Newborns finger red and swollen?

ebbyniko1108 · 16/05/2022 14:46

Hello everyone, I have a 9 day old daughter. Today I have noticed that she has got a swollen and red finger. It looks like as if she has got something under her finger nail and on the outside as well. I will attach a picture. Have you experienced anything similar? I am very concerned...

I would still keep a super close eye on her finger, especially making sure the redness doesn’t get bigger or track along her finger.

bloodywhitecat · 16/05/2022 19:27

I think it was a perfectly reasonable question to ask, at no point did the OP say she wasn't going to give the baby antibiotics she simply asked if they were safe for such a young baby. Let's face it, antibiotics can upset an adult's digestive system so I think it is a natural question to ask, lots of people don't have experience of newborns and antibiotics.

I am glad your baby has been seen and is getting some treatment, I hope she gets better quickly.

I have first called the gp and whilst waiting for a doctor to call I have posted on here. If I should not ask a question then why is there a network like this? Go and mind your own business

Like I said I have first called the gp. Whilst I was waiting for a doctors call I have posted on here to see if anyone else experienced something similar? What is wrong about this?

I feel sorry for you that you feel the need to be such a superior dick to a new mother... 🙄🙄🙄

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/05/2022 19:44

Keep a really close eye on it, the slightest change and get seen at once.

Congratulations 😊

heldinadream · 16/05/2022 19:45

OP you haven't done anything wrong. Ignore them. It's a very delicate anxious time with a new baby and it's hard not to be emotional and think clearly.
I'm so glad your baby's ok and been seen. Her little hand looked so sore.

I bet she's as cute as a button! And congratulations. Flowers

I think you are not wanting to understand. I SAID I CALLED THE GP FIRST. Afterwards I have posted on here whilst waiting for the doctors call. But I am not sure why you are being so mean?

Bloody hell @ProclivityForPyrotechnics can you seriously not understand the worry of a new mother?! You are the exact reason for the saying "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all".

Op I hope your little one is ok. Everything seems so scary at first with a newborn but it will get easier over time.

I think it's really unfair you've posted this. She is anxious about her baby for gods sake! She called the GP and then came on here after she'd already called them. She was looking for support and advice from anyone who may have experienced similar - not to be criticised!

Exactly. Ignore the bullies, OP. Some people are just mean. You haven’t done anything wrong. And it’s good to ask questions about medication. You need to be armed with your own knowledge as well. You just reminded me that I took my son to the GP with an i growing nail that was much much less severe looking than your daughter’s finger. It wasn’t even red. No one laughed at me and the doctor was very kind about it. It’s a steep learning curve with your first and it’s hard to separate what’s first time mum anxiety and what’s a real concern. It gets easier as it goes on.

LilyMumsnet · 16/05/2022 19:51

Hi all

OP has contacted the GP and is waiting to hear back.
She is looking for support during a worrying time. Please bear this in mind before posting.

WTFGG · 16/05/2022 19:53

Glad you’ve been seen, hopefully the fucidin will do the job and clear up the infection sharpish!! It’s always a worry having a newborn but you’ve done great and got her seen straight away and she’s now on treatment. Do keep close eye on her finger, any concerns or if you think the redness is spreading, swelling getting worse and infection looks worse don’t hesitate to contact doctor again.
Congratulations on you brand new baby.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 16/05/2022 19:57

@ebbyniko1108 Please ignore the meanies (a new low for MN being unkind to a new mother!!!!)

My DS had 4 lots of antibiotics before he was 4 months, he’s currently sat covered in sweat after 2 hours of football….so seems not to have effected him too much.

Enjoy cuddles they go too soon

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/05/2022 20:04

Bathing it with salt water wouldn't hurt either before applying the cream.

AntsAntsAntsAnts · 16/05/2022 20:05

Hi OP! Glad you’ve been seen. Just a word of warning re: those topical antibiotics- they might not be enough if the infection is established so please keep an eye out for temperature (straight to a&e if so, especially overnight), or the redness getting worse or spreading. Hope she’s doing better soon.

Motnight · 16/05/2022 20:10

Congratulations on your new baby, Op.

It's such a difficult and confusing time with a newborn.

Motherofplants · 16/05/2022 20:17

My newborn had this after I cut her nails :/ (Second baby so Im not new to this). Dr instructed me to do warm saline hand baths (easily done with a bowl during naps) at least 3x per day and to call back if it spread or got worse. On day 2 it started oozing pus from the side of the nail, then the redness reduced quickly. I continued the saline baths until it looked like a normal finger again just in case. Good luck x

Hey! Thanks for your response. How do you do warm saline baths?
