So what age did you buy your children their first 'real' pair of shoes?

By which I don't mean the soft shoes you can get - I mean getting their feet measured and a proper pair of shoes?

Just wondering as my friend has got her nearly 9 month old Ds a pair and that seems a bit early to me (he isn't crawling and certainly not walking yet).

My dd was 13 months old. She'd been walking for quite a while before I got her 'proper' shoes

tigerschick · 08/05/2007 16:48

Dd was 4 days past her 1st birthday. She was, and still is, cruising but not walking so got cruising shoes. Couldn't have got walkers even if she was ready for them as they don't make them small enough!

Shortly after they started waling. Our local shoe shop won't sell them before that. I hear the French put their children in shoes early, though

I was under the impression that it can damage their feet if they wear them too early?

Anyway, I can't say I am surprised my friend has bought her DS them at 9 months - her and her Dh seem obsessed with making him grow up far too quickly (started weaning at 3 months, in a front-facing carseat at 4 months etc) - yet everytime she mentions something, I start to wonder if I am behind (my DS is a month older than hers).

I really should have learnt by now!!!

Didn't even put him in soft shoes until he started walking and got his first shoes this month as he's now started walking outside.

meto · 08/05/2007 17:04

mine was his first bithday, had been walking from 11 months in the hosue and at tots, so I took him to clarks. he had the cruiser ones, we've jsut got the canvassey ones form start rite, but again they were measured. soft shoes - tbh I brought them but he never wore them, might have done slippers but not soft shoes.

Quootiepie · 08/05/2007 17:07

DS has just got them at 13 months - nearly bought a pair of cruisers (?) when an older shopkeeper came and said he can't walk outside in them Good job she said, I don't think the other lady believed me when I said he was walking confidently, and ready for outside walking.

Sunyshineymummy · 08/05/2007 17:09

Oh he's 13m by the way.

harrisey · 08/05/2007 17:12

dd1 - 16 months after she's been walking for a month

ds - 18 months ditto for time

dd2 - 13 months she's only been walking a week but were going on holiday and needed them.

IMO a shoe shop should not be selling shoes to a parent of a child who isnt walking, it can permanently damage feet.

lemonaid · 08/05/2007 17:15

11 months, 6 weeks after he started walking properly. The shoe shop we went to wouldn't have sold us "proper" shoes if he hadn't been walking already.

UniSarah · 09/05/2007 21:04

ds was walking with a hand for confidence when I got him fitted for clarks cruisers as he had trashed his soft shoes walking/crawling/ sit and riding outside. 2 weeks later hes waklking alone confidently and for some distance. hes staying in those cruisers till he out grows them. I don't believe the line about "not for outside" FGS why not , its not like you try to keep shoes in good nick for hand me down.

DontlookatmeImanervouswreck · 09/05/2007 21:18

Ds started walking at 14months just before Christmas and I ended up getting him shoes a few weekslater once the weather was decent enough for him to walk outside. Couldn't see the point in getting them any earlier.

FiveFingeredFiend · 09/05/2007 21:21

When they could walk

Hulababy · 09/05/2007 21:22

At 10 months when she'd just started walking. It was February so she needed proper soles to be able to walk outside. She had soft soled shoes for "walking" (well, cruising) outide before that, but didn't wear them when crusing about inside.

ChasingSquirrels · 09/05/2007 21:24

ds1 was around 12mo (walking at 10.5mo)
ds2 was around 13mo (walking at 12mo)

Lilymaid · 09/05/2007 21:25

About a month after they started walking - Clarks wouldn't sell you a pair unless the child had established walking (i.e. not first faltering steps). Why would a non crawling baby want shoes - surely it would make it more difficult to crawl?

wrinklytum · 09/05/2007 21:26

ds at 13 months,walked at 12 months
dd still waiting as she is determined to bum shuffle and NOT walk.....17 months old.Still, has saved me the cost of shoes

Alibobster · 15/05/2007 23:10

I bought ds shoes when he was 9 months, and Clarks sold them to me even though he was not walking. However, I really feel these have helped him progress and he is almost walking unaided (now 11 months). The shop assistant assured me that these would not damage my sons feet, but would get him used to wearing shoes and I do feel they've been a help rather than a hinderance

TricityBendix · 15/05/2007 23:12

When he was walking. Why need shoes before that??? How often are they cruising around on stoney paths? You don't need shoes on carpet.

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2007 23:13

First properly measured cruising shoes around 6 months. We have wooden floors, and I thought that they would help her grip the floor better, as she was trying to crawl (which she managed to do around 6.5-7 months) .
First properly measured first walking shoes at 12 months, 6 or 7 weeks after she started walking unaided (as is recommended).

hana · 15/05/2007 23:18

when they'd been walking aobut for a few weeks
silly to get any earlier
is your friend's baby her first?

mummytosteven · 15/05/2007 23:20

dd2 was 10months old

dd3 was 14months old.

all were taking their first steps or cruising outside at the point they got fitted shoes. all started with cruisers/first shoes.
