house is NOT huge and I dont have a garden I only have a small courtyard.

Walk the plank into the paddling pool!

Greensleeves · 06/03/2007 20:04

I just find it a rather violent/disturbing image to associate with a tiny child. I don't like seeing small kids with it on their clothes either. But then I am a notorious namby-pamby ninny about this sort of thing, so ignore me

Will try to think of more ideas for you. I LOVE children's parties

eenybeeny · 06/03/2007 20:04

thanks princesscc and everyone for posting! What is the walk the plank game?

eenybeeny · 06/03/2007 20:05

oh greeny its ok I understand. I dont actually like it much on clothes either but this cake is fab. I can email you a pic if you want. my email is senatorvass at gmail dot com

Pin the eye patch on the pirate would be better than the treasure chest idea I reckon

I assume some older children are coming, btw? 1 year olds playing "pin the tail" sounds fairly scary.

You could play pass the treasure chest instead of pass the parcel and have each child reach inside to remove a small wrapped present

I think Greeny is wincing at the violent death reference in the symbol of the skull and crossbones but each to their own

Have fun whatever you do

eenybeeny · 06/03/2007 20:05

how do you perch a plank over a paddling pool?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 06/03/2007 20:06

oops I was a bit slow there channeling Greeny but I got it right at least

eenybeeny · 06/03/2007 20:07

its almost all older children there are only 2 other babies and they probably wont be playing any games.

wow I had no idea the cake wouldnt go down well with everyone! I still love it though. Its kinda cartoonish like casper the friendly ghost.

I've no idea we'll have to work on that one! I was thinking maybe paint some lining paper to look like wood and..... there the idea stops!! You've got time to work on it though!

How about getting them to make their own hats?

Greensleeves · 06/03/2007 20:08

You could draw a rudimentary map of the hall/garden/whatever, featuring your palm trees/sandpit or whatever you've got in there, with an X that marks the spot where a slightly larger wrapped prize is hidden?

eenybeeny · 06/03/2007 20:09

ooooh I LOVE IT!!!!! Thank you ALL of you please keep the ideas coming!

btw, surely most kids know who Captain Jack Sparrow is, so the cake will be well in fashion!

Greensleeves · 06/03/2007 20:11

Who is Captain Jack Sparrow?

SherlockLGJ · 06/03/2007 20:11

I have to say I agree with Greeny, on the subject of a skull and cross bones for a baby.

How about ramming something like this full of gold coins, you would get serious street cred from the younger children. ???

Greensleeves · 06/03/2007 20:12

Pin the parrot on the pirate?

FrannyandZooey · 06/03/2007 20:13

No no Greeny, eyepatch deffo better

Make and decorate a pirate hat? Face painting?

princesscc · 06/03/2007 20:19

Oh dear greenselves, maybe its just me then! I thought everyone knew that Jonny Dieppe plays him in Pirates of the Carribean! Part 3 out in the summer.

Greensleeves · 06/03/2007 20:20

What certificate is that princesscc? I'm pretty sure my 4yo and his friends haven't seen it!

SherlockLGJ · 06/03/2007 20:22

Greeny

LGJ pats the couch, Come and sit next to me, and let me whisper in your ear. I have no idea who Jack Sparrow is either.
