How old was your toddler when...

I'm curious to know when is "normal" to move on to the next stage with each of these things. Comments from mum friends have made me think maybe we're dragging certain things out for too long but I'm also kind of thinking if it aint broke, don't fix it.

So, how old was your toddler when they;

  1. stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides)
  2. stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime
  3. stopped using a high chair for meals
  4. potty trained

  1. 3 years 1 month
  2. stopped breastfeeding around 15 months. We later had to start giving him a cup of cow's milk first thing which he still has aged 3.5 as he was waking up ravenous and grumpy.
  3. 2 years 5 months. To be honest could have done this earlier, we just remembered about it as he started playing up at mealtimes. It's a tripp trapp so he's still a bit higher with the footrest.
  4. 2 years 7 months, could have gone earlier but this coincided with 2 weeks off work and nursery.

  1. About 3, moved into toddler beds for a further year or so
  2. Probably 2/2.5 (but had milk in a cup before bed for years, sometimes they still do at 10 & 6! DD also has a glass of milk at breakfast.)
  3. 3ish then into a booster seat
  4. DD was nearly 3 but got it immediately, DS was 3y3m and it took FOREVER because he hated it and resisted at every opportunity!
Fontainebleau007 · 27/01/2025 13:43

2 years
1 year
1 year - changed to boost seat for table
2 years 9 months

Tisthedamnseason · 27/01/2025 13:51

1 - just under two for both DC
2 - DD1 never had a bottle, DD2 we stopped a bottle after she turned 1.
3 - somewhere between 18 months - 2yrs for both DC maybe
4 - 2.5 for DD1, DD2 is just over 2.5 and being a bit more troublesome about it but hopefully soon!!

Wrongsideofpennines · 27/01/2025 13:58
  1. 2 years 11 months.
  2. Breastfed until 22 months. My 2nd is still feeding at 20 months.
  3. Moved to a booster at just turned 2 then no booster from about 2.5.
  4. 2.5. Poo had been in the loo for a good 6 months+ and probably could have done it earlier but I had a newborn and wasn't in the right place to do it before.

Probably considered late for lots of these but none of these are particularly milestones that are tracked and mean anything.

Stressedoutforever · 27/01/2025 14:00

Dc1

  1. Just over 2
  2. Just over 2
  3. Just over 2
  4. 2.5

Dc2

  1. Planning to do this afternoon at 20 months
  2. 12 months when we cut off dc1
  3. Around 15 months when we moved house and I didn't want to take the highchair
  4. Not yet but uses occasionally, will wait until ready like dc1
Brooomhilda · 27/01/2025 14:00
  1. 2 years and 8 months.
  2. about 2, I think. Maybe slightly later.
  3. About 15 months. She moved to a toddler table with toddler chairs next to our table.
  4. 2 years, 11 months.
Isthisexpected · 27/01/2025 14:03

So, how old was your toddler when they;

stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides) - 2.5 then turned into a cotbed and then co-slept with next one from 8 months.
stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime- bf until 3 but tended to only ask for milk overnight when poorly from 2 ish. Always had a feed before bed though even if not every night towards the end.
stopped using a high chair for meals - 3 and 3
potty trained - almost 4 and 3. Very late compared to some friends but absolutely stress free and no accidents apart from occasional overnight.

You do you.

Seawolves · 27/01/2025 14:15
  1. stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides) - Still sleeps in a bed with high sides
  2. stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime - Never had a bottle, always been tube fed
  3. stopped using a high chair for meals - never used one, can't sit independently
  4. potty trained - I don't know if that will ever happen
ForeverTired89 · 27/01/2025 14:19
  1. Just before DD was 3. She never climbed out until then.
  2. Stopped the bottle at 2 and switched to a straw cup. She still has milk morning and night and she’s nearly 5. She loves milk!
  3. Around 2. She used to constantly climb out so just bought her a little toddler table and chair.
  4. 3 years 4 months. Resisted for the longest time - in the end, she started doing it on her own.
Dal8257 · 27/01/2025 14:23

1 - Would never sleep in a cot. Switched to a toddler bed at around 1yo.
2 - Bf until almost 3 so would likely have some milk at bedtime and morning.
3 - Always used the Tripp Trapp at the table. Took the baby setting off at around 15 months as they hated being trapped in there.
4 - About 2.5.

tarheelbaby · 27/01/2025 14:36
  1. DD1 around 2yrs old? Well before she turned 3 since we needed the cot for DD2.
DD2 moved into her big bed about 2yrs old? She slept in a travel cot until she was 18mos. At that point I made DH set up her real cot and she slept in that for at least another 6mos, maybe more? at the end, we had permanently lowered the side so she could come and go at will.
  1. DD1 started using a sippy cup from 9 mos? but continued to use bottles too, esp for formula. She stopped b/f at 1 year and stopped bedtime bottles soon afterwards.
  2. DD1 stopped using the high chair shortly before 3yrs old. Until then she had nowhere else to sit/eat. For her 3rd b-day we bought a small table and chairs from Ikea.
DD2 moved to the little table aged 18mos or 2 years to join DD1 and her friends.
  1. DD1 was out of nappies by 2.75 years to start play group. We had a false start and went back to nappies. Then one day she said she wanted to wear pants. We had a few incidents on the first day or two until she got the hang of it and she was daytime dry by the end of the week. She wore pull-ups at night until the end of reception at least - it is a long trek to the nearest loo from her room - but they were mostly dry.
DD2 was out of nappies by 2.75 years but I have no memory of it all. She also wore pull-ups at night for a long time b/c it's a long trek to the loo from her room too.

