Ear piercing of babies, what do you think?

Sometimes i think i live in a romany gypsy camp the number of babies i see with pierced ears and jewellery dangling from their little wrists. Having never adopted the courage to get my own ears pierced, i cant imagine piercing a little baby's ears. Its brutal and so common! What gives with this practice? In my opinion, its mutilation. The dangling bracelets are a health hazard to little ones, and i fear they could break their arms if they got them tangled in their sweaters.

What gives with this?

OK, so let's say for sake of argument that there are ignorant people who make immediate & casual assumptions based on others' appearance. They aren't the people whose opinion I'd want to allow to influence me, to be honest.

I still don't like ear-piercing on kids too young to have made up their own minds. But I find this sort of ranting much, much more unpleasant - mamaetc, you think that anyone who has their children's ears pierced is 'not well educated, financially compromised and socially incestuous'?

Why on earth are you so bothered, anyway?

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 23:31

Kama to be honest, i dont really want anything from you, i am just enjoying the debate. Unfortunately i think you are not!

took longer than I thought for this thread to head downhill.
whatever will be your next choice of thread mama?

fwiw, I don't think it tells anyone anything at all about the baby but surely it is not that controversial to say that some social groups in the UK are more likely to have their babies ears pierced than others - equally some cultural groups - and in other countries, that might not be the same.

I still think it shouldn't be legal though. Why not at age of personal consent?

child abuse is a very strong accusation to throw at a parent - it will mean anything and everything if we are not all careful what we apply it to.

Exactly we don't know you, which is why as far as i can see, no one on this thread has accused you of being anything, like you and others have accused us.
Reason for that is that we don't know you, so wouldn't be so bloody rude and asume sooooooo much.

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 23:33

Pruni, huge diff between calling a baby "ugly" and the rights or wrongs of piercing a babys ears. I have said plenty more which I am sure you can trawl through the archives for, which you could use to tar me with.

Like RSMML (is that the right combination of letters?), the majority of my (Asian) family have had their ears pierced at a very young age> I would probably not choose to do it to a daughter if I had one but I have no problem if others wish to do so. If it made people with opinions like mamadadawhatever stay away from my child then that would be an added bonus

This thread should of been titled 'Peircing babies ears is wrong ! If you agree please reply'

Cos thats all you want, is people who agree with you.

RTMTMML · 02/04/2005 23:36

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 23:38

Pruni, he he, share it if you like, i dont care. I have been accused of being like a 13 yr old for continuing an argument, one which basically cannot be argued against. Am i hurt? Nope. Dosent make a hill of beans to me. Obviously others are enjoying this too.

Nope not enjoying it at all, infact quite bored of it now, am off to bed now.

Thank the lord I am who I am, I may have my faults but never in this world would i be sooooooo offensive and judgemental about people i didn't know.

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 23:40

My husband is a statistician. If I knew all of your economic/cultural backgrounds (those of you who pierce) i could get him to do up a graph.

I am sure it would be very interesting to see.

But thats the point, you don't know you assume.

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 23:42

Well nutcracker, my opinions are based on people i do know. Night night, sleep tight and take out those earrings before u go to bed.

But fairly meaningless - because you'd be using a self-selected sample.
