What time does your 3-4 year old go to bed and wake up?

DS is 4 in November and in the last few months his is falling asleep later and later, now typically around 9.15pm.

Routine has always been the same since he was 6 months old.

If we start bedtime earlier for "buffer faff time" he will still fall asleep around the same time, so we just end up spending longer doing bed time routines.

He has dropped all naps when he turned 2.
He will wake up anywhere between 6-8 am so sleeps around 10 hours on average.

Even on days that he wakes up at 6 and I think we'll get an early bedtime, he proves me wrong ha.

We eat healthy and are active. DS spends time in nursery and when not we do all sorts like trampoline parks, playgrounds, swimming, dog walks etc.

Am I missing something? Is this just his natural routine? Or is this the norm for kids his age?
I keep seeing posts about lids who go to sleep obediently at 7pm which is so far from my experience.

My DD is 4y8m, and would be in bed dead asleep at 6pm a year ago! Would sleep solidly through to 7 or 7:30am

Currently she's on 7pm-6am, so 11 hours or so.

She seems to get tired more than other kids. The neighbours buy who is the same age, goes to bed at 9:30/10pm and is up around 7.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/08/2024 22:04

My almost 3yr old isnt sleeping until 9pm and wakes around 7am.
He is occasionally napping at nursery but not every day. He really needs to drop his nap!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/08/2024 22:04

5yr old sleeps 7.30-7 pretty much!

My son is 4 1/2yrs old. Dropped naps at 2 1/2 and sleeps 7pm-7am sometimes longer sometimes wakes slightly earlier.

mynameiscalypso · 23/08/2024 22:06

My niece is 4 in November and she goes to bed c7pm and wakes early (often before 6). Going to bed later doesn't help at all.

My DS is 5 now but has been 7.30 - 7.30 (give or take) since he was about 2.

ForeverTired89 · 23/08/2024 22:06

My DD was 4 in May and goes to bed between 7:30 and 8, wakes up anywhere between 7am and 8am. Her cousin who is 6 weeks older than her goes to bed around the same time but wakes up at 6am no matter what.

moorin · 23/08/2024 22:08

My 4 year old falls asleep around 830, and normally wakes up between 6-7.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/08/2024 22:08

Been hosting our just 4 year old grandson this week.
He is in bed at 7, usually asleep within 15 mins and wakes between 6 and 7 next morning. Mum makes sure he is very active outdoor and mentally fully occupied indoors and he eats well.

My oldest daughter was exactly the same. She's 6 now and will still be asleep by 7.30 most nights and wakes about 7am

My 4yr old son on the other hand is still awake at 8.30/9.00 every night and up at 6

LadySailorr · 23/08/2024 22:11

DS is 3.5, and he goes to bed between 9 and 9.30pm. He wakes up at around 8.30 in the morning.

We often get comments about his bed time but he’s always slept better when it’s a later bed time, and I hate the idea that we pick him up from nursery at 6pm, and have him in bed not long after we get home.

PoshVanillaWithBlackSpecks · 23/08/2024 22:12

DD just turned 4 goes to sleep around 9pm and wakes around 7am.

I'm hugely envious of the 7-7 parents but sadly I think some children just need less sleep and mine is one of them 😭

NuffSaidSam · 23/08/2024 22:13

3.5 year old.

Still naps a few times a week.

On a nap day, will go to bed at 7:30pm,. definitely asleep by 8pm.

On a non-nap day is falling asleep at 5pm and will be definitely asleep in bed by 7pm.

Wakes between 5:30 and 6am, no matter what time she's gone to bed or whether she's had a nap. She only sleeps in if she's jetlagged or ill.

PoshVanillaWithBlackSpecks · 23/08/2024 22:15

(and yes, she gets lots of exercise and eats well. Whatever time she goes to sleep she just seems to wake up 10 hours later 🤷🏼‍♀️)

Ratfinkstinkypink · 23/08/2024 22:16

Just 4, sleep around 7/7.30 wakes anytime between 11pm and 4am, naps at around 8am for anything from 40 minutes to 2 hours (one of the joys of complex special needs, he's on some heavy duty meds for his health and is blind so doesn't get the day/night cues that sighted people do).

PoshVanillaWithBlackSpecks · 23/08/2024 22:21

@Ratfinkstinkypink that sounds really tough. I will stop moaning about my 10 hours. Wishing your DC all the best 💐

Dal8257 · 23/08/2024 22:22

My dc at 4yo slept at around 9-30 and would wake up around 8am. They always woke up after 10.5 hours of sleep no matter what time they went to bed; so I figured that was what they needed.

Icanttakethisanymore · 23/08/2024 22:26

Our 3 yr old gets about 10hrs a night so usually goes to bed at 8:30/9ish and wakes up 6:30/7ish. He does sometimes have a big sleep if he’s really tired he might occasionally fall asleep in the car at6pm and sleep through until 5:30/6idh. He wouldn’t do that the next night though. He just doesn’t need that much sleep it seems. Don’t get me started on what happens if he naps 😱

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 23/08/2024 22:28

DD is 4 years 4 months. Goes to bed around 7.45pm, asleep by 8pm.

Wakes any time between 6.45am and 8am, average is around 7.15am.

Since the start of the summer holidays it's been taking her 45-60 mins to fall asleep though and she's sleeping later as a result. I'm hoping when she starts full time school she will go back to her normal times. We have been very active over the holidays. The only thing that seems to tire her out are very long walks x

Lol yours sounds similar to ours. It's not great because you don't get any free time to yourself :(

ItisObvious · 23/08/2024 22:31

4 years old. Wakes at 6 am, has a nap every day 130-3 pm goes to bed at 10-11 pm. Wakes up 3-4 times during night (ASD so I think this is why sleep is tricky)

Mrsmch123 · 23/08/2024 22:43

3 years 3 months - sleeps 8 till 6/7:30 but still has a 2 hour nap each day.

Noseybookworm · 23/08/2024 22:43

Mine were put to bed about 7, read a couple of stories and lights out 7.30ish, they fell asleep pretty quickly. Usually woke 6.30/7am. Do you stay with your little one until they're asleep? I think it's good for them to learn to fall asleep on their own, you being there will prolong the time it takes them to fall asleep I think

I thought we were the only ones with a prolific 3yo napper! I swear all kids on MN seem to have dropped the nap by 18m. 😂

My toddler (also 3y 3m) goes to sleep between 7.30 and 8, and wakes just after 7. He likes to nap for at least a couple of hours almost every day. If he doesn’t nap, he usually falls asleep at the dinner table at 5pm. But it makes minimal difference to bedtime.

LostittoBostik · 23/08/2024 22:53

Youngest DC is same age. No naps anymore. Sleeps from around 8pm to 6.30am, 7am on a good day.

pilaers · 23/08/2024 23:45

DD is 3yrs 8m and she falls asleep around 9pm and is awake at 7am. Naps for 2 hours after lunch. We're happy with the later bedtime as it means we can all spend quality play time with her after nursery/work otherwise it would just be s rushed dinner bath and bed. I still get free time to myself as I tend to go to bed after 1am (always have done even beofre kids).
