Understandably this is a very sensitive subject for many people so all answers will be treated in strict confidence.

I am asking for people to fill it in on here because I know there is such a wide variation of opinion, age and religion (I will have to hunt some males down to fill it in as well)

Because it is such a sensitive subject I will happily accept answers to my e-mail, once the answers have been noted down I shall delete the e-mail.

NO NAMES ARE NEEDED SO FEEL FREE TO NAME CHANGE ETC.

OK I shall list the questions in my next post.

  1. Do you think that the man should have as much say as the woman when making a decision about abortion?

Sex --- Female

Age --- 33

Religion --- CofE

I think I should get off the fence having re-read these answers.

Lmccrean · 22/02/2007 16:31

Hey, got my daughters father to answer it too. He tried to force me into getting an abortion with dd (he now says he regrets saying that) which will explain the slight snideness in question 2.

  1. Do you agree with the use of abortion to end a pregnancy when:

a) There is a possibility of disability in the child? Yes

b) The woman has fallen pregnant due to rape? Yes

c) The woman is in a violent or abusive relationship? Yes

d) It would cause the parent/s financial difficulties? Yes

e) The pregnancy is unwanted? Yes

  1. Do you think that the man should have as much say as the woman when
making a decision about abortion? Yes, but it is not technically possible
  1. The upper age limit for when terminations are allowed is currently 24
weeks. Do you agree with this age limit? Yes

a)If not, what would you suggest the upper age limit in weeks should be? N/A

  1. Have you or anyone you know had an abortion? No
  1. Do you think that abortions should be available for free on the NHS? Yes
  1. Do you think that abortion should be offered to someone under the age of 16
without informing the parent/s? Yes
  1. Do you believe that the morning after pill (now available from pharmacies
without prescription) is a form of abortion? No

Please briefly explain your reasoning for this
answer. The morning after pill is a means of contraception, it is a safeguard against a rash action. It cannot be classed the same as an abortion as there is no proof one way or the other that there was a pregnancy.

Sex - Male

Age - 29

Religion - N/A

LRWG · 22/02/2007 16:36

Sorry - forgot to say in Q4, that someone I know had an abortion, not me! Not sure if you need to know that.

  1. Do you agree with the use of abortion to end a pregnancy when:

a) There is a possibility of disability in the child? IT DEPENDS ON THE DEGREE OF DISABILITY - GENERALLY NO, BUT YES IF LIFE EXPECTANCY IS SEVERELY REDUCED.

b) The woman has fallen preganant due to rape? YES

c) The woman is in a violent oe abusive relationship? NO

d) It would cause the parent/s financial difficulties? NO
e) The pregnancy is unwanted? NO

  1. Do you think that the man should have as much say as the woman when making a decision about abortion? NO
  1. The upper age limit for when terminations are allowed is currently 24 weeks. Do you agree with this age limit? NO

a)If not, what would you suggest the upper age limit in weeks should be? CONSIDERABLY LOWER - MAYBE 16 WEEKS FOR SOCIAL REASONS OR 20 WEEKS FOR MEDICAL REASONS SINCE MANY MEDICAL REASONS WOULD NOT BE KNOWN ABOUT UNTIL THE 20 SCAN

  1. Have you or anyone you know had an abortion? NO
  1. Do you think that abortions should be available for free on the NHS? YES - BUT ONLY FOR MEDICAL REASONS
  1. Do you think that abotion should be offered to somone under the age of 16 without informing the parent/s? NO
  1. Do you feel that your religious beliefs influence your opinion on abortion? NO, ACTUALLY IT WAS THE OTHER WAY ROUND: MY OPINION ON ABORTION AND OTHER ISSUES INFLUENCED MY RELIGIOUS CHOICES
  1. Do you believe that the morning after pill (now available from pharmacies without presciption) is a form of abortion? YES

Please briefly explain your reasoning for this answer.......................................................................... BECAUSE IT IS POTENTIALLY ENDING A LIFE THAT HAS ALREADY BEGUN (I BELIEVE LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION) I AM ALSO AGAINST THE COIL FOR THIS REASON.

flutterdave · 23/02/2007 21:47

YES

e) The pregnancy is unwanted?
NO

  1. Do you think that the man should have as much say as the woman when making a decision about abortion? NO
  1. The upper age limit for when terminations are allowed is currently 24 weeks. Do you agree with this age limit?
NO

a)If not, what would you suggest the upper age limit in weeks should be?
12 WEEKS UNLESS FOR MEDICAL REASONS

  1. Have you or anyone you know had an abortion?
YES
  1. Do you think that abortions should be available for free on the NHS?
YES FOR 1 A-C NO FOR D AND E
  1. Do you think that abotion should be offered to somone under the age of 16 without informing the parent/s?
NO
  1. Do you believe that the morning after pill (now available from pharmacies without presciption) is a form of abortion?

Please briefly explain your reasoning for this answer..bECAUSE IT IS A COLLECTION OF CELLS WITH NO HEART IF THE WOMAN IS PREGNANT AT ALL

........................................................................

Sex --- F

Age --- 37

Religion --- CATHOLIC

sophiewd · 23/02/2007 21:59

sORRY
Q7 No would have felt like this whatever religion

nooka · 23/02/2007 22:17

a) There is a possibility of disability in the child? Yes (see e) not that I think it's necessarily the right thing, but if you know your child will be disabled and you have an informed view of the consequences, and you don't think you can cope or think the impact on your family will be damaging then that seems as good a reason as for example being in financial straights.

b) The woman has fallen pregnant due to rape? yes

c) The woman is in a violent or abusive relationship? yes - but only if it is her choice to have the abortion

d) It would cause the parent/s financial difficulties? yes because of e

e) The pregnancy is unwanted? yes

  1. Do you think that the man should have as much say as the woman when making a decision about abortion? I think that the (potential) father has every right to have a say, but ultimately it has to be the woman's decision. the idea of being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term is pretty grim
  1. The upper age limit for when terminations are allowed is currently 24 weeks. Do you agree with this age limit? yes, because it is rarely used, and mostly for late detection of abnormalities, or other extreme circumstances. However earlier and more accurate tests hopefully will continue to bring this down (waiting for scary results when you can feel your baby move would be very traumatic, I think)

a)If not, what would you suggest the upper age limit in weeks should be?

  1. Have you or anyone you know had an abortion? a friend that I know, probably more people that I knew when I was younger who didn't tell anyone.
  1. Do you think that abortions should be available for free on the NHS? yes
  1. Do you think that abortion should be offered to someone under the age of 16 without informing the parent/s? yes, because there are times when a child might be forced to continue a pregnancy, but with the caveat that lots of support should be offered
  1. Do you feel that your religious beliefs influence your opinion on abortion? maybe - as an ex-Catholic I guess my view may be stronger in reaction
  1. Do you believe that the morning after pill (now available from pharmacies without prescription) is a form of abortion? no

Please briefly explain your reasoning for this answer I see the MAP as a sort of insurance policy. You don't even know if you are truly at risk of being pregnant
