So what age did you buy your children their first 'real' pair of shoes?

By which I don't mean the soft shoes you can get - I mean getting their feet measured and a proper pair of shoes?

Just wondering as my friend has got her nearly 9 month old Ds a pair and that seems a bit early to me (he isn't crawling and certainly not walking yet).

dd was 5months when she had first pair crawlers (didnt crawl till 8.5mo) cruisers 8mo as she was wizzing round room with my furniture. she not long had her walking shoes as she walking outside with one hand 11mo

Ds had a pair of soft leather daisy root shoes at about 9 months when he started cruising, and they kept his socks on which was an added bonus. We had his feet measured properly just before his first birthday (he'd been walking properly for about a month).

I'm sure I read somewhere that you should leave getting proper shoes until they had been walking consistently for 4 - 6 weeks, as the bones of the feet spread slightly with the added weight and you don't get the correct width until then. Does that make sense?

as late as possible. ie when they were confidently walking and needed them to walk outside.

as jelley, health visitor advised us this, it's apparantly to do with their feet still forming and at £24 as well we were happy to wait till ds wanted to walk outside!

TheArmadillo · 16/05/2007 20:25

we got ds's about a month after he was walking properly.

Why spend the money before you need to? Kids shoes are really expensive.

When they were walking outside.

dd was walking at 11 months but didn't really walk outside for a while longer as she was a winter babe

This pretty much sums up what I thought about my friends - that there is no need for him to have those shoes and a bit [shick] at Clarks agreeing to it.

They are making him grow up SO quickly and I feel they are missing out on some lovely 'baby' times with him

that should be obviously!

As soon as they're able to walk outside.

funnypeculiar · 16/05/2007 20:33

DS got his 4-6 weeks after he'd started walking ... and will do the same for dd (or later if I can get away with bare feet - love bare feet on babies!

jo25 · 16/05/2007 20:37

ds was 22/23 months, he was in bare feet or just socks before that. He was a late walker though. Also have his feet measured every 6-8 weeks. I am however paranoid about feet and shoes! dont want him to suffer later in life with back problems, i know how hard it is.

Chirpygirl · 16/05/2007 20:48

2 weeks after she started walking. I didn't want to but we were going on a loooong train journey and she needed them to run around the waiting room safely!

Chirpygirl · 16/05/2007 20:49

Sorry, she was 14 months.

I think £20 for crawling shoes that I was advised to buy is an unbeliveable rip off!

flipflopper · 17/05/2007 18:10

I dont know how you all can remember the exact ages.
I know when my dd (my first) was about 12m mil took her to get her first pair of shoes! GRrrrr i was soooooo annoyed, she couldnt see why.

Not only was i waiting till she was walking better, I also wanted to do it myself, her being my first.

Hilllary · 17/05/2007 18:13

Erm I think dd1 was 17 months - (she was a late crawler)

DD2 has just got crawling shoes and she is 15 months (although she still wears her bobux leather ones most of the time)

Dont like to see shoes on babies unless they are walking/crawling

PregnantGrrrl · 17/05/2007 19:46

just bought Ds his first pair. He's almost 11mths and running like a loon.
