Aptamil Pepti 1 - Help!

Looking for some opinions on Aptamil Pepti 1 - FTM so this is very new territory!

Baby was previously on Hipp Organic 1 but the Health Visitor thought we should trial Pepti to see if it would help DS symptoms. DS (14 weeks) has always had reflux and tends to bring back up some of his feeds. He had also been sounding snuffly like he had a cold, especially during the night which seemed to be formula related.

When we transitioned onto Pepti DS was very upset, it was a total nightmare, but we turned a corner after a couple of days and was much more settled, so decided to press on. We are 2 weeks in and I am finding if I go any longer than 2.5 hours between feeds that DS is inconsolable, he will break his heart crying until we feed him. As the feeds are then too frequent, he tends to bring these back up. This was not the case on Hipp. The Pepti has also made his reflux worse as it is thinner, and the watery spit up smells awful in comparison. He also has terrible gas and loose stools.

Bottom line is HV wants us to press on and if Pepti doesn't suit, said we should see a dietician. Personally, I think her advice is wrong and continuing to feed DS with Pepti is cruel. I just think she is making out of a molehill as DS is clearly not lactose intolerant. DH and I would prefer to move back onto normal formula (possibly Kendamil as we have heard good things for reflux babies). Can we just ignore the HV and follow our instincts? How much harm would it really do to try another formula?

I'd just go back on the normal formula. I've had two very pukey newborns. Perfectly happy, they've just spewed a lot. You don't need permission to do anything - he's your baby!

DD2 is breastfed but we did top up with formula at the beginning and Kendamil was the gentlest on her tummy that we tried.

Beat advice you will he given. He is your baby and if you think he settles better with the normal formula just change it back.

You can absolutely ignore the HV also by the way. HV told me feeding my baby 5oz at his age and weight was "too much " I ignored her as he wanted 5 oz and wasn't sick or showed signs of over feeding. Weight gain has been perfect and he is a very happy boy

I'd change back too. My son has CMPA and pepti reduced his symptoms dramatically.

december2020 · 05/09/2022 22:02

I had a super refluxy baby - it was awful.
But Hipp Organic anti reflux or Aptimil anti reflux milk worked absolute wonders.
He was a totally different baby.
It may not be right for your DS, but potentially try a pack and see how he gets on.
We went through any and every milk (and had suspected lactose intolerance too which wasn't the case, he just had really bad reflux) and these two worked the best for him.

Thank you so much everyone! I stopped feeding DS the pepti this morning and moved back to ordinary formula, the difference even after just a few hours is amazing, fingers crossed!

Amazing to hear! Always trust your mamma instinct first - HVs mean well but every baby is different. Fingers crossed it works better xx

Hi, hope you don’t mind jumping on this thread.. we’ve recently been put in to Aptamil Pepti as LO has suspected CMA and in 24 hours she’s gone from 5-7 runny dirty nappies to none and just farting out lots of undigested milk solids! She has a LOT of wind as well, more than she did before though it’s coming out not trapped. Does that sound normal for this formula? I haven’t been able to find anything online! X

sweetschocpop · 08/09/2022 09:50

We are also on aptamil pepti 1 and are wondering if she should be on it!!

7 weeks and she's been unsettled since week 4 - we tried cow and gate 1 and then comfort but now on aptamil pepti but I think it's too thin and she's bringing clear fluid up a lot and crying inconsolably at times

It's so hard to know what to do x

Allegra123 · 08/09/2022 10:52

@Squishy22 I'm not sure about your exact situation but with my DS we experienced an immediate change from yellow normal poos to green runny sludge within 24 hours of changing to Pepti. His farts also smelled terrible. In our case the nappies never really resolved themselves and he was so lethargic. According to our Health Visitor there is a transition period when changing formulas, but maybe best to speak with your Health Visitor or GP for further advice?

@sweetschocpop Our DS was exactly like this. The watery spit up was constant (it also smelled terrible) and we got to a point where he would be inconsolable for hours. To me I think he was losing so much and the formula was so thin he was starving and had a sore stomach. We are trialling Kendamil Organic as I heard it can be good for reflux, failing which we will try a reflux specific milk (trying to avoid too thick formula). So far we have seen a huge improvement, the watery sick has stopped completely and his reflux is so much better. Every baby is different though and its just a case that ours never had a milk allergy in the first place!

Thanks @Allegra123 sounds as though we’ve had a very different result from the Aptamil Pepti nappy wise; she’s gone from multiple runny nappies to the “correct” consistency but it’s made her a completely different baby 😫she’s normally a bit whiny but she just screeches all the time now and is never happy which is so sad to see. She never seems satisfied from a feed and is always spitting up now which she very rarely ever did. Going to have to go back GP Monday, seems cruel to keep her on this formula, it’s making her (and me!) absolutely miserable 😔

strawberrysummer19 · 15/09/2022 09:44

@@Squishy22 hi how did you get on Monday?

My lo still hasn't settled and this week I've reached rock bottom. I'm exhausted and I just don't know what to do! She's still on aptamil pepti 1 I feel my GPS don't really know they just guess? We have been referred to a dietitian but that's 3 wks away.

