did any of you go for a normal bed straight away and not a toddler bed or a particularly low bed?

DS was 19 months when we put him in a normal bed with no rails/guards. Just put a folded duvet on the floor in case he fell out. He only fell out twice and it didn't wake him because of the duvet.

Mine went straight on a futon from moses basket. We don't have stairs to fall down, so I just made everywhere moderately babysafe and left itat that. They didn't get up much and when they did, it was mostly to come in to our bed or to potter about their rooms for a bit. I think if I lived in a house, I'd just put a stairgate at the top of the stairs. My thoery is that because they could get out of bed whenever they wanted to it wasn't a challenge so they didn't try!

normal single bed - quite high off ground with bed guard - no problems

I had the toddler beds from the White Company - they are sleigh beds so the children haven't fallen out. I have had 4 children though so have got my money's worth with them.

(I have just splashed out on some Aspace furniture for dd1 - it's lovely).

fwiw I found it was much easier to move the children before they were 2. I have left moving dd3 until she is 2.5 and she is an absolute nightmare - the others seemed to stay in their beds when I put them there.
