What time does your 3-4 year old go to bed and wake up?

DS is 4 in November and in the last few months his is falling asleep later and later, now typically around 9.15pm.

Routine has always been the same since he was 6 months old.

If we start bedtime earlier for "buffer faff time" he will still fall asleep around the same time, so we just end up spending longer doing bed time routines.

He has dropped all naps when he turned 2.
He will wake up anywhere between 6-8 am so sleeps around 10 hours on average.

Even on days that he wakes up at 6 and I think we'll get an early bedtime, he proves me wrong ha.

We eat healthy and are active. DS spends time in nursery and when not we do all sorts like trampoline parks, playgrounds, swimming, dog walks etc.

Am I missing something? Is this just his natural routine? Or is this the norm for kids his age?
I keep seeing posts about lids who go to sleep obediently at 7pm which is so far from my experience.

My DD is 3y11m and she sleeps late around 9.30pm. She gets up at 8.30am weekdays and 9:30am at weekends.

My child is 4y4m and is usually asleep somewhere between 8.15-8.45pm and usually wakes around 7.30-8am. Works well for life at the moment but he'll need to get up a bit earlier for school so we'll have to try and shift bedtime a bit earlier. He definitely seems to have the same night owl tendancies as his parents!

I thought we were the only ones with a prolific 3yo napper! I swear all kids on MN seem to have dropped the nap by 18m. 😂

My toddler (also 3y 3m) goes to sleep between 7.30 and 8, and wakes just after 7. He likes to nap for at least a couple of hours almost every day. If he doesn’t nap, he usually falls asleep at the dinner table at 5pm. But it makes minimal difference to bedtime.

I will be sad when he drops his nap😅it's a few hours for me to recharge after his craziness🙈🤣

My child is the same age as yours, he turns 4 in November. He has 2 big sisters so they often impact on his bedtime, during term time they have a couple of clubs that dont finish until 7:30. We loosely aim for 8-8:30 for bed he normally wakes up around 7/7:30.

Cobblersorchard · 24/08/2024 08:32

My 4 year old is usually in bed for 7.30 but not asleep until 8.30, awake about 8 if no alarm (needs to be up at 7 on weekdays).

She needs about 11 hours but functions fine on 10. She’s a night owl naturally though, left to her own devices she’d be happier on 9-8 or later.

5yr old sleeps 7.30-7 pretty much!

This is useless information on a thread about a three year old.

RaspberryBeretxx · 24/08/2024 08:35

My first was a 10 hour per night child, 9pm-7am (usually with 1 night wake 🤦🏻‍♀️) and zero naps. Second is now 3.5 and exhausted by 7.30, sleeps till 7.30 am ish. I think they’re all different. It’s hard spending all your evening putting them to bed though and not getting much child free time during the evenings.

4yr old does 10 hours a night, I think thats going to go down again soon though.

Some children seem to have set waking times. They are not changeable by external factors within your control. Other children seem to be responsive to external factors and will flex with context so eg if they go to bed late one night they're up late the next day. With my own, I've found that the trick to not driving yourself mad is working out which kid is which and adjust expectations accordingly.

My child of the same age often doesn't sleep until after 10pm! She'll wake at 8 or 9.

I am so with you!! He can keep it up til he’s 47 if he likes 😂

DD just turned 3 goes to bed at 7.45 pm and falls asleep between 8-8.30 pm and wakes up around 6.30-7 AM. She also takes 2 hours nap in the afternoon from 1pm-3pm. She still needs a nap and I haven't forced her to stop that because she gets really cranky after 4pm. I have also kept her preschool hours morning sessions+lunch only because I don't want to force stop naps because she really needs that rest and she is a very active toddler.

From march onwards my daughters bedroom has to be dark when we go up to bed. Her sleep is very sensitive to the longer days and without making upstairs dark her bed time slips later and later. This is the first year we have done it consistently since march and we have had the least drift in bedtime. In previous years we have waited until her sleep drifts
She has just turned 4 we go up to bed at 7 she has meds and we get ready for bed have a cup of oat milk stories teeth and usually we are in bed by 7.30-8 and asleep between 8 and 8.30 waking between 5 and 8 in the morning with 0-2 wake ups depending on reflux and allergies. In previous years by now we would be looking at 9.30 bed times

3.5YO consistently sleeps for 11 hours a night so we’ve opted for 7.30-6.30 as that seems to hit the sweet spot between still having an evening and not being woken at the crack of dawn! As with our older one bedtime will inevitably push later as they get older but they get more independent and tbh less annoying so you don’t wish for bedtime in the same way 🤣

SamanthaVimes · 24/08/2024 19:31

My 4yo DD is usually asleep somewhere between 8:45 and 9:15. Maybe 8:30 on a good day. She’s just not tired before then.

Even when we were on holiday and doing lots of activities she was bright eyed and bushy tailed at 9:30/10:00pm whereas her cousin who is only a couple of months younger was almost falling asleep through dinner at 6:00.

If she has a nap in the car we’re lucky if she goes to sleep before 10. It’s a bit annoying but I genuinely think she’s not tired (she’s not grumpy or anything) so there’s not much we can do about it 🤷‍♀️
