Is SMA White ok for an 11 week old baby?

Amanda01 · 26/05/2007 12:13

my lo is 11 weeks tomorrow, she's been on SMA gold since birth, she'd had a few problems with it, it seemed to be upsetting her tummy & i'd planned to change her onto a different brand ... however, she seemed to settle down before i'd actually decided on a new milk & was fine for a few weeks.

the last few days she's got more unsettled again, and her poos are really splatty & she's really farty again!! plus, she'll seem STARVING, then seem like she doesn't like the milk, can't really be bothered to finish it & grumble all the way thru her feed ... then be hungry again sooner than she'd due her next feed, if that makes sense?

i think i'd like to try her on a hungry baby milk now (as i definitely want to try her on a different type now, and i don't want to have to change to 'hungry' in another months time), its not too soon is it? it seems like she just can't be bothered to drink the amount of milk that she needs to fill her belly??

i hope that all makes sense, i'm a sleepy woman today, yaaawn!!!

Don't feed it..

I had no problems with SMA (used gold and white). Luckily ds took to them.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 26/05/2007 13:40

The troll that is..not the baby! lol.

lulumama · 26/05/2007 13:41

if she is not that bothered about feeding, and is grumbling, hungry baby milk might not be the answer...it is heavier, takes longer to digest, but for a baby who is not that hungry, can give them belly ache

i would look at switching to a different first formula, rather than a second one. but to be honest, formula is pretty much the same..

she might be experiencing a growth spurt and wanting to feed little and often, some babies are just like that, regardless of what milk

allgonebellyup....telling people to chill out,. when you are discussing something as sensitive as breastfeeding (or not) is a bit counterproductive...the OP is not going suddenly start breastfeeding an 11 week old...

I don't normally do this but I have reported allgonebellyup to MN.
I don't know much about this (DS is 7 now) so I don't know why I clicked on the conversation ... was shocked to read that offensive post so I reported it
If it had been me when DS was 11 weeks I would have been devastated with that comment ....
DON'T justify your reasons for formula feeding please, you don't need to

deestingsduznotappen · 26/05/2007 13:49

allgonebellyup shame on you! I'm still bf at 6 months, but would NEVER criticise the decision ot bottle feed!

You are giving breastfeeders a bad name, and I really wouldn't blame a mother for not wanting to be like you!

Amanda01 · 26/05/2007 13:49

Haha, chill out?? thats priceless!!! it always amazes me how brazen & stupid people can be over the internet ... as they say, 'if you've not got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!!!' ... buh bye now!!

she had a major growth spurt a couple of weeks ago, she'd put on 2lb in 2 weeks this seems different.

i'm not sure why, i'm just not keen on switching the milk too often. i'm hoping to delay weaning until at least 5 months if not the recommended 6 months ... so i was expecting to use hungry baby milk eventually ... hence my thinking that i'd change to a hungry baby milk now, rather than switch now, and switch again later.

maybe i should carry on with what we're on, she did settle down again before, maybe she will again.

If you switch now Amanda, then you have no 'one more step' to go to before weaning. Using hungrier milk them can help you delay weaning until the recommended time!

deestingsduznotappen · 26/05/2007 13:52

Der, - using hungrier milk THEN

meto · 26/05/2007 13:53

no you don't have to justify BF or FF - as i've said all along, as long as baby is fed and you and baby are both happy where's the problem? the important thing is finding what works for you. tbh re the formula I chose SMA as it was hte most popular if you like, DS wouldn't drink cow/gate, but after talking to jarm on MSN she recommended farleys that they used for their 2, I tried it and it worked for us.

a friends DD thou can only have the aptimal one. so it really is trail and error to an extent - doesn't really help that thou.

think all is a troll who needs to grow up and go back to her school work. I BF for 9 month (mixed fed for the last 3) and wouldn't change either, but there's no point stressing either way as I say as long as it's working baby's feeding etc it's doing what's best for you at hte time.

meto · 26/05/2007 13:54

re the weaning thing, that's mainly why I statrted to use the hungry baby he was having the solids but it wasn't enough with the normal milk - I think cos he stopped as many milk feeds if that makes sence so that's when I switched.

