Is SMA White ok for an 11 week old baby?

my lo is 11 weeks tomorrow, she's been on SMA gold since birth, she'd had a few problems with it, it seemed to be upsetting her tummy & i'd planned to change her onto a different brand ... however, she seemed to settle down before i'd actually decided on a new milk & was fine for a few weeks.

the last few days she's got more unsettled again, and her poos are really splatty & she's really farty again!! plus, she'll seem STARVING, then seem like she doesn't like the milk, can't really be bothered to finish it & grumble all the way thru her feed ... then be hungry again sooner than she'd due her next feed, if that makes sense?

i think i'd like to try her on a hungry baby milk now (as i definitely want to try her on a different type now, and i don't want to have to change to 'hungry' in another months time), its not too soon is it? it seems like she just can't be bothered to drink the amount of milk that she needs to fill her belly??

i hope that all makes sense, i'm a sleepy woman today, yaaawn!!!

Well don't do it again

Great minds think alike.

stripey knickers- what makes you think that about aptamil?

notdoneyet · 26/05/2007 19:16

I have always given water and dd3 will take anything from 4oz to about 8oz a day, and still take all her milk feeds. although this does vary day to day, like today she has only had 3oz of water, and i know she will not have anymore now as she is getting ready for bed. I have done the same with all 4, and we have never suffered from constipation which is usually associated with ff babies. my sil would not give water and she tried nearly every formula on the market, and my nephew was very constipated. he only really got better when he was on solids and having water with meals instead of milk.

if they are constipated or it is very hot you should offer water, but if not there isn't really much point in giving it until they are on solids and need it.

my ds was and still is the same. he will take 3 hours to drink a bottle by which time he has finished he is ready for another.

is there any proof switching formula lots will harm babY? i think its a bit of a red herring. we use cow and gate organic but it is hard to get sometimes so if we haven't been able to get it we use something else and its never affected him.

Hungry baby takes longer to digest than the first stage milk so gives a false feeling of fulness for longer rather than actually being more filling if that makes sense.
It may be worth taking your HV advice if you feel the SMA.
At 11 weeks splatty nappies sound normal to me and both my babies have constantly farted.

If you feel SMA is the problem it might be worth buying a few different brands in a few days worth of ready made rather than buying a whole pack and wasting it and seeing how you get on.
I agree wth the oster that said she sounds like a little and often feeder rather than upset tummy from the milk.

The myth about changing formula being bad for the baby was made up by the formula companies t stop you switching brand and sticking with one only so they get the cash.

allgonebellyup nneds to just be ignored rather than having anything constructive to offer you can always rely on one person to prove their ignorance and insensitivty on threads like this. I would like to know how she wouls have felt if someone had turned round and said actually no i don't have breasts I had them removed during cancer treatment which is the case for a friend of mine who was made to feel awful for ff. People should think before they suffer their appalling cases of verbal diarrhoea

I'd like to add that I was offended too, both for Amanda and for myself.

I'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that I've failed to establish either breastfeeding or breastmilk through a course of events - didn't quite get the hang of it to start, baby and myself with him taken back into hospital at a week old because of weight loss and jaundice, kept in for 8 days, finally let out on "home leave" - fortunately he put on more weight in 2 days at home than in the last 3 in hospital and still more in the 3 days following. Now, he won't take to the breast and I'm not prepared to risk any further failures that lead to such a need for or scale of medical intervention again.

I would give anything for better bfing advice and support for me at the beginning, this is a hospital which is very pro-bfing in policy and puts lots of resources into helping, but I still didn't get quite the right help at quite the right time, plus there was a small but significant difference of opinion between me and my partner.

Sorry to hijack your thread Amanda, as well as that you've been exposed to such insensitivity.

LoveAngel · 29/05/2007 10:34

You're wasting your time even bothering to be offended by numbskulls who judge people according to whetehr they breastfeed or formula feed. Fuck 'em. Do what's right for YOU and YOUR child.

My ds was on SMA white, then SMA gold and finally on Aptamil at about 4wks, which really seemed to suit him. Local MW reckoned a week to try and see the effect.

I agree with most of the other posters in that you should maybe try a few and see how your baby copes. I was a constant visitor to Boots whilst i wrestled with different bottles/teats

I also wanted to add that bottle feeding wasn't a choice that i (and lots of other women) willingly took . I really wanted to bf, and the guilt plus pressure from the hospital was horrendous - which led to feeding problems for my ds.

Thanks for all the replies ... i have changed her formula, but not to SMA White, i'm now trying Cow&Gate Comfort ... so far she's doing great on it (its been 2 days so far), she's less pukey (which surprised me, i thought was just a 'sicky baby') & she seems fine!! ... plus, she shocked the hell out of us by sleeping from 9pm-7am the 1st night she had it!!!! last night it was 11pm-6.15am, also VERY nice, i hope it continues!!

As for the old BFing debate, i don't feel guilty for FFing ... i could have tried & tried & tried, but y'know what? i deserve to be happy too, so i did what was best for both of us & YAY for that!!!