  1. stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides)
We co-slept from the start, but had a co-sleeper attachment and bed guards on the big bed for about 18 months. Probably longer than necessary.
  1. stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime
Never drank a bottle as exclusively breastfed. Night feed was the last to drop, at about two years, 10 months.
  1. stopped using a high chair for meals
We stopped using the highchair at around 2.5 years.
  1. potty trained
Daytime, at about 2 years, four months. We did it over a long weekend and it worked pretty well. Stopped night-time nappies at about three years old as they were almost always dry in the morning by that point anyway.
Beentherelivedthat · 27/01/2025 15:07
  1. Probably about 2.5/3, wasn't in a rush to risk her getting out of bed in the middle of the night (she has only done so once since)
  2. Still has milk morning and night at nearly 4 but in a 360 cup instead
  3. Around 2.5 I think, I kept it longer than needed for early morning breakfast in front of Peppa (had a very early riser at the time and I refuse to sit anywhere but the sofa pre-6am 😂)
  4. From 2.5 she was using potty for wees and immediately dry overnight, would not poo anywhere but a nappy until 3 so had to put a pull-up on every time

I'd say don't feel pressured to rush anything unless it's really getting ridiculous or interfering with your life / school readiness. It says a lot that I can't truly remember the exact age of these stages even though they were so recent. Once they've happened they no longer occupy your mind at all and it all feels quite irrelevant who did what first!

Superscientist · 27/01/2025 15:08
  1. 2 years although never really slept in it
  2. 4.5 still has a drink of oat milk before bed but now a cup not a bottle. Switched to oat milk from formula at 2
  3. 4.5 years and still uses the high chair but she's small and can't reach the table otherwise. She's used the table and not the tray since 2.5-3
  4. Introduced potty training/ nappy free time at 2y7m, committed to potty training at 2y9m
Pieeatery · 27/01/2025 15:12

Potty train about 3 and half. Dc2 couod go on potty from about 12 m old but would aoso have accidents. Issues with lack of toilets when out for the day using buses...
And dc1 was very tricky generally so if angry would wee on the carpet etc.

MarioLink · 27/01/2025 15:13
  1. 3 years old, DD1 never tried to climb out, DD2 did it once but never again
  2. My two never had bottles. Breastfed morning till age 2 and evening till 3.5 and 2.5. I thought bottles can be phased out for sippy cups from 6 months and gone from 1 year but I don't know how realistic that is. Milk is good for them into the toddler years and beyond.
  3. 4 years, mine aren't tall! Ikea Antilop. Switched to a high up normal chair.
  1. DD1 2.4 years, took several weeks
DD2 2.2 years, took a few days

I aimed for the summer after DD1 turned 2 and the summer after DD1 turned 18 months as I think ealier is easier but with the time of year their birthdays are it turned out around the same age.

dairydebris · 27/01/2025 15:13

All of mine-

  1. had double mattresses on floors so we could sleep with them where needed. Went into raised doubles around 5ish.

  2. bfed til about 3 so never had a night time or morning bottle. All loved drinking cows milk from 1, but not from a bottle or at night.

  3. 4 or 5? When they could reach table from normal chair I think

  4. potty trained during day between 18m and 3y. I still have a 7 year old in diapers at night 😬.

butterdish93 · 27/01/2025 15:14

stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides)
2) stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime
3) stopped using a high chair for meals
4) potty trained

Dd1 stopped sleeping in cot when she turned 2
Ds2 is 2.5 and is still in a cot.

Neither of them ever had bottles regularly

DD1 stopped high chair at around 2.5
Ds2 around 15 months

Both potty trained at just over 2 years.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 27/01/2025 15:18
  1. 2 years and 4 months. Could have done it sooner or got away with it longer. Moved directly from cot to double bed.
  1. Still breastfed at 4 years 5 months and has it morning and evening.
  1. We have a tripp trapp and we took the tray off at about 13/14 months high chair bit was later at about 18 months. Still using it as a chair at the table.
  1. DD was late at 3 years 1 month. Day and night. We tried before but had some issues and she got distressed with it. She was very ready though and it was done in 2 days.
Yourethebeerthief · 27/01/2025 15:24
  1. stopped sleeping in a cot (with high sides)

3 years old

  1. stopped having a bottle of milk in the morning/bedtime

Breastfed until 2 years old. Went a few months just down to one small feed before bed and then naturally transitioned to a sippy cup of milk while having bedtime stories. Still sometimes does at 3 before a final toilet trip and teeth brushed.

  1. stopped using a high chair for meals

Still used them sometimes in cafes or restaurants for convenience at just over 2 years old if there weren't enough chairs for adults. By 2 and a half years they were never used. At home it was gone before 2 years old and we switched from a basic ikea one to the Tripp Trapp chair.

  1. potty trained

3 years old.
