Hello
My daughter is 20 months old and I am wondering when do you put them into a cot bed with a duvet and pillow?

When they learn how to get out of the cot on their own is when you put them in beds because if they can get out of a cot there isn't any point in being in one.

RedCarAndBlueCar · 17/09/2023 19:36

I used a floor bed from 13 months.

Danikm151 · 17/09/2023 19:39

Around 2. My son never learnt to climb out of his cot.(lucky me! ) His is a cot bed so I just had to remove the bars and it’s low down for him. He’s 3 now and I’m considering getting a single bed.

Mine was at -5 months because he learned how to climb out cot . I put a stair gate on his door as it ran straight towards the stair just wanted to stop him wobbling out .

if sleeping happily in cot leave as long as you can

Very much depends on the child, I've transferred mine to a bed when they are moving independently and happy/safe to do so.

This

I was also concerned about him injuring himself while climbing out of the cot

Ours is over 2 and hasn’t managed to climb out yet. Will change the bed configuration when they do - want to keep them contained for as long as possible! They have slept in a bed recently on holiday, we brought a stair gate with us to stop them wandering too far!

Ladyj84 · 17/09/2023 19:46

Our 3 year old son was in his bed from 9 months until that moment he was a very bad sleeper and has been fine ever since..our 16 month girls went into there own beds almost 4 months ago and it's worked out dandy also

Duttercup · 17/09/2023 19:47

I've just moved mine at 3. She's had a duvet and pillow since 2. She never tried to climb out so I just didn't think about it, anything for a quiet life!

UnravellingTheWorld · 17/09/2023 19:49

Mine turned 2 a couple of months ago and he's still in his cot. I'm planning to switch soon.

fancyfrogs · 17/09/2023 19:50

Floor bed from just over 2 as he kept getting a leg up to climb out and I was worried he'd fall. He had a duvet and pillow from about 18m in the cot

modgepodge · 17/09/2023 19:54

3.5 moved to bed, over 4 before we dropped the sleeping bags…😂

im big on ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. She never tried to climb out the cot so I left her in it. She still fitted the sleeping bags and slept great so I kept them, until she started to get up to go to the loo in the evening/early morning then needed help getting back in the sleeping bag which disturbed me. Plus then it was almost summer so less chilly for her if the duvet came off which it inevitably did.

there’s no right or wrong in my opinion, do what works for you.

shhhhdonttell · 17/09/2023 19:58

Okay that's great, thank you everyone!
She hasn't tried to climb out yet and sleeps through so I won't change a thing

With DS1 - 18m old. He kept climbing out of his cot and almost tipped it over a couple of times. He looked ridiculously small in a bed, but was fine with bed guards on the sides.

DS2 - About 2yrs 10m? But he rarely slept more than a couple of hours in his cot anyway tbh. I ended up cosleeping with him a lot as it was the only way to get more than 2 hours' sleep a night! He went straight into a bottom bunk below his brother. And still crawled in with me at 2am more nights than not until he was about 6.

frenchnoodle · 17/09/2023 20:07

1st child was 2.
2nd child was almost 4.

If they are sleeping without problems don't change anything unless you have to.

greenacrylicpaint · 17/09/2023 20:11

dc1 at about a year old when I found them balancing on their belly on the railing of the cot.

TropicalTrama · 17/09/2023 20:13

DD had a cot duvet and toddler pillow (from ikea) in the cot from 13 months but never escaped so didn’t move into a bed until nearly 3, and that was mostly because we felt she needed a warmer duvet which you can’t get in cot sizes. Her brother on the other hand is a master climber and escape artist so has been in a bed with a guard since 15 months. So in short, I’d probably swap to the duvet and pillow but not take sides off the cot until you really have to!

This ^^

There is no right age, just a right time.

This 100% !! If it works don’t fix it . Cannot remember how old my children were but am thinking about 3+ and not climbers…even though their father is actually a top British climber 😂
Grandchild is 4 in a few months time and still loves the cot !

oop · 17/09/2023 20:34

A few months ago at about 22 months. Showing no sign of climbing out but could only go to sleep in my arms and then transferred so wanted to transition to falling asleep on his own without crying and drama etc. So he now has a single bed on the floor so we can lie with him at bedtime. It's brilliant, no regrets and he sleeps soooo much better.

choochooallaboard · 17/09/2023 20:43

18 months.

Wanderinghome · 17/09/2023 21:07

My children both went into beds around 11 months, i think duvets and pillows were used from around 2yrs.

Echobelly · 17/09/2023 21:12

About 2.5 for both - we had #2 on the way when oldest was that age and we wanted them used to a bed well before baby arrived.

Devilsmommy · 17/09/2023 21:15

Mine went in a single bed at 20 months. He could climb out so now he's got single bed with extra high bed rail. Just waiting to see when he figures out how to get over that rail🫣🤣
