Newborns finger red and swollen?

ebbyniko1108 · 16/05/2022 14:46

Hello everyone, I have a 9 day old daughter. Today I have noticed that she has got a swollen and red finger. It looks like as if she has got something under her finger nail and on the outside as well. I will attach a picture. Have you experienced anything similar? I am very concerned...

OP it’s likely you’ll be told to take her to A&E (assuming your GP can’t see you), in your position I’d be tempted to take her there now because the queue will be worse later.

Would antibiotics harm my baby?😞😞

Not getting her treated would harm her! Really really best to go A&E if the doctor won’t see you

FandangoMango · 16/05/2022 15:26

No but an untreated infection could. If you have any questions about the antibiotics then you can discuss with the Doctor when you are seen.

Why would you think antibiotics would harm your DC?

Are you still under your midwife? If so contact her whilst you wait for the GP

I really don’t think you are thinking clearly, I don’t want to sound rude as it is a very hard time with a newborn. Drugs harming your baby shouldn’t be the priority here or the questions you are asking. It is very clear from every response her she needs to be seen by a doctor today. If your doctor doesn’t want to see her today then go to A&E, you’ll likely been seen quicker with a young baby.

Yeah my son had paronychia recently - got a video appt with the GP who prescribed flucloxacillin. It's recovered now, but the punchline to this is that my son is 3yrs old. Absolutely go to A&E!

nonono89 · 16/05/2022 15:40

Antibiotics won't harm your baby. My newborn was on 3 types of antibiotics when he was 2 weeks old for 10 days. And he's absolutely fine.

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 16/05/2022 15:46

No antibiotics won't hurt your baby but leaving that untreated she could lose the finger

MiseryWIthAStent · 16/05/2022 15:49

Aww, glad she's getting seen OP, I'm not sure why people are being nasty, it's hard when your baby is a newborn, you're running on empty, you're hormonal and they seem to tiny and delicate. And to be fair to you, you didn't actually say 'no I won't give my baby antibiotics' you asked a question. My DD had a nasty infection when she was a born and was on multiple antibiotics while they got it under control when she was 4 days old and she's fine OP. And hasn't had any since!(and she turns 9 tomorrow!)

TurquoiseSwirl · 16/05/2022 15:49

That’s good that she’s being seen.
pack an overnight bag for both of you incase she needs to go to the hospital.

of course you are worried but you are projecting on the wrong thing. All antibiotics have tiny risks but the risks of a serious infection in a tiny baby untreated are big and serious like losing limbs. Take whatever treatment she is prescribed

Barrawarra · 16/05/2022 15:49

Oh my wee one had this in her first weeks. Yes it needs seen but don’t panic. They just gave her antibiotic cream and a wee dressing. Hopefully it’s not serious for her either.

BertieBotts · 16/05/2022 15:51

Antibiotics are harmful if they are overused. Using them to treat an infection is perfectly safe, and much better than the alternative.

Explain any worries you have to the doctor and I'm sure they'll be able to reassure you, or explain why it's the best course of action if that's what they advise.

Leag1 · 16/05/2022 17:01

As she was so small doctor preferred us to be admitted. I've been admitted to hospital with 10 day old baby twice. Once private and once NHS. NHS was far superior.
The infection was in all my daughter's fingers and it was during lockdown April 2020 so this was the only was to get proper care.

Update: we have been to the gp. The doctor managed to take some of the infection out and said it would be less painful for the baby now. She gave us Fucidin ointment to use 3 times a day. She said we should keep an eye on it and if it should get worse then we should call the gp again.

Thank you so much for your understanding!! Sometimes people can be very rude. I am only thinking about my little one maybe I am over worrying but she is very special to us as we have tried for years. So when even something little happens I get panicky and might ask the supist questions ever. I am glad that there are people who understand me like you! Thank you😊

DD had this... when asleep i carefully lifted the end of the nail from where it was in bedded in her finger, cleaned with cooled boiled water and it was fine the next day. Some people also say apply breast milk.

Its an ingrowing nail, be careful how you cut the sides next time... cut across the nail.

@ebbyniko1108 ok serious question now. Would you take antibiotics for an infection? What about if she was born with strep b meningitis or an infection from birth. Would you also question whether your child needed antibiotics? You really need to get a bit of a grip here. Drs don't prescribe antibiotics for fun Hmm

First of all I would kindly ask you to be a bit more nice to people and do not be so rude. Obviously I would go for the antibiotics if the doctors think that is what we should go for. I have never said that I wont allow antibiotics. I have only asked if there are known risks. Its my baby and I might be concerned about anything and I dont think I have asked anything wrong. You should get a grip first. Thanks
