When did your child stop napping?

Probably one of many threads about this so apologies - what age did your child stop napping? 2 year old daughter is currently showing signs of wanting to drop the nap. Even 30 minutes of sleep in the day means she is not tired enough to go to bed before 8.30pm. Isn’t too bad at weekends but not great when she has to be up at 6.15am for nursery! Just wondering if 2 is too early or quite normal? Thanks in advance

13 months 😭

DS stopped napping at 2 and a half. He was like your DD, we couldn't get him into bed until 9, so we asked the nursery to stop letting him nap. He's now sleeping 8pm - 7am every day.

sunlightflower · 08/06/2020 19:40

DD stopped completely at 2 years 11 months, she had a few months before that though where she would refuse the nap several days a week. It was a shame to lose that time in the middle of the day but made bedtime much easier.

I don't think it's that unusual to stop at 2, I have friends whose children stopped napping around 18 months!

2 1/2 and nearly 3. Sounds like I was lucky!

My DS is 2 years 4 months and still has naps. He went through a phase around the age of 2 where he thought he was ready to drop the naps but we persevered and had a couple of weeks with no naps but he soon settled back into a routine. Think they say that even if they lay down in the cot/bed for some quiet time it can help them.

CostaCosta · 08/06/2020 19:49

Ds1 2, ds2 is 21 months and I feel we are almost there!

Elmo311 · 08/06/2020 19:52

As soon as he turned two in May he started taking longer to go down for his nap, then having a shorter nap and not sleeping again until after 8pm!

It hasn't even been that long but I miss the nap so much! I've got a 14month old as well so when they were both sleeping it was bliss and the time I used to get things done!

Plus point is that they both go down for the night at 6:30pm now, so it does feel worth it!

GrumpySausage · 08/06/2020 19:53

My DS stopped at 3 years 2 months (2 weeks after his sister was born Hmm).

My DD is nearly 2 and is showing no signs of dropping it yet. Hopefully.

INeedNewShoes · 08/06/2020 19:57

DD stopped napping reliably at around 21 months. For a while after that she'd nap a couple of times a week in the car or bike trailer but really, from 23 months it became a very infrequent thing, maybe once or twice a month. Now at just turned 3, it's a once in a blue moon thing Hmm

DearTeddyRobinson · 08/06/2020 20:08

Both mine dropped their naps shortly after their second birthday. If they did sleep in the day then it would be gone 9 before they fell asleep at night.
It does make for a loooong day but they were so shattered at bedtime we would get 13 hours straight out of them Grin

ListenLinda · 08/06/2020 20:08

DD is 3 years & 2 months and has 45-mins to an hour a day. She is a little sod pot otherwise but then we have to make sure she burns off some energy otherwise she isn’t ready to go to bed at 8pm. I wouldn’t mind if she dropped it totally but she is very full on and energetic and I use the time to recharge 😂

crusheddaffodils · 08/06/2020 21:14

DS dropped his final 40-min nap around 20 months. DD1 had a 2-hour nap until 2.5 years.
DD2 is almost 15 months and she still has 2 naps of 1 hour 20, so I'm hoping we are a while off not having any!

BertieBotts · 08/06/2020 21:17

I think between the second and third birthday is normal. I can't remember exactly how old DS1 was but he was somewhere in that range I think.

It's entirely cultural though so you could probably get the nap to continue if you want to! American children all seem to keep napping until they're about four or five!!

SandieCheeks · 08/06/2020 21:21

DC1 was coming up to 4 before they dropped it completely, but wasn't napping every day by that point just a few times a week.
DC2 had to stop napping by about 27 months or they wouldn't go to bed before 10pm.
DC3 is about 3 months off turning 3 and still naps 1.5 hours almost every day.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 08/06/2020 21:23

22 months and it just about broke me. They were long, long days.

Orangedaisy · 08/06/2020 21:26

Dd1 still had a nap 5 days a week until she was 4 years 3 months. And slept through (making up for lost time from not sleeping through for 2.5 years). DD2 stopped napping at 20 months-massive surprise!

gigi556 · 08/06/2020 21:27

My son who just turned 3 last week decided to drop his nap as soon as lockdown started 😭 That said, he'll have the odd nap here and there but only really if he gets walked around in the pushchair.

CoodleMoodle · 08/06/2020 21:33

DD(6) was 2yrs 3mo. A week or so earlier I'd read something that said that was the average age, and told DH. We worked out when that was, and I swear that she refused to nap from the day she turned 2yrs 3mo. That's typical of DD, tbh! And she didn't slowly drop it or anything, she went from having 1.5 - 2hrs every day, to nothing. It was a shock to the system for all of us! But she coped extremely well.

DS is 2 in July (exactly one month!) and has gone from 2hrs to 1hr over the last few weeks, with a few days of not having a nap at all. I reckon it's partly down to not getting enough exercise... He always goes up into his cot at naptime, but if he's not asleep after 1hr I get him out again. He doesn't usually cry, just chats happily. But if he does nap then we have to go for a very, very long walk in the afternoon to wear him out for bed! He's a demon on the days he doesn't sleep, but is asleep in seconds at bedtime, so there is an upside.

It's a hard time, but you do get used to it and all of a sudden you can't imagine them ever napping! Both my DC sleep through for the most part, DS does 7:30pm - 7:30am (and DD did the same when she was his age).

Maryann1975 · 08/06/2020 21:36

Ds stopped napping the week before his second birthday. Dd was still napping as she started reception, aged 4 years 10 months. She continued to nap at weekends and through the holidays through reception.
I’m a childminder and have know children drop their naps at any point between these ages, it’s rare for them to drop them completely Much before 2 though and I’d say quite rare for them to be napping as much as dd at nearly 5!

Letthemysterybe · 08/06/2020 21:39

Both of mine dropped their nap as soon as they turned two. Occasionally I would put them down if they were tired and emotional, but I would always regret it later that night when they wouldn’t go to sleep until 10!

BendingSpoons · 08/06/2020 21:47

DD napped until nearly 4. It was amazing! From about 3.5 we had to be more careful to wake her or she wouldn't be tired at bedtime. We are still mean now (4yr 2mo) and make her have quiet play time in her room. It's the only time she stops talking to us - she still talks to herself Grin

DS is 15mo and practically falls asleep in his high chair at lunch most days. Long may his nap continue!

Bedtime is 7.30/8 and wake up is 6.30-7.30, so reasonable night sleep.

PatchworkElmer · 08/06/2020 21:51

He was 2.5. I get quite nostalgic when I think of him napping 😂

NoWuckingForries · 08/06/2020 21:53

DS was 18 months, I was gutted.

Seeline · 08/06/2020 21:53

Both of mine were 18 months.

DappledThings · 08/06/2020 21:54

DC1 about 3.5. Now at nearer 4.5 will still sleep in car home from nursery about once a week.

DC2 is 2.5 and still doing a solid two hours.
