What age did you stop using a high chair? And what did you use then?

Dd is just two, but tall at 90cm. Dp and I are both agreed that we want to get rid of her high chair (the standard ikea one) but can’t agree on what to replace it with. He wants to get her a booster seat that straps her in, but I think she’ll be fine with just one of those cushions that straps to the chair so she can reach the table properly.

He has form (IMO) for babying her too much, and he thinks I’m not being safety conscious enough. WDYD/WWYD?

DDs are mid and late teens and still have their Tripp traps. Grin

we sold them when the kids finally got too big

How big are they? DS1 is 6 foot and still uses his comfortably. Grin

At 2 I put my little girl on to a little child's table and chairs. To me they seem to big to be in high chairs still but I know a lot of people who still do.

A 3.5 and nearly 4 year old using a high chair ...they are going to get a shock in September when they start school ...the chairs are so low!!!!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 14/04/2018 06:16

DD refused to sit in hers from 16mo so we ended up getting a Stokke Steps - love it! She's 3 now and it'll last her a good few years yet. We need to get another one for DS now though.

Makingworkwork · 14/04/2018 08:11

Nearly two year old has been out of it for a while. She is 85 cm tall (measuring her up for a balance bike) and she just sits in a chair but she is up and down at the table. It is a nightmare.

Justanotherzombie · 14/04/2018 08:18

With DC3 it was about 15mths. She wouldn’t sit in it because her big brother and sister were on chairs. So you can take from that that it’s really up to you:)

I have 2 IKEA Urban junior chairs which suit my 7 and 5 year olds fine. They've have them since ds2 was about 18 months old.

UnderTheDesk · 14/04/2018 13:29

Thanks for all the replies. Hmm, general lack of consensus though, except for tripp trapp’s Being good. Grin I think I’m going to try her on a cushion and see how we get on.

DS was out of his high chair by about 18m, although he did occasionally use it. We have a booster seat thing that straps onto our dining chairs and that he can be strapped into. I don’t use the straps anymore now he’s 2.9 but he does sit in it for all meals. I’ll probably try and get him out of it so I can use it for baby DD without him pitching a fit over his chair

CurlsLDN · 14/04/2018 16:47

icebearrocks not sure if you were talking about your own kids, or commenting that other poster's 3 and 4 year olds would get a shock at how low 'real' chairs are. If the latter, most of the older kids on this thread (including mine) are in Tripp trapps, the seat moves down incrementally as they get bigger, so it's no higher than a normal chair, like this

Mine started objecting to being trapped in the IKEA hc at about 1.5-2. We got cheap step chairs at that point which they used till about school age and still occasionally use. The seat wasn't particularly set higher than adult seats by the time they were 4, but they liked having something to rest their feet on and legs weren't long enough to reach the ground yet.

catkind · 14/04/2018 16:59

One advantage of step chairs over booster seats is that it's easier for the child to independently climb in and out. They look nice too. But depends on how much space you have.

Camomila · 15/04/2018 00:26

DS started disliking the ikea high chair around 18/20m, had a cheap plastic booster seat for a few months, but since about 23m just sits at the dining table with us on a normal chair tucked right in.

Our dining table isn’t very high though.

OlennasWimple · 15/04/2018 00:32

Ikea do a great range of junior chairs - my 8yo still prefers to use her junior chair over a normal chair

minipie · 15/04/2018 00:35

About 18 months, switched to a booster seat that strapped on to the dining chair. She's now 3 (but quite short) and some days she likes to sit in the booster, some days prefers to kneel on an adult chair.

wendz86 · 15/04/2018 14:09

Stopped using one at around 20 months with dd1 and around a year with dd2. I have a booster seat that straps onto the normal chair.

Cutesbabasmummy · 17/04/2018 16:40

We also have the Ikea toddler chair and its perfect for our 3 year old. Previously we were using the booster seat without the straps but for some reason he kept slipping off the sides of it!

penguinpurple · 18/04/2018 20:24

Dd1 is 2.5 and flits between her Ikea high chair and tripp trapp chair. I think the main attraction of the high chair is sitting next to her little brother in matching chairs.
We were at a playgroup this afternoon and she wanted to use the highchairs there, doesn't bother me particularly the only rule we have is not swapping chairs in the middle of a meal as she went through an annoying phase of this. We got a very old battered looking tripp trapp quite cheaply. I would recommend having something they can easily reach the table and rest their feet on as before we got it she was on an adult chair and she was much worse for fidgeting and messing around at the table when she wasn't comfortable.
