Keep DD off nursery before holiday in case of picking up bug - WWYD?

We go on holiday on Thursday, do I keep my DD off tomorrow and Wednesday?
I am off on Wednesday but wanted the day to do errands. DH thinks he’ll be able to work tomorrow and look after 1.5 year old but I’m telling him he won’t be able to. He wants to keep DD off both days in case she picks up a bug. Has he got a point??

What about the bugs that have more than a two day incubation period that she’ll already have picked up, and is currently brewing nicely?

I wouldn’t, apart from food poisoning (which you’re more likely to get on holiday), lots of things have a longer incubation period than that, so she would already have been exposed. Also I’d definitely want as much childfree time as possible before a holiday!

Unless nursery have active D&V or similar, I wouldn’t give it a second thought

If she has an adult who is available to look after her properly, fine. It's not school, it's not mandatory.
But DH should be taking the day off if he wants to do this because he cannot work and look after her (and it's probably against the rules at his work).

Send her to nursery and have the time to get ready for holiday, clean the house for your return and tidy up loose ends at work. Keeping her off nursery is madness.

I used to do stuff like that. Before my wedding, before christmas, before holidays etc I'd avoid baby groups, softplays and similar as kids from all over the place go there and DS would catch something every time. However, I don't tend to class nursery in the same category, those germs are ones they're exposed to daily anyway so I felt like they're less likely to catch something new anyway.

I'd base it on what actually happens at nursery though, does your DD catch constant illnesses or is it few and far between?

Yes, just for very special events are likely to be ruined by having a poorly child on the day.

Sickness bug on my wedding day? Absolutely not. Christmas ruined by a virus that lands child in A&E? Nope. I felt it was worth extending the holiday by a little to avoid it.

I have friends and family who've basically had christmas cancelled by kids being ill and had to choose whether to even go on holiday when kids have come down with an illness. I'd just rather avoid it where possible.

I really don't see the sense in this. It takes a while for viruses to incubate and transmit, not that this will even happen, so those couple of days could simply be internal development stage.

Something we of previous generations haven't ever thought about. Go to work, prepare for holiday, the first day of being off is going on holiday.

When my children were younger I was like this.. everyone that disagrees is entitled to their opinion but like a previous poster, if it’s a special occasion like a wedding, holiday or Christmas and nursery isn’t mandatory like school ; I kept them off lol

I am quite glad schools break up a bit before Christmas to let any illness run its course, and plan holidays in the middle of summer holidays to allow for recovery from whatever either side.

Not barmy. There’s just loads of viruses and an increasing threshold (compared to other countries) of contagious ailments children are allowed to attend with.

Incubation for many bugs are 10 days or so. Are you keeping the little ones home for 10 days pre departure, or even longer so they over anything that does crop up ?

The main things my son caught from nursery are colds and they seem to appear within a day or 2.

It's just about reducing the likelihood of disruption. Another reason is elderly family and wanting to see grandparents over Christmas. They'll have nothing to do with us if we're ill. Perhaps your family aren't like that but mine are.

I'm the same kind of person who washes their kids hands before they eat at softplay. I'm sure plenty don't but I like to avoid illness!

What if you all pick up a bug on the plane

I know most people on here are disagreeing, but I am actually doing the same thing. My child only goes to nursery 1 day a week though and I have booked an extra day that week so she doesnt need to go. Its worth my peace of mind ive done everything i could to enjoy a week without sleepless nights and snotty noses/sickness.. the beginning of September is always the worst for various illness and im doing everything i can to have an enjoyable only week away this year!