NineUnlikelyTales · 26/05/2007 13:56

Amanda01 don't feel you have to justify your decision to ff. I haven't any advice re the formula choice but I hope you get it sorted soon.

Lovecat · 26/05/2007 14:48

To the OP - I had to stop bf at 7 weeks (medical reasons) and dd developed horrible constipation, hard, bloated tummy and mild reflux on formula - I was recommended Cow & Gate's Omneo Comfort (it's just called 'Comfort' now) which is formulated for easier digestion - it's a thicker milk and you have to make it with boiling water then leave it to cool, so it's a bit different from normal formula - and it really helped her with her discomfort. Before that she was on Aptamil, then we tried HIPP Organic for a fortnight, but it made no difference to her.

Hope this helps. Please ignore the troll - some sad people are utterly lacking in manners or sensitivity.

Mercy · 26/05/2007 15:01

Amanda. I completely agree with Lulumamma's advice.

nappyaddict · 26/05/2007 15:16

the thing is every formula is different for different babies. there isn't a one suits all. so unfortunately you do have to just keep switching around. we used hipp organic but switched to cow and gate organic cos the hipp one made him constipated.

Leslaki · 26/05/2007 15:38

Your LO can have hungry formula - my ds was a real hungry monster and was on SMA white at around 6 weeks and had to be weaned at 9 weeks (HV advice). he was drinking 9oz bottles of SMA white every 45 mins so we had to do something! baby rice didn't seem to harm him at 9 weeks - he's 5 now, still a skinny malinky and eating us out of house and home! DD on the other hand only suited aptimil and was weaned at 16 weeks. Just shows different things for different babies, bu by all means try the white, won't do any harm. Why not buy some of the wee cartons then you could try different formulas if the first one doesn't work>

notdoneyet · 26/05/2007 17:01

Hiya, I changed my dd3 from sma gold to sma white at 6 weeks, she had a brief illness (nothing to do with the milk) and she was starving and wanted feeding constantly, as she was catching up on the milk she hadn't had (if that makes sense)

All my other 3 were on sma white by the time they had reached 6 weeks, never had any trouble with wind/colic. Although I always give cooled boiled water, as sometimes they are not always hungry and could simply be thirsty.

hope that helps

lulumama · 26/05/2007 18:01

yes, LO can have hungry baby milk, doesn;t mean they should !

but reading Amanda;s OP, i don;t think this is a hungry baby.. i think this is a baby who wants to feed little and often, and that is fine for her ! My dd was like this, and could fuss over a bottle for an hour and take 2 ounces...she was not a hungry baby, she liked to feed little and often !

i believe, on the little I know of Amanda;s situation, hungry baby milk will not solve this problem

lulumama · 26/05/2007 18:03

and bottle fed babies, do not, as a rule require water, unless it is very hot! the milk, when made up according to the instructions will provide food and water, IFYSWIM

their tummies are tiny , no point filling it with water

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/05/2007 18:06

Aptimil is the formula which has the composition closest to breast milk so this may be easier to digest. Might be worth a try.

NannyL · 26/05/2007 18:08

in answer to original question its fine and suitable from birth

princessmel · 26/05/2007 18:09

ds was on Sma and switched to C+G. He was constipated on sma.
I do think some babies simply prefer different types.

Also my ds was a nightmare feeder
he'd take over an hour to drink a few ounces , like lulumamas baby. He just didn't like milk.

Have you changed the teat. Maybe its too fast or slow and the poos are to do with something else.

BTW allgonebellyup. Very hurtfull post.

lionheart · 26/05/2007 18:13

Did the same switch Amanda01 and it worked fine.

Mercy · 26/05/2007 18:14

Amanda, what size teat are you using?

my first child went through a phase of not being not interested in feeding; when I increased the teat size it was easier and less frustrating for her.

(whilst still agreeing with Lulumamma though!)

princessmel · 26/05/2007 18:15

snap mercy.

Mercy · 26/05/2007 18:15

Haha princess, I started to type my post and then got distracted!!
