What did you do for their 1st birthday?

My DD is one soon, and we are a bit stuck as to what to do, its on a Saturday and neither of us are working on that day.

I thought about taking her to a farm, but if it rains that might be a bit rubbish.

We don't live in a big city, and don't want to travel that far.

took ds1 to an aquarium and had lunch in a place with a ball park. Will do something similar with ds2 next month.

we had a bbq for our friends (family live too far away) with a bday cake. didn't know too many little ones then so it was a really laid back afternoon ( not that it couldn't be with little ones of course!)

When DD1 turned 1 we had my brother's family staying - his kids were then 2, 5, 7 and 9 so that made a party! Also had neighbour in with her son who was 1½. We had a small chocolate cake and DD1 decorated herself and the table with it.

What about your families, Jen? Won't they want to see her first birthday?

Had family and friends over for a bbq. (realy used it as an excuse to throw a party for us!!) Loved his swing and his slide (indulgent grand parents....)

We are seeing them the next weekend Jan we live away and wanted to be home for her first birthday, although my mum might come up. Friends are coming round for a little tea party in the afternoon, and there will be a few young children there then

Had our friends round to drink champagne. He didn't notice it was his birthday, but we had a lovely time!

for dd - we had a little tea party with some ante natal friends, god parents and family.

for ds - spent the day collecting mum's death certificate and registering death followed by a very brief tea party with inlaws.

Seriously, we went on holiday the day before and although we remembered to take all DS's cards etc with us, come the morning we merrily went to breakfast, spent the morning by the pool etc and it wasn't until lunchtime that my mum said
"oh dear, I forgot to give T has birthday card" and DH and I looked at each other in horror.

My family and friends have never let us forget it and we get teased that DS will be scarred for life!

For DD's first birthday we had both sets of grandparents, auntie, uncle and other uncle round. Also had our friend's with their 18 month old, and a set of DD's godparents (stayong over at tie). Had a little tea party all afternoon. Lots of present opening and fun.

As ds twins have a birthday only a few days after Christmas we wanted to do something really special so each year we will take them out somewhere.

Okay so the past two years have been the zoo but as they absolutely love animals, particularly the jaguar!

an afternoon tea party for ds and his 4 friends, their mums and dads and grandparents. After the grandparents left, the mums and dads continued the party with copious amounts of wine and more indulgent foods late into the night

DS had his naming ceremony on his first birthday so we had a biggish birthday party come 'christening' do. Most people I know have a family and close friends tea party on the 1st birthday though.

Just had both sets of grandparents over and auties etc. That was enough for dd - she loved all the attention (in fact, got a bit overwhelmed by it all)

dd was 1 a couple of weeks ago and we just had close family over for a glass of champagne and some bits and pieces of party food and of course the cake. It was enough for dd, lots of presents and some kiddies music and just having a good time really.

We took dd to Prague for her first birthday. And, as luck would have it, she woke up very crabby with a fever AND it was a bank holiday where no pharmacies were open to sell us baby paracetemal. So we struggled through a miserable first birthday. Hope the second one goes better.

ALternatively, have you kept in touch with your prenatal group. Maybe you could organise a joint birthday party for kiddies and parents.

It was my DD 1st birthday yesterday - we had planned the farm, but it rained, so we went to Bluewater, shopping. She refused to sleep in the buggy so moaned for ages, then went to bed early so Dh and i had a bottle of wine and watched a video!
We did have grandparents over on saturday for a little party though, and have promised to take her to the farm when it is nice again!!! Next Summer!

orgot to see we both spent the whole day saying "i can't believe she's ne - hasn't it gone quickly" And we both had a little cry remembering the highs and lows of her first year! Soft as sh*t!

Got in some champagne and congratulated each other on surviving the first year - had a Pooh bear family birthday tea party and did that farm trip!

I went to the baby cinema with a friend and her son, then we went for a curry then went home and watched the england euro 2004 late afternoon match. He had a birthday tea with just me and his dad. He ate "healthy" organix crisps, biscuit, birthday cake and a sniff of pink champagne. He then threw up.

With curry, football and throwing up it was more of a teenage boys birthday rather than a one year olds!
