New thread :) Everyone welcome.

OP posts:

I'd love to do m&s christmas but i bet you most stuff has hidden gluten do you? Even the potatoes are prob tossed in flour to crisp up. I dont know unless i look but too ill to look ha ha.

I told dh i wasnt up to much and he wasnt very forthcoming although he did say he would do the food shop. Ive sat on my bed wrapping everything today and dd2 has had a big sleep so i do feel marginally better. Got the school play this afternoon then try to cobble a dinner together for the kids. Hopefully i can get an early night if i can get dh to wrap dd2's stuff. Last night i left him making a bike on the kitchen table. Mucho swearing.

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 20/12/2012 16:05

Hmmm, good point about the potatoes etc. Could MIL not bring some 'safe' stuff with her?

DBro is gluten intolerant but not veggie so he either eats whatever and deals with the tummy ache or he just eats meat. It's the veggie bit that's going to make this hard I think. M&S are pretty good for putting things online, could you investigate from your sick bed and then send DH out with a specific list? It is his Mum after all

Tinkerisdead · 20/12/2012 20:51

Yes i'll research what i can buy. Mil is useless with food. She was jubilant that bisto best is gluten free but i just checked at its made on the same line as wheatflour products. Its a new diagnosis for her and im not sure she really gets it. She was chomping away on chips from a diner on holiday and i said the oil is bound to have cooked all the breaded products. But she said "but its chips?!" Or geabbing a jacket potato off the street but i know they usually dust grated cheese with flour to stop it sticking etc. she just sees cheese and potato.

Right. Lets see if i can cobble this dinner together then!

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 20/12/2012 21:29

Oh no! Proper gluten free gravy is absolutely vile :(

Tinkerisdead · 20/12/2012 23:09

Right i'm doing these:
but with a bit of sugar not canderel!
these for me!

Turkey n trimmings inc this i make it into balls with bacon round it

Xmas pudding or this

Shit. Better go shopping.

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 21/12/2012 10:22

Can you get gluten free breadcrumbs for the stuffing? The MIL can have some too.

You'll need gluten free bread/crackers for the pate anyway

Tinkerisdead · 21/12/2012 12:48

Yep im getting glutenfree bread and blitz it up for stuffing. And im doing gluten free yorkies (have to do yorkies as dh diesnt eat veg so bulk his plate up a bit).

It doesnt matter what trouble i go to i know, just know, they are gonna say "what, no mashed potato?"

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 21/12/2012 14:41

I've done gluten and egg free Yorkies before. Now there's a challenge! They were OK. Not as good as the gluten-y egg-y ones but not bad.

Tinkerisdead · 21/12/2012 18:34

Oh dont say that "a challenge?!!"

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 21/12/2012 18:42

I think it was the egg replacer that was the difficult bit. It was the wrong consistency so it all looked wrong. DBro can't have milk either so I'd replaced all 3 ingredients. If you're just swapping plain flour for GF flour, it should be a breeze

Tinkerisdead · 21/12/2012 19:49

Oh thank god. What a way to scare me!!

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 21/12/2012 19:59

I did say it was the egg and gluten Yorkies that were a challenge. You're just doing gluten right?

Tinkerisdead · 22/12/2012 08:10

Re-reads blathers post. Yes you did. Sorry mate, i'm in a heap ill still. Think ive got a chest infection now. My moans are falling on deaf ears. Dh came back from his mums with a box of cheese saying look what mum sent over ready for dinner!

I have sent him xmas food shopping. He moaned that he will get it wrong and i will tell him off for ruining xmas. I lost my rag and told him i feel that shit he can buy a fucking pizza for all i care! So he shot out the door at 7am!

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 22/12/2012 12:54

I hope his shopping is successful. Being ill at Christmas sucks Xmas Sad

Tinkerisdead · 22/12/2012 18:37

I feel much better!!!

Dh's shopping trip was a marvel not only did he get everything on the list. He got stuff i hadnt thought of like ready made formula so its easier when out visiting family and crumpets/pain au chocolat fir breakfasts. He also gave in to every whim that the supermarket tempted him with. If i'd have gone i would have panicked about money and stuck to the list but instead he's brought home loads of treats. It was a revelation!

If i feel as well tomorrow im cracking in with cooking. Do you think i can freeze stuffing if its g/f breadcrumbs, sage, onion and egg?

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 22/12/2012 19:31

I'm not sure about freezing egg. I'd suggest maybe blitzing your breadcrumbs with the sage and onion and freezing like that. All you have to do then in mix the egg into the breadcrumbs when you're ready. You might not even need to defrost them as breadcrumbs will thaw really quickly ime so it won't add much/anything to the cooking

Glad you're feeling better and good on DH for being a shopping angel

Tinkerisdead · 22/12/2012 19:44

Ive branched out from parties topic into AIBU
so aibu?

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 27/12/2012 10:55

How did you get on with your dog issues DW?

Tinkerisdead · 27/12/2012 16:28

Well i have broached it with them yet. Hopefully it'll be a while before i see them anyway. I keep getting all huffy thinking about it.

Poor little baba has a burst eardrum today. She was restless last night but certainly not distressed. Today she has crap out of her ear so got her in dr's and its burst Sad

Tinkerisdead · 27/12/2012 16:29

Havent broached it i meant

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 29/12/2012 10:40

I hope they take it well.

February's edition of Good Food magazine has just arrived and I'm all excited about Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year again :)

New Year to go first though. Is anyone doing anything exciting?

Tinkerisdead · 29/12/2012 14:55

Not me. We're all still ill.

But it was our anniversary on 27th and will be my burthday in jan so think we're a bit fed up of occasions!

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 29/12/2012 15:01

Oh No Sad

We're off to the Panto tomorrow and I think I might do a special dinner on Monday night for the New Year. I'll cook something nice, get the Vienetta out of the freezer for pud and maybe break out a few more crackers. That should do.

No more occasions here until DS's birthday in March so I'm feeling a little bereft

Tinkerisdead · 29/12/2012 15:45

Birthday!

lemonmuffin · 29/12/2012 16:52

What is everyone taking to New Years Eve parties?

We're going to a small party at friend's house, children included.

I was thinking decent champagne and a nice box of chocolates or maybe flowers for the hostess? Or is that a bit boringly predictable?
