Argh my baby’s hair!

My little cherub is 14 weeks old and has the most ridiculous interesting hair- sticks up on end in places, hardly anything growing towards the front making her look like her hairline is really really far back, and bald patches to boot! She is still extremely cute, but I’m just wondering whether anyone can relate? And any idea when we might start to see a recognisable head of hair?? Also I might be imagining it but I feel like in places it could actually be thinning out even more as time goes on- is that normal?

Yes hair loss is perfectly normal

Both mine were born with a crop of dark hair which fell out and was replaced with blonde regrowth-it was a look! Grin

ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 09:47

@worldweary45 ooh good to know, what age would you say they had their ‘proper’ hair? I can’t say I’ll be disappointed if my DD’s hair starts again from scratch!

They are all different - eldest DD was completely bald until 14mths then very wispy till she was about 5. She needed a short style to help it thicken up. It is lovely long and thick now. Youngest DD was born with loads of dark straight hair, fell out gradually over 6mths, then replaced with blond curls. Now thick straight and brown.

Haha I could write this post about my 2 year old 😂 I'm now constantly chasing her with a wet brush

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/07/2020 10:23

My ds was also born with a head of black hair which fell out in the style of an old man - going bald on the crown at first .
After complete baldness until 6 mths old , blond curls grew in .
After that it got really long and decided to cut it myself- never do that- he looked like Cilla Black !

LesNanas · 06/07/2020 10:27

DS was born with thick, spiky dark hair which gradually thinned till he had a completely different texture of blonde hair by about a year, I think?

Sunnydayshereatlast · 06/07/2020 10:39

My dd's hair grew straight upwards earning her the nn The Grinch...
At nearly 14 she is still Grinch!!
Absolutely beautiful hair now though!
Learn to crochet and stick a hat on her!!

Alarae · 06/07/2020 11:07

My DD is 17 weeks old and she has wisps of her at the nape of her neck, a thin tupee looking thing on top that thins at the front and barely anything on the back of her head.

It's certainly a look, which I sympathise with!

ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 11:14

@MadauntofA wow big changes for yours then! But success stories all round which gives me heart.

@1940s Haha I finally think I’ve tamed it when she’s just had a bath and then 10 mins later I glance over at her and it’s back to its old tricks!

@Dontforgetyourbrolly yep the ‘old man’ look sounds familiar. Cilla Black!!! 🤣🤣🤣

@LesNanas interesting that the texture changed aswell, I wonder genetically why it comes out so differently at first?

@Sunnydayshereatlast hahaha the Grinch, that rings true here too. She’s like a cross between Jack Nicholson and Dominic Cummings 🙈

Well thanks for your replies everyone, sounds like I need to be patient and stop peering over the side of her crib every morning expecting to see an abundance of lustrous auburn curls!

@Alarae we need to combine your DD’s hair at the top with my DD’s weird fluffy clump at the back! And someone else will have to provide some sort of fringe!

Having older dc nothing surprises me in general. One dc once drew a smiley face on new sibling's bald patch at the back..
One day I noticed my brown haired dd had orange eyebrows. Totally expected giggles and an admission of an orange pen incident..
But no it was dd showing signs of going ginger!! The most amazing hair - now waist length at 14..
Eyebrows toned down in time but omg they were orange!!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 06/07/2020 13:58

My son was born with a full head of ginger hair. He lost it all except a strip at the back. Hes now grown blonde hair on top, but still has the ginger strip at the back. Maybe one day his hair will match?!

TeddyIsaHe · 06/07/2020 14:09

Dd was born with a huge amount of dark hair, the midwives were exclaiming about it as I was pushing her out - rather distracting whilst crowning!

She went very baldy at around 4 months, rocked the receding hairline for a while and it’s grown back into beautiful golden waves I’d sell my house to be able to achieve!

Sunnydayshereatlast · 06/07/2020 14:29

This is dd about 10..

Argh my baby’s hair!
ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 14:36

@Letsallscreamatthesistene you can call it his go faster stripe! I have a bright blonde stripe down the back of my head (rest of my hair is mousey dark blonde) which I honestly never knew about until I was into my 20s and a hairdresser commented on it!

ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 14:43

@TeddyIsaHe I had the midwives commenting on DD’s hair during the birth too, very disconcerting! That plus the fact that she twisted her head around 180 degrees before I’d pushed her shoulders out! 😳

@Sunnydayshereatlast your daughter’s hair is incredible! How do you get anything done? I’d be constantly plaiting it!

OP posts:
BiBabbles · 06/07/2020 14:49

My older daughter did that to, turned her head and spat out amniotic fluid towards her father. It was so weird cause I could feel her moving, both because I was holding her head and because she was only part out and she needed her arms rearranged (for a second, it was thought the cord was around her neck, turned out it was her arms)

Baby hair can be so weird. Mine have all been different, but with my younger daughter - she was born with spikey ginger hair. At about 3 months, she got really bad cradle cap and it all came out. She lived in hats for ages as she lost it just in time for winter. Grew back in later the same light brown as her siblings but it still looks like her ginger father's hair in dim light.

Imtootired · 06/07/2020 14:49

In some cultures they shave a baby’s head so the hair grows back thick and even. I was so shocked when I saw my friends baby bald! I probably wouldn’t do it myself but it’s an idea

Sunnydayshereatlast · 06/07/2020 15:04

I do!!
Grin
Although her dsis does it better!!

ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 15:47

@BiBabbles I heard my partner telling the baby about that moment when he was changing her nappy the other day, it obviously made quite an impression on him and he didn’t have the joys of being covered in amniotic fluid! 😂 I think hats might be the way forward now she’s going to be going out in public a bit more..

@Imtootired yes you’re right actually, I’d love to know if that works! Don’t think I’d have the guts to shave her hair though, zany as it is!

Baby hairloss is normal. DS2 had a full head of dark hair when he was born. It was all gone by about 3 months and then it grew through really white blonde. He's 5 and it's kind of mousey blonde now. Both of mine were about a year old before they had an amount worth brushing/doing anything with.

sohypnotic · 06/07/2020 16:12

Yep completely normal, the attached photos were my DD at birth, 4 months when she lost most her hair, and 2.5 yrs. After losing her hair it was mostly back by 8 months all though finer, and wasn't until probably 16 months when it started to look like proper hair/ recognisable to her now.

Argh my baby’s hair!

It worked great for my friend, it looked so nice when it grew back but I wouldn’t have the guts and it’s so interesting to see what their hair will look like naturally

ArnottsEyebrows · 06/07/2020 18:14

@Fatted hm OK so could be a year. Crazy that your DS went from dark to white blonde!

@sohypnotic wow thanks for the pictures! What a difference in each of the three stages! Your DD has gorgeous hair, looks like she’s had a bouncy blow dry!
