My son is off to uni this year. Which would people recommend an iron or a steamer?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
PermanentTemporary · 13/06/2026 11:58

I never considered providing either tbh. Is he going into halls?

Noorandapples · 13/06/2026 11:59

Ask him which he'd prefer and expect him to never actually use it

Decacaffeinatednow · 13/06/2026 11:59

Which is he most familiar with?

Yes he is. I know they provide ironing board but just wondered what was best

Neither.

They were provided in son’s first year halls flats

The ironing board was never unwrapped and there were 6 people in his flat.

He said other flats were the same, except one that had used it as a temporary bar.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/06/2026 12:03

You pick. It won’t matter because he won’t use it!

Beamur · 13/06/2026 12:03

Neither 😄
Check the accomodation - many will provide these items.

Dearover · 13/06/2026 12:06

DD went to a university with regular formals and a strict dress code for exams & matriculation. I don't believe she has ever used an iron. Technically she has a steamer now she works. I don't think it's been used either.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 13/06/2026 12:06

He won't need either!

swapsicles · 13/06/2026 12:06

Does he actually iron his clothes himself willingly? If not save your money, he won't use it.

SilverPink · 13/06/2026 12:08

Wait, students actually iron?!!

Darragon · 13/06/2026 12:09

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

LycheeFizz1972 · 13/06/2026 12:10

Teach him to give his clothes a brisk shake and hang them carefully on hangers when still wet. He will not use an iron.

OneThreadOnlybyN · 13/06/2026 12:14

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

either will be a waste of money.

Gillybo54 · 13/06/2026 12:17

Thanks everyone. If he was like me I always took my washing and ironing home but just wanted to see what others thought
Appreciate all the comments as going to save me money by buying neither lol😀

OP posts:
LaliqueSaltGrinder · 13/06/2026 12:18

Neither. He probably won't be allowed to use it in his room, laiundry rooms typically have irons, and he is very unlikely to iron anything anyway. Total waste of money.

AgnesX · 13/06/2026 12:22

If he's the type of student who's the exception to the rule and irons (there are exceptions, I've met them) but just get him an own brand iron. John Lewis do one at £20 which has a good reputation.

LookInsideMySpottyBag · 13/06/2026 12:27

Neither.
I’m in my 30’s and I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve used an iron in my entire life. He certainly won’t at uni I would imagine in my experience (unless he already is fussed about ironing his own things already i suppose)

KilkennyCats · 13/06/2026 12:28

SilverPink · 13/06/2026 12:08

Wait, students actually iron?!!

Of course they don't 😂

HermioneGrangersHair · 13/06/2026 12:33

Neither.
DC x 2 uni courses I have neither provided iron or steamer, they both survived! I do remember an ironing board in one flat which was never used.

My DC22 never irons, and to be honest nor do I if I can help it.

KatieKat88 · 13/06/2026 12:33

I'm 38 and the last time I used an iron was for those iron on name labels for DD's school clothes. I have since seen sense and bought the ones that are just self-adhesive. I think the iron is in the garage somewhere?

Funkylights · 13/06/2026 12:33

Does anyone iron these days? I haven’t for years and we are a family of 4 with teens

Blahblahblahhhhhs · 13/06/2026 12:34

Iron.

it will make a handy doorstop when he wants to prop his room door open 🤪

sorry op I don’t think this is a wise use of money 😁

Lexy2345 · 13/06/2026 12:35

Get him a bottle of Crease Release instead

whatsit84 · 13/06/2026 12:37

God I ironed as a student and still do now. When people say they don’t iron I feel I am missing some
kind of magical trick as I’d look like a bag lady if I didn’t iron my clothes
