2 year old boy in leggings? Is this ok?

Is there a age where my son should stop wearing leggings? He wears them most days with a hoodie or oversized tee.

I saw another mum on TikTok discuss it and it made me think/question when and if he should stop wearing them?

I just find them so comfy and practical for him haha plus I'm always in leggings myself and much more comfy than a pair of jeans

Because men get to the age where you see a very pronounced ball sack when wearing leggings. I have a friend who wears them as an adult and I really wish he wouldn't.

I dint know… that’s what men wear to go walking or running isn’t it?
At least that’s what my dh and 2 adults dcs wear.
And you dint see their testicles nor penis.

Our 2 year old ds practically lives in leggings with slightly oversized tops/sweatshirts/hoodies. He is a dinky dot with skinny legs so joggers swamp him a bit no matter the size, so leggings look much better on him. I think it’s a really cute toddler/pre-schooler look!
I don’t personally love the look with tighter/shorter tops, I think it looks better slightly longer and baggier tops/sweatshirts. But even so they’re only little so if you want to do it I’m sure they still look cute.

we did the same with ds1 who wore them until about 3/4.

Seems fine and in my mind it would be fine at any age so long as he was happy.

Plenty of grown men wear leggings - albeit mostly for sports.

My 6yo son wears leggings all the time. No one's ever said anything or found it odd.

Modranihtandtomtens · 05/11/2024 13:18

Just bought some new thermal leggings from the 'boys' section which have leopards on them, and they went up to size 9/10 (we're a few years off that). If the kid likes them, and the shop sells them imma say it's okay :D Leggings often have brighter colours and patterns than joggers, in my experience.

Raberta · 05/11/2024 13:21

I think as a fashion choice it's fine. When in nappies there is no issue practically either. When in pants I think it can look inappropriate, possibly depending on what kind of pants they wear? The pants my toddler has leave nothing to the imagination so he had to ditch the leggings as soon as he was out of nappies.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/11/2024 13:24

My DNephews (one is now 11 months and the other is 6) have both worn leggings for ages until joggers or jeans or other trousers could be worn. Leggings are generally comfy and wear well.

You’re right the joggers I’ve seen and bought for older DNephew are definitely more sporty or in seemingly harder wearing fabrics like older boys would wear.

2 years is absolutely fine, I assume you are still choosing the clothes? Presumably there is a nappy there too.

It's only inappropriate when it would constitute flashing, which will be a long time yet. I'm sure he'll have clothing preferences before long.

FFS. How the fuck would wearing leggings constitute flashing.
Only on MN.
😉😁😁.

My 7 year old nephew wears Fred and noah leggings, they look lovely. And there is certainly no flashing 🤦‍♀️ let kids be kids for goodness sake

Anni23 · 05/11/2024 14:14

This threads got a little weird, my 2.5 year old wearing leggings without nappies and underwear on isn’t inappropriate in any way! They’re not see through and he’s not flashing and nothing is bulging!! What weird things to say about toddlers clothing!

Skybluepinky · 05/11/2024 14:23

It something I’d put a boy in as mine were outdoorsy and they just rnt suitable. I’ve also over heard mummy mafia making snide comments, Put in joggers or jeans for preschool.

Montylooloo · 05/11/2024 14:40

I put my 3 year old in leggings all the time. I love the look with oversized tops/jumpers. I don’t mind wide leg cords or the cotton turned up wide leg jersery trousers etc but don’t like joggers (look scruffy) and hate to see children in jeans of any gender before about 8 as they are just uncomfortable!

Wouldthislooksuspicious · 05/11/2024 14:42

My 7 year old Ds wears them !!! They are comfy

Soontobe60 · 05/11/2024 15:03

Leggings are fab! But can I make a suggestion? I teach in a school nursery and we take children from their 3rd birthday - theyre generally toilet trained. However, lots of children struggle with going to the toilet if they’re wearing tight leggings / track suit bottoms / pants. Please make sure their lower garments are loose enough for them to pull them down quickly when they’re rushing to go for a wee!!

MidnightPatrol · 05/11/2024 15:04

What was the TikTok saying was wrong with leggings?!

Boymamaoftwo · 05/11/2024 15:40

@BigDeepBreaths @sexnotgenders coming for someone's parenting over mumsnet. Simply cause I asked a question to get others opinions. Haha tragic

Have faith in yourself and your decisions OP. If you are happy with the leggings and your DS is happy with them, and they are clean(ish) and comfortable and suitable for his lifestyle then go for it. You'll face opinions about everything over his lifetime so be confident in your own parenting.

My DS wore leggings until he was about 6 and then decided he preferred joggers. He is now 8 and chooses his clothes from wherever he likes, the boys, girls or unisex sections. He likes bright colours and being comfortable.

If you're looking for some fun character ones that are cosy and stretchy, look on Roy's Boys. My 3 yo adores her bluey and duggee ones.

They are so comfortable and they can move freely. There is no age restriction. I wouldn’t worry about it!

WingingItMam48 · 05/11/2024 16:12

People on tik tom and Instagram are always "experts" trying to tell you what to do or what to eat. They're usually no more expert than the average person on the street, take no notice. As long as your child is warm enough, they'll be fine in leggings. Learn to have confidence in your own parenting choices, I'm sure you're doing fine.

doobeedoodledoo · 05/11/2024 16:18

How bizarre.

My 3 and a half year old only wears leggings. I find joggers too bulky on his frame.

In winter he wears leggings from Lindex with the brushed cotton lining. Lovely and cosy. Then waterproof trousers/puddlesuit if really wet.

BigDeepBreaths · 05/11/2024 13:00

YABU to doubt your own parenting decisions based on something you have seen posted by a stranger on TikTok.

Yes, you’re waaaayy too concerned about what some TikTok random deems appropriate wear for a young child. What’s supposed to be the big issue with them?

LyingPaintSample · 05/11/2024 16:56

Mine still loves to wear them and he's in y4. He often puts shorts over the top. They wash and dry easier than joggers and he doesn't get overheated in them, they work well!

SnapdragonToadflax · 05/11/2024 16:59

My six year old wears leggings - he finds them comfy and they're quite thick, usually from Lindex. I put him in longer tops with them.

I'm aware he'll probably realise it's 'uncool' soon, but for now they're what he chooses because they're comfy.
