My mother in law says he should wear a vest?

Dylan is 3 weeks old, and my mother in law advises that he should always wear a vest under his sleepsuits.

Is this just old-fashioned or sound advice?

I always put a vest/bodysuit on then sleepsuit on little babies

even my 20 month old does when its very chilly

IotasCat · 13/10/2008 19:34

lots of babies wear popper vests that do up between the legs if it's cold weather

2point4kids · 13/10/2008 19:34

I always do put a vest on under clothes unless its very hot weather (well Ds, not me!)

In bed he just has a sleepsuit though, no vest as he has a sleeping bag to sleep in and that would be too many layers.

I always put a vest on mine.

RhinestoneCowghoul · 13/10/2008 19:35

Yep, I always put vests on little babies too. DS (2.3yrs) has started wearing a vest again now weather is colder.

Littlies usually need a layer more than adults...

S1ur · 13/10/2008 19:36

Yes, I think you should probably do it, very small babies get colder easier.

It is old fashioned to an extent, in that our homes are a lot warmer than they were. However, unless you're house in very warm I'd still prob put the vest on.

bleurgh · 13/10/2008 19:36

You can be the judge of how warm he is and that's what it comes down to.

nickytwoooohtimes · 13/10/2008 19:36

Ds has always worn a bodysuit vest. They are great as they don't ride up. He won't come to any harm wihtout one though. This is just the start of helpful MIL advice, btw. Just wait till you are weaning/potty training, etc, etc!

DS (1 today!) has always worn a vest day and night. In really hot weather, he's worn just a vest but he's always got one on.
I did read somewhere that for small babies you should add an extra layer to what you are wearing so if you're wearing a t-shirt, baby should wear vest and t-shirt etc. I kind of went by that and DS always seemed comfortable.

nixrolz · 13/10/2008 19:40

Thank you all - very helpful.

I always put vests on my babies unless very hot summer weather.

BlueberryPancake · 13/10/2008 20:09

I have found that a vest keeps the nappy in place a bit better and might avoid some messy clothes. I always put a vest on my two, even now DS1 is three and he wears old-fashion little vest top under his tshirts.

ChairmumMiaow · 13/10/2008 20:15

I always put a vest on DS because it avoids a naked (and probably cold) tummy when he's moving around - and when being picked up when he was little.

When its hot he often wears a vest with trousers/shorts instead of a tshirt

anyfucker · 13/10/2008 20:16

agree with pancake

a vest keeps the nappy nice and snug

ceebee74 · 13/10/2008 20:17

My DS has always worn a vest during the autumn/winter months - now he is 2.3, this winter he is wearing proper vests but before that, he had the ones that had poppers between the legs. However, he doesn't wear one in bed - just his PJ's.

I echo what Hensmum said - I think the general advice is to give the baby one extra layer than you have on and a vest is an easy way of doing that (unless you also wear a vest )

Mercy · 13/10/2008 20:18

Oh I miss those little vests!

Your mil is right I'm afraid.

bozza · 13/10/2008 20:21

It depends if he is warm enough or not. simple as. Both my two are quite warm blooded. And it is quite mild atm. They did used to wear a bodysuit during the day in winter when they were babies but not at night under the sleepsuit unless it was very cold indeed.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 13/10/2008 20:22

DS2 still wears one every day and he is 2 years old.

dinny · 13/10/2008 20:24

my dd and ds wear vests except in summer and they are 6 and 4!

Mercy · 13/10/2008 20:29

Bodysuits, that's the term that escaped me!

A 3 week old should def wear a bodysuit at this time of year

sadbarratthomeowner · 13/10/2008 20:30

My ex-MIl was always full of 'helpful' advice too! However, on this occasion, I agree with her!

nooka · 13/10/2008 20:30

It depends on what else he is wearing, the weather, the heating etc. Vests are useful things, but not compulsory If you are concerned, but your hand against his skin under his sleepsuit and check it's nice and warm. Overheating is generally considered more of a concern than getting cold in a small baby.

DaisyGee · 13/10/2008 20:34

I've had summer and winter babies and was advised that (indoors)a small baby needs one more layer of clothing than an adult during Autumn/Winter months - this is usually the vest.

Hulababy · 13/10/2008 20:34

Make your own decision; he is your baby.

My DD was always a hot baby, and still is now at 6y. She rarely had a vest, and never at ight. She was perfectly warm enough with a sleep suit and sleeping bag.

A baby is better being a little cool than too hot. Too hot is far more dangerous to a tiny baby.
