What age did you stop using a high chair? And what did you use then?

Dd is just two, but tall at 90cm. Dp and I are both agreed that we want to get rid of her high chair (the standard ikea one) but can’t agree on what to replace it with. He wants to get her a booster seat that straps her in, but I think she’ll be fine with just one of those cushions that straps to the chair so she can reach the table properly.

He has form (IMO) for babying her too much, and he thinks I’m not being safety conscious enough. WDYD/WWYD?

Around 3. We moved straight to a booster cushion.

NannyR · 13/04/2018 20:23

Ikea do children's chairs that are higher so they can reach the table which are great for pre schoolers.

Thurlow · 13/04/2018 20:23

DS was out of his and in a decent booster seat by 1. He was fine in the highchair, I just hated having the bulky thing around.

About 2/2.5. We used to put two if the chair pads on one chair for the height.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 13/04/2018 20:23

Trip trapp

You can use them forever. You can strap them in or not, so you both win. Grin

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 20:25

About 15 months. Used a cheap plastic booster seat after but DD2 hasn’t used anything since she turned 2 (she’s 2.8 now)

TeaBelle · 13/04/2018 20:25

Dd is still in hers at 3 and a half - we don't strap her in but we o my have folding chairs and I don't trust them. She has a booster chair with straps at grandparents - you can get these and gradually use straps less

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 20:26

At a tall 2 I certainly wouldn’t bother with strapping her in. At that age mine would just undo the straps.

graysor · 13/04/2018 20:26

Dd was around 2. She just stopped wanting to get into her high chair and set herself up on a normal chair at the table. She seems fine without any kind of booster or cushion. She’s not especially tall for her age I don’t think. Sometimes she’ll sort of kneel up to get a bit more height, but doesn’t seem bothered or uncomfortable.

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 20:27

Yeah mine kneel sometimes for the height.
I can’t imagine my 2 year old in a high chair, there’s no way she’d let me put her in one!

Squaffle · 13/04/2018 20:32

We just took the tray off the Ikea high chair and pushed it up to the table. DD has just turned 2 and is also tall, but so far so good.

PrincessWatermelon · 13/04/2018 20:33

We've got the Ikea chairs that are taller. So a normal chair (smaller seat) so they can sit at the table with us. But reach it! Occasionally they fall off, but only if they're fidgeting too much!

PinkCalluna · 13/04/2018 20:34

We moved to a trip trap chair as well so that they could sit at the table.

They lasted for years and then we sold them when the kids finally got too big.

Muddlingalongalone · 13/04/2018 20:39

Dd1 - 14 months. She refused to sit in it any more because she was used to sitting on a mini table and chair at nursery.
Lived in small flat. We all used the mini table/coffee table and sat on the floor.
Dd2 was in the Ikea one til just over 3 (w/o tray for last 6 months or so) and is now on a proper chair and just kneels up.

Topsyloulou · 13/04/2018 20:43

DS was around 18 months when we stopped using the high chair at home. We used a plastic booster so he could reach the table but we didn't bother strapping him in. By 2.5 we gave up with the booster & he just sat on the chair.

cloudsblonde · 13/04/2018 20:44

DD was around her first birthday. Sits on a normal chair now and no issue.

Slanetylor · 13/04/2018 20:46

My 10 year old still uses the Tripp Trapp we got her as a baby.

CurlsLDN · 13/04/2018 20:46

We have a Tripp trapp, ds very happily still in it age 4. He doesnt see it as a high chair, it's just 'his' chair.
I'm planning for him to use it as a desk chair once he's in the homework years

PlugUgly1980 · 13/04/2018 20:52

Tripp Trapp's here too. My 2 and 4 year old both use them. Bought second hand from selling sites...money well spent but not sure I'd pay full new price for them.

BarbieBrightSide · 13/04/2018 20:57

The Stokke handysitt was great, portable, and adjustable to different chairs but from a quick search it looks like they don't make them any more, although they are available on Ebay.

We are now using the Ikea Ingolf junior chairs at the table (I sit on them to eat my lunch when the kids are at school because I'm not very tall and I prefer the eating at the table from the higher seat!) We started on them at about age 3 I think (now aged 7 nearly 8)

We use Stokke Tripp Trapp's for DC - 5 and 3 years old. They eventually turn into adult seats.

Gillian1980 · 13/04/2018 22:38

DD was 2.5 when we got rid of the high chair and we got a booster seat that strapped to the dining chair. She’s very petite and needed a good boost up so a cushion wouldn’t do it.

butterry · 13/04/2018 22:41

Tripp Trapp is brilliant, we had the Ikea one first but should have bought Tripp Trapp from the start

nevereverhaveieverfeltsolow · 13/04/2018 22:51

Nearly 4 and still use it! Not at every meal but a lot...

TheSecondOfHerName · 13/04/2018 23:00

We bought cheaper, off-brand versions of Tripp Trapp chairs for all four children. All four children (now teenagers) still use them as desk chairs.
