did any of you go for a normal bed straight away and not a toddler bed or a particularly low bed?

dd2 went into a double bed when she was under 2.

Lizzylou · 21/06/2007 11:12

DS1 went in a normal size single bed with Tomy bed guard at 14mths. He is very squirmy and kept banging himself on the cot bars, had no problems at all and we all got much more sleep
DS2 is 15mths and doesn't squirm so much in his sleep at all, so no rush to get him into a bed.

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 11:14

that's the problem we have with ds!

I love sleigh beds because they look beautiful and story book, but they also work fantastically to stop children falling out. Like this one cgi.ebay.co.uk/PINE-CHILDS-SLEIGH-BED-WITH-MATTRESS_W 0QQitemZ160128381109QQihZ006QQcategoryZ122763QQssPageNameZWD VWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

My daughter went into a sleigh bed at one.

Aloha · 21/06/2007 11:16

My kids tend to stay in bed tbh. DD has a brief episode of trying to escape but we were mean and shut the door and after a bit of howling she climbed back in, pulled up the covers and went back to sleep!

BonyM · 21/06/2007 11:17

DD2 has an Ikea extending bed (the metal one) which is great as it has slightly raised sides at the top and bottom to prevent her from falling out, and it will also extend into a full size single so should last her a while.

Best of all worlds imo. (It looks nice too! )

BonyM · 21/06/2007 11:19

Oh - and dd1 went into a normal single at about 2 but did fall out several times so I had a spare duvet on the floor to cushion the fall!

wishingfourgotone · 21/06/2007 11:22

My dd is one and sleeps better in my moms spare bed than in the cot (which she uses to play peepo over the rails and not sleep)
does she need a bed rather than cot now? my mom cant remember how old we were going into beds!
Is the suggestion to get single bed with rail rather than toddler bed should the single be a low one? she can get down off our divan (an its super tall one of those super space age mattresses)She cant get on our bed but has started to climb up and onto the sofa!
Any advice is good advice thanks in advance

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 11:24

is she just one or is she a few months older than 12 months?

i would say go for a normal bed and put a spare duvet and some pillows on the floor (this is what we will do) but wait until she can climb in and out. that way if she decides to climb out in the middle of the night she would be able to get back in.

Ooh horsewoman, ds's bed looks like that only in pine - so, so cheap from ebay.
I love the Aspace catalogue. But so expensive!

Aloha · 21/06/2007 14:00

I want the pink gingham armchair too!

TheArmadillo · 21/06/2007 14:07

ds went onto a mattress on the floor at 10 months and then a very low cot bed.

He got a full sized bed for his 2nd birthday.

We have never used a guard rail.

redtoenails · 21/06/2007 14:16

normal bed, no bed sides but the cot mattress on the floor beside the bed.

3littlefrogs · 21/06/2007 14:18

Just got back from shopping - not ignoring you.

He was about 13 months and it was a normal bed.

oooggs · 21/06/2007 14:19

ds1 was 1.8 when we took the sides off the cot bed as he kept climbing over them. We used a bed guard after I got sick of him falling out of the bed, his bedroom is above ours so we heard it.

At 3 he went into a proper sized bed (as we needed the cotbed back) and we ditched the guard then. Does often fall out now.

mummymagic · 21/06/2007 14:23

All you with tinies in beds/mattresses:

Do you put a stairgate on the door? Or how do you ensure they are actually safe at night (I am already paranoid she has managed to fall out of a window when we are asleep and she is in cot...)

Am really wanting to do this (have wanted to for ages) but need to know she is safe - obviously. She is a very active, wriggly, inquisitive baby. A climber too - so could easily climb in and out.

oooggs · 21/06/2007 14:28

you can put a stairgate on the door, or at top of stairs. Depends if she can open doors to other rooms

NAB3 · 21/06/2007 14:29

My daughter went in to a bed at 18 months. A regular single bed with a bed guard. We had to as she climbed out of her cot.

wishingfourgotone · 21/06/2007 14:33

dp going to love me when he gets paid next week getting new pushchair and bed with rail and stairgate(x3)!

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 14:40

redtoenails - how old?
