Excessive sweating in a newborn. Nephew just taken to hospital...

Any one know what excessive sweating in a newborn could be due to?

My nephew is 10 days old and has been sweaty for a couple of days, but didn't have a temperature and seemed quite happy and feeding etc.

Brother just called me to say they've been told to take him to the hospiral straight away.

Anyone know what it could be due to???
I'm so worried now. I've been reassuring them it's nothing.

they will do a sweat test as it could be cystic fibrosis dont know if you have it in the family at all, my youngest sis((16) was diognosed with it at 4days old she kept bringing up her food and was very sweaty, dont remember how long she was in an everything i was only small she has to have tablets every day and at every time she eats she constantly takes antibiotics and steroids you can find out more on cysticfibrosistrust.co.uk hope you nepwhew ok if it is cf with medication theres no reason he couldnt be a happy baby! Please do not worry. It can be cardiac related but feeding well is a good sign. Hope all is OK.

If it turns out to be Cystic Fibrosis (which it probably wont) please feel free to post back here and message me, my son was diagnosed age 2.7 a few months ago so i can give you any info you would want.

But anyway think positive, i'm hoping for you family that he is fine and home soon. xxx

i wasnt going to mention the heart

dd1 was very very sweaty as a newborn, would wake up soaking, she has a very minor leaking mitral valve diagnosed before xmas 2006 when she was 6yr old. Its so minor it doesnt affect her (but makes me worry)

I'm anxiously waiting to hear from them now.
He's been a longed for baby who'vr they waithed years for and we've all been so overjoyed at his arrival it seems to make it all the more worrying.

TBH if the dr thought it were cf i should think they would proably just make an emergency appointment for a sweat test and with a peadiatrician/specialist rather than taking him strieght in as a sweat test takes a few days to come back anyway.

My brother has phoned and they are waiting in A and E to see a Dr.

They sound totally frazzled they were just getting to that exhaution hitting striggling with bf stage anyway and now this. I just pray that everything is OK.

Outraged, I just wanted to say I hope it is only something minor like a horrid cold and that the poor little chap is on the mend soon, awful at any time but more of a worry when it is the first child as I was completely at sea with DC1 >

I'm going to sleep with the phone next to my head just in case they ring in the night, but I expect it will be morning when I hear anything.

I'm hoping it's just over anxious first parent syndrome, and litigious fearing docs responding.

I'm really hoping that, but am so scared. Children bring a constant element of fear with them...the fear that something could happen to them.

(I'm SmileysPeople BTW can't seem to change my name back)

I think you should go and get some sleep so that you can do whatever is required to help them tomorrow. When I hope they and the little chap head home probably with a grey hair or two but a well baby! Fingers crossed all will be well.

Hope its nothing too major, if it should be cardiac though, feel free to give me a shout, I work as a volunteer for two childrens heart groups and can put you ( and them ) in touch with the right people. Though the fact he is feeding well is a very encouraging sign, as feeding probs are one of the signs.

It could be a milion and one things, trouble being that when you google you only find the really horrible scenarios. Am hoping that its just one of the minor probs xxxx

Hi.
They are still in hospital and have to stay in for 5 more days to be monitored.

They have been monitoring his heart but don't think there are any problems there. They are testing his sweat but haven't said for what. Obviusly I haven't mentioned it to them but from info on here I suspect they are testing for Cystic Fibrosis.

Brother and SIL are being upbeat and are confident that there is nothing much wrong, but of course we all have that fear that there might be.

If it were cystic fibrosis, is that manged effectively with drugs. Are children who have this generally healthly (with the drugs) and lead normal lives?

I don't know much about it. It just sounds a very scary word.

Outraged, I would think that given the little chaps age they are being very cautious and wanting to rule everything out. He is in the best place to treat him and you know what LO's are like he could be fully recovered and discharged by tomorrow evening Keep positive.

Thanks Smurfs. I think you are probably right. Brother and SIl are being very positive, we all are in fact, it's just on here I guess I express my darkest fear which I cannot say in RL.

But they are SO cautious with newborns and they are quite rightly checking everything out. He seems quite content, is feeding well and has put on weight after 11 days, so all the signs are good.

my sister is generaly healthy with chest physio medication and frequent hospital stays for iv antibiotics! glad they doing all tests as its a process of illimination if there is no other symptoms or family history thinking of you all
