I'm curious to know when is "normal" to move on to the next stage with each of these things. Comments from mum friends have made me think maybe we're dragging certain things out for too long but I'm also kind of thinking if it aint broke, don't fix it.

So, how old was your toddler when they;

  1. stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides)
  2. stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime
  3. stopped using a high chair for meals
  4. potty trained

I definitely agree on if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  1. Neither of my children (DS is 4.5 yr old and DD 2yr 10 months old) ever climbed out of their cot so we were in no rush to take the side off. Took the side off DS cot at 3 and DD is still in hers.
  2. DS stopped having a bottle about 18 months, DD never had a bottle. Both have a cup of milk in the morning.
  3. Both stopped using high chairs about 2.5.
  4. DD isn't potty trained yet but we're going to try soon, DS was potty trained at 3.5.

I'm a very firm believer in the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mindset, and don't care much what other people think of my own personal parenting decisions, so don't be swayed by other people's comments - always parent in the way you feel is right for you and your family, it will always be different to someone else, so comparisons are difficult (and also fraught with weird competition/judgement), so you have to just do what you think is best.

It therefore also doesn't really matter when other people reached these 'milestones' either, but given you've asked....

  1. DD was 3 and a half - she never tried to get out, or expressed a preference to get out, and slept beautifully in her cot so we never pushed this issue. At around 3.5 she asked if she could try a 'proper bed', so we just took her bars off (she didn't know her cot bed actually turned into a toddler bed, so we were able to do it that same day). It was simple and painless.

  2. both my kids are still breastfed first thing and before bed (just before teeth brushing). DD is 3 and 10 months and DS is 18 months.

  3. I have tripp trapp for both mine so they're technically in the same seat but it's just adapted with them. DS is still in the 'high chair' version, as in, he can't escape out of it himself. I think DD was around 2 and a half when she had just the normal seat, but I don't ever remember making a note of the date when we made the change

  4. DD was 2 and 5 months. DS still has a way to go in nappies yet
