My mother in law says he should wear a vest?

Dylan is 3 weeks old, and my mother in law advises that he should always wear a vest under his sleepsuits.

Is this just old-fashioned or sound advice?

the table at the bottom of this link is very useful for deciding how many layers they should be wearing at night - when in a grobag - but gives you an idea. if you are using sheets and blankets then most baby books have a guide as well, or failing that on the back of a bedding bale pack in mothercare.

so prob a vest BUT depends entirely on what else he is wearing.

as nooka said!

sm with hulababy - dd is warm litlte one so rarely has more than babygro/vest plus maybe a cardigan thing on inside... most houses these days are quite warm so would second her point that much easier to get em too hot than too cold

My ds ALWAYS has a body suit on under his clothes but I must admit my friend's don't put them on their babies unless it's cold.

Yes, a vest (bodysuit with poppers) is a good idea for little ones. Their ENT system is very immature and it is best to keep their chests warm. Bodysuits also keep nappies in place AND limit the damage when they have a massive liquid poo.

bellavita · 14/10/2008 08:46

Mine always wore the popper vests under clothes.

littleducks · 14/10/2008 08:54

he doesn't need a vest if you arrange the correct number of layers in his outerclothes but it can be an easier way of adding another layer, although when very small i did find a jumper/sweater vest thing easier when the weather was changeable as it was easier to take on and off if it warmed up than a vest if the baby was wearing a sleepsuit which i wouldnt be taking off

wotulookinat · 14/10/2008 09:04

My DS is nearly 2 and still wears a popper vest most days, and when it is cold at night.

mamadiva · 14/10/2008 09:09

My 2.5YO still wears a popper vest. I wouldn't say it's a must so don't worry about it too much but it does help if it's really cold.

Have you ever used vests on baby?

bozza · 14/10/2008 09:15

Mine both stopped wearing poppers by the time they were two because of potty training. And I really think they would both be too warm with a vest on in bed with the weather as it is.

EEC · 14/10/2008 12:44

mine always wears vests unless it's very hot - in bed too - but then we live in a big draughty house.

louii · 14/10/2008 12:46

God yes, bloody nappy would always be falling off otherwise.

anyfucker · 14/10/2008 14:46

with my two, I felt really sad the day they gave up their popper vests

I love those little things, really remind me of those baby days IYKWIM

chloemegjess · 14/10/2008 15:03

Yes I would put the vest on as it is quite cold at the moment. Unless he feels too hot to you, in which case take it off as too many layers can be dangerous. My DD is 9 months and has one everyday at the mo and probably will till the summer now