Sometimes lo does settle like her feed this morning she did she is now asleep but yesterday had a 2 hr scream after her afternoon feed?! Just feel so anxious. I have no idea what the next steps are

We're your Gp helpful? X

strawberrysummer19 · 15/09/2022 09:46

@december2020 see I'm wondering if I should change to either of these......not convinced she is cmpa x she has a lot of sick after feeds so think it's reflux x

Squishy22 · 15/09/2022 11:07

Hi @strawberrysummer19 I feel you!! 😞 it’s absolutely exhausting isn’t it 😢
GP said we had to persist with the Pepti for at least 2 more weeks and gave us some carobel to thicken it up and Gaviscon for the reflux. I couldn’t get my head around how to prep them but thankfully I looked it up as you’re not meant mix them!!!
She’s drinking it a bit more now it’s thicker but is still very temperamental with her feeds and super fussy and has horrendous wind that wakes her constantly all night. I am shattered as husband doesn’t help with feeds and we still got best part of 2 weeks to go and then go back to cows milk formula to see if it starts up again and if it does then refer to dietician. God knows how long that will take.
I’m still not convinced but am begrudgingly following what GP says and hope they are right but also feel like it’s the beginning of a long nightmare for us.
I really hope you can get some positive progress with the dietician x

strawbereysummer19 · 15/09/2022 20:10

@Squishy22 oh god that sounds horrendous! You poor thing.

Another 2 weeks 😩well I'm a loss of what to do. My Gp doesn't seem to know

I've tried carabel but not sure I see a difference
She hasn't been projectile sick but still little bits
She was settled all day so 4 feeds and the last one just now screaming the place down for
An hour ?! So unsure if it's a reaction to that or if that's just her ?!

Sorry you have no help with the night feeds
My hubby does them from 9pm-5am and I take over at 5am and I go to bed at 9pm so i can get solid sleep and then he sleeps in the day to catch up. Works well for us. He can do his work around it most days. Esp when it's so hard work and mentally draining

X

Charlotte1515 · 15/09/2023 15:53

the Same thing has happened with my baby girl with the pepti 1 milk allergy formula she’s having 6 ounces and should be going every 5 hours without a bottle I’m lucky if she even makes it to 4 hours she cry inconsolable, I’m just not sure what to do.at first I did see a big change in her but it’s like she’s never content with the formula she keep spitting up even 2 hours after it’s like the formula doesn’t want to stay down and she has a reflux aswell I feels like im just going round and round in circles and that she’s never going to be okay she’s 11weeks old do you have any advice?

Allegra123 · 15/09/2023 23:27

@Charlotte1515 For my baby Pepti 1 milk just didn't work at all. In the end, I opted to go with my gut instinct and try a different formula despite our HV's insistence that we stay the course. In my case, baby's potential symptoms of dairy allergy were minor, and I was pretty confident the health visitor was wrong. I was certain it was just reflux.

In the end we changed to Kendamil Organic because it is meant to be so much gentler on little stomachs as it doesn't use fish oil (which can exacerbate reflux). For us it proved to be a game changer from day one. Baby thrived on it and is now a solid 15 month old, with absolutely no reflux or dairy issues. Even our HV was impressed!

I can't speak for your baby, and only you know your own circumstances, but if deep down it feels wrong to you, then it probably is. At the end of the day, you know your baby, so don't feel pressured into putting your baby through something that isn't working. There are so many different things that can be tried. Sending big hugs and solidarity!

dementedpixie · 15/09/2023 23:36

@Charlotte1515 no baby at 11 weeks old "should be going 5 hours" between feeds. Do you make yourself go 5 hours between eating/drinking? You should be feeding when your baby is hungry rather than trying to make them wait

Kepalm · 20/11/2023 00:01

Hey! Did the Kendamil Organic help with your baby’s congestion? We were put on Aptamil Pepti and having a similar situation as yours! She spits up SO much from it as it’s so thin!

Allegra123 · 20/11/2023 09:59

@Kepalm Yes, Kendamil was actually life changing for us from day one. We went with the organic version as we heard it was better for sensitive stomachs and we honestly had no problems. We now have a super healthy 18 month old. Every baby is different, but the pepti was a disaster!

Amyj91x · 16/04/2024 12:34

Hi, how did it go with changing? We’ve just been put on aptamil pepti 1 due to congestion and mucusy nappies. He’s now having really bad wind. He was on hipp anti reflux and he’s not spitting up much, it’s just bad wind and im hoping the congestion will ease. Think if the pepti one doesn’t clear the congestion I should go back on hipp organic?

Kimrut89 · 24/04/2024 18:50

Amyj91x how Are you getting on. I've just switched from hipp or pepti today

Amyj91x · 25/04/2024 06:42

He’s doing okay. He’s still congested but im gonna do the 4 weeks and see if it eases! If not I’m just gonna go back to hipp normal. His poos have got a lot better

Hje2024 · 22/05/2024 21:03

@Amyj91x how did you get on with pepti?? My son is on for congestion and runny poos. He’s been on it nearly a week and the poos has changed slightly although smell horrendous now haha but the congestion is still there. Just wondering did your little ones congestion clear?

Amyj91x · 22/05/2024 21:06

So we’ve gone back to normal milk. I think his mucusy poos were from the congestion.
but interestingly enough… we went to an osteopath. He has tension in his head from birth, and delivery. So we now do exercises and it’s acrually
helping. He’s still congested but sleeping so much better and not as much! I highly recommend going to see one!
