If your DC had their ears pierced under the age of 2...

How was it?

DC is 18 months and for about 9 months now she loves earrings etc. I feel like she is too young to have her ears pierced and won't understand and might tug on them. I wasn't planning on getting her ears pierced until she was about 5 really. But my mum said my sister and I had our ears pierced around the age of 2. SIL also had her ears pierced as a baby.

No benefit to circumcision? Cleanliness, preventing sexually transmitted infections and one study showed a 4 fold risk of uncircumcised men and cervical cancer - not to mention the aesthetics

Aesthetics of a penis? That’s not a benefit.

and actually the whole ‘prevents STDs’ isn’t proven. There’s lots of conflicting studies.

Why is every piece of graffiti including a penis is of a circumcised one?

They don’t ‘all’. My niece is Spanish, hers weren’t pierced at birth because her mum said no.
Cultural norms should be challenged when they have the potential to cause harm and have no benefit.

This.

Cause it’s easier to draw

Graffiti penises? This thread has taken a weird twist!

Completely agree that we shouldn't be modifying the bodies of kids who are unable to consent. Whether that is ears or penises!

I find it ridiculous that people still think this is OK in our supposedly enlightened age!

BurbageBrook · 06/10/2024 11:59

Oh OP please don't be ridiculous. She probably also wants to touch hot plates and run into traffic. She's a baby, practically. Don't put her through a painful and unnecessary procedure.

I also had my daughter’s ears done as a baby , she was fine didn’t cry and took good care afterwards

Why did you have it done to her when she was a baby?

Mum1422 · 06/10/2024 18:18

Because I wanted to, I had mine done as a baby aswell including most of my family and my child’s father’s side. Also she’s my child so my decision

Parker231 · 06/10/2024 18:36

Does no one’s school not have a no piercing policy. At DC’s it was no piercing - not even small earring studs- during the school day or at any sports lessons or matches.

Ours are allowed them at school but they have to be taken out for all sports so it’s more aggro than it’s worth to have them pierced.

She’s a person, so it should be her decision.

You wanted to make holes in your child's body, why?

She must have thought it would make her look nicer!

Irie1980 · 06/10/2024 18:44

You can get little earring stickers for kids and they'd be perfect for a 2 year old.

I'd never pierce a kids ears when they're too young to properly consent.

She starting liking “earrings etc” at 9 months old?! Sorry… what? She doesn’t understand them enough to like them. She doesn’t want her ears to be pierced because she “likes earrings”. She doesn’t need her ears to be pierced full stop. Just buy some stick on ones if you must and wait until she is older. 5 is still too young. My 5 year old loves stick on earrings and kids jewellery but has never asked about having her ears pierced.

This. Why would you inflict pain, and potentially infection, on a baby? It looks fucking awful as well.

Always the way with these people! They can’t articulate exactly why they made such a decision (because there is no logic to it!) so they always go for that one.

How far do you think the “because we have always done it that way” argument should go though? Do you not think at some point there is a place to step back and think “why do we always do it this way?”

does your child not get a say in her own body?

Quite. The "hun" part was a bonus 😉.
Maybe we should still be hitting children with rulers because it was always done in previous generations.

I’m a big fan of throwing in the odd sarcastic ‘hun’ Grin
