Grown up Gro Clock?

mousedogbirdcat · 07/07/2023 12:58

DS is 5 nearly 6, he is an early waker and currently uses a Gro Clock to know when he can come and wake me. It works well but he's furious as he feels it is for babies!

He wants an alarm clock but he can't reliably tell the time or understand a digital clock. He absolutely doesn't need an alarm as he's awake most morning before the Gro Clock turns yellow.

We need something that looks super cool but has the same functions as his Gro Clock.

Any suggestions gratefully received. I've googled my self silly and all I can find is sunrise type lamps that brighten over a period of time.

He's asked for something that is red (stay in bed) at night and green (get up) for morning. I've considered a smart bulb as he currently has a night light but he wants a clock that does this. Help!

We had a digital and covered up the minutes.
Worked pretty well until he could tell the time but obviously means you have to be happy to set it for 6 or 7!

A yoto player is great the clock function you set to show night / day but it's also a audio book player, radio and speaker so it has many uses and it used daily in our house DD6 knows when to get out of bed based on the clock face - also a very early riser!,

We use our Yoto box, the nightlight is set to red overnight and then goes green in the morning. He also falls asleep listening to it at night.

If you have an Alexa/Apple Home type set up, you could use a colour changing lightbulb (perhaps in a lamp) set to change at a particular time.

ISeeTrees · 07/07/2023 13:38

Yoto sounds like what he's looking for (I wonder if he's seen one somewhere as his spec is quite specific?).
When my DC tried the "gro clock is for babies" spiel I reminded them that so was waking Mummy up at daft o'clock and expecting the day to start 🙃

We love our Yoto player for helping with this - it's fantastic!

skkyelark · 07/07/2023 13:42

We have this one: https://purflo.com/sleep-training-clock/, which does a lot of what you want (and does have an alarm), but the colours are blue/yellow. We have it on one of the lowest light settings, and it runs for weeks on a single charge.

That said, if I were buying something similar now, I'd strongly consider a Yoto player.

I can’t help, we have two gro clocks in our house…one for my 12yo and one for my 9yo😂They still love them!

Gettingbysomehow · 07/07/2023 13:53

When DS was five he would go downstairs and watch TV until it was a civilised hour and he knew where the cereal was. He usually fed the cats too.
Surely he can smuse himself at that age before everyone wakes up.

whoami24601 · 07/07/2023 14:01

Another vote for the Yoto here. You can set it to show day/ night like the gro clock but it has so many other functions too.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 07/07/2023 14:06

What about this one
Amazon clock

FlounderingFruitcake · 07/07/2023 14:09

Digital clock and say he can get out of bed if it starts with a 6 or a 7 (whatever you normally do- we say 6 to play in your room, 7 to go downstairs). She’s had it since she was 3 so I can’t imagine an almost 6 year old having an issue, they don’t need to know that there’s 60 minutes in an hour etc.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2023 14:12

My ds had an alarm clock and couldn't disturb us until the first number was 7. He had it from around age 3.

We did this - used the overhead light so it was dimmed at bedtime, off overnight then one colour when he could play quietly and another when he could disturb us - all done by a set routine

We did this - tape over the minutes and wrote the number 7 beside the clock so that they knew it had to be 7 am ( or later!) before they could wake us up

Echoing pp, we use our kids yoto players. Has a clock and behind the time is a sun or a moon which you set the times for. If you turn it over it has a light on the back which can be any colour you like for day and night. Got rid of ds2s groclock when he turned 4 and got a yoto for his birthday. They also love the cards and podcast too which is what we actually bought it for. Both kids (5 and 4) love it.

Ostrichbraid · 07/07/2023 15:26

Or how about a timer, so music or a story or something come on at a reasonable waking up time? And then a different thing when it's time to actually get up?

Ostrichbraid · 07/07/2023 15:28

Just looked up yoto and it seems perfect

CatsOnTheChair · 07/07/2023 16:25

We have sunrise clocks - but that's not the colour change you are after...

Ohjustboreoff · 07/07/2023 16:55

I have the opposite problem as my DD is a very heavy sleeper. She has a sunrise alarm clock but it would work equally well as a grown up Gro Clock. And it was only @£25!

mousedogbirdcat · 07/07/2023 21:34

Ahh thanks everyone, looks like I need to read up about yoto players!

A cheaper alternative would be a digital clock and a smart bulb I think but reading the time alone would be confusing as we have two wake up times 6.30 on my work days, 7 on any other day 😬

Ive been reading up, love the yoto app, alarm function and moon/sun display.

Do any of the yoto owners here Know if the night light can be activated with the player stood up, not tipped on it's screen??
