8 mo drank from dog bowl...help!

Hello..just looking for some advice really
My 8mo is mobile and curious. Caught her today with lips round rim of dog water bowl. I wiped her mouth and face, gave her some clean water to drink. She seems absolutely fine / has eaten lunch and gone to nap fine.

I feel like a dreadful parent - I was in the same room when it happened but was looking for something in a cupboard and obviously she moves faster than I thought (she was also occupied with a toy when I first turned round). I have baby proofed a lot of the house, but obviously more needs to be done.

Any advice / words of wisdom? I'm worried she may catch something or get ill. Please tell me other babies have done this..

this made me smile.. She will be fine. My 2 year old DS drank sea water on holiday recently.. 😐that made for fun nappies but he’s okay! He regularly eats the sand from his sandpit.. he’s so fast and does it before I can stop him!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/06/2022 19:26

Don't worry. DS2 (a) swallowed a ball-bearing from his brother's magnetic modelling set (b) drank water from the fish tank 🤢 (c) brought a dead mouse back from the field behind our house to 'show me' 🤢🤢 and (d) decided that he wanted to eat a raw potato one afternoon. He's still alive at 15, 6' 2" and still made of mischief

They're drawn to the things you don't want them to have because they're the only novel thing left to explore Grin

I think drinking water out of the dog bowl could be the least harmful think most kids get into 😂She will be fine.

MountainMummy95 · 10/06/2022 20:44

Please dont worry OP

These things happen... let me tell you about a couple of my parenting fails:

-caught my 1 yo playing with matches... didnt realise she could reach our mantelpiece.

-she pulled the dishwasher open (it wasnt tightly shut) and came running at me brandishing a kitchen knife like something from Chucky.

I swear I didnt know I could move as fast as when that happened. Now she calls knives 'NO!' (Yes, she screams it the way I did!)

Literally felt like the worst fails of my life... I phoned my mum, crying... and she laughed and said 'yeah, you can't take your eye off them - you fell down the stairs at 9 months because I forgot to close the stair gate. It might have knocked out a brain cell or too, but you seem ... okay.' 😂 hope this makes you feel better!!

Mine has drank and paddled in dog bowl and shared a biscuit with dog. Good news children with dogs are less likely to have childhood asthma. My bet suggested worming dogs once a month just in case.

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 20:47

Lol she’ll be fine OP. I’ve got 3 and they’ve all done stuff like this, no harm done. Grin

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 10/06/2022 20:50

Probably good for her gut microbiome.

stillherenow · 10/06/2022 20:51

I turned around once and mine was eating the cat food !

Amichelle84 · 10/06/2022 20:54

Oh don't worry, they will put worse in their mouth. My 8month old loves to eat the cats food and water, I'm forever chasing him away. We were in the garden today and I took a snail out of his mouth...

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 10/06/2022 20:54

My DD was always teeny tiny for her age. She had very little appetite and it was impossible to get her to eat any protein. I turned around once to find her eating the cat’s food. I DID stop her, but I’m not gonna lie, I was kind of glad she’d got a few bites in. 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/06/2022 20:55

She’ll be absolutely fine 😊

Letsgoforaskip · 10/06/2022 21:01

@Hugasauras I love that 🤣
This has made me smile. I had a puppy and a baby at the same time with two of my children. The first time, I was horrified if the baby got hold of a dog toy. The next time, I was so busy with three small children, a dog and a puppy, that I was much more laid back. Sometimes the baby had a dog toy and sometimes the dog had a baby toy. Everyone survived and that baby is now a 6’3” 18 year old so I don’t think it hampered him too much!

dunpaying · 10/06/2022 21:18

Oh don't worry OP

My youngest was found eating ants from the mud many moons ago

He's now over 6ft with no lasting damage

😂😂😂

emwithme · 10/06/2022 21:22

My DD ate the dry cat food...cue me googling to see if it contained anything she was allergic to.

It didn't. I let her crack on while I got dinner cooked.

Felixthefish · 10/06/2022 21:27

My now 12 year old had a good chew on the dog's rawhide bone several times as a baby. Dog was unimpressed cut child was fine!

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/06/2022 21:29

Oh god mine did this for years. Ate rabbit food. Drank from dog bowls ate the dog biscuits, or drank the rabbits water bottle. I dont even own a dog so she saved it all for friends houses just to be sure to make me look.as terrible as possible.

Think she actually preferred pet food to human food 🤔

Shes 11 now and fine
Don't worry 🤣

AegonT · 10/06/2022 21:43

She'll be fine. In my NCT group with my first baby one of the Mum's bought her dog to a lot of the meet-ups and it was always licking the babies' faces. None of them got tummy bugs till they started nursery/pre-school. Kids who grow up on farms have less allergies!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 10/06/2022 21:45

She will be fine, I caught my 6 month old sooking on our dogs soggy tuggy 🤢

jefficake · 10/06/2022 21:48

@UpToMyElbowsInDiapers hahahaha.
@MountainMummy95 amazing. knives are NOOOOOOs. This is fantastic. I hope she never grows out of saying this.

oh my word, what wonderful people you are. thank you. Children are great sources of anxiety and wonder I'm eating chocolate and drinking wine and my LO is happily asleep upstairs, hopefully enjoying all the extra immunity 😝

All will be fine 😬

If I were you screenshot your post & save it. when you come across it in a couple years you’ll have a good chuckle.

my two worked out at a young age they could get the dogs to clean them down after meals.
it was one less job for me, both kids and dogs approved & it came without the tantrums. In the next 12 months you’ll start to stress about these things a lot less as you approach the peak “licking” phase.

MsChatterbox · 10/06/2022 21:54

My daughter ate a snail in the garden. And I've had to dig bird poo out from under her nails. Thankfully didn't witness what she did with that!

YRGAM · 10/06/2022 21:56

MagpiePi · 10/06/2022 14:08

A friend found her toddler eating the cat food with a spoon while the cat was clamped under one arm. Both were fine.

😂I love this

StarDolphins · 10/06/2022 22:00

Honestly she’ll be fine! The amount of grotty things kids touch then put fingers in mouth!

my daughter put 1 of her teacups in the dogs bowl, then took a sip before I could get to her! I was mortified & rang health visitor who wasn’t concerned in the slightest & said there’s worse to come!

she also took a bite of a dog treat that I gave her to give our dog & screamed the house down (while sobbing “nice Mummy nooo” when I made her spit it out🤣

Bobishere · 10/06/2022 22:07

Please don't worry.
This one be one of those stories you tell when she's older
