First week over - so much work (final year this year)

Keep seeing these very very young looking 1st years hanging about.

Everyone I know is walking round looking fearful whispering the words 'dissertation, dissertation'...

And with every meeting/lecture/seminar/workshop we go to getting more and more speeches on how much work we have to do and how important it is just makes it worse.

Honestly I'm loving it and yes possibly a pompous nob too

I'm not a young looking first year, i'm in a room full of them though.

I am jealous at their empty brains ready for filling, mine is in the process of being emptied of shite as i am not absorbing anything. I sit wondering what to make for dinner and will i have time to shower before my smear.

I realised that most young folk I saw today,probably weren't even born when i did my degree.

We actually have quite a few mature students on out course - some doing the degree in their retirement. Is it like that everywhere or just on my course? Its a history course btw.

I remember a slightly odd romanian (i think!) mature student who did one of my modules in first year. Cropped up again in second year. I remember she had a daughter, I though that was another world. Couple of years later I'm waiting for my own to pop out!

Of course at 23 even I think the lickle freshers are young!

I am the oldest woman.

Think it's the subject i chose though, i'm 32, so not that bad, just slightly more incontinent and stretched than the A level leavers. I can talk to boys though without wanting to shag them, which is always a bonus.

The things that seemed such a scream at 18 (days spent in smoky pubs,filthy flats,no money) now just make me shudder.
Am in and outta there (in sensible people carrier,natch)like a shot.

me and my pysio student pal ( who is 42) decided to have a mooch around the Freshers Fair at the "Guild"- got stopped by some Russel Brand wannabe when we were fleecing some pens/vouchers etc- "Excuse me" he says- " are you 'guys' freshers?"

"yes" we say- "why? dont we look 'fresh' enough?"

"im only asking, theres lots of parents (!!!) coming and taking it stuff, its all geared up here for students only" he says.

PARENTS!!!! im only bloody 28!

Loads of youngsters about though, and because of the Medical school and Law School, loads of really really posh kids, I dare'nt open my mouth in case they mistake me for someone who works in the canteen.

And we had a really cute (V.V. handsome 2nd yr physio student) come to give us a talk on our first day, god I really wished i was 18 again, He was a dream, could see all of the young girls salivating over him.

when I filled in my enrolment form, I put a few ?????? by the request for full details of GCSE's attained - er it was GCE O Levels, it was 25 years ago and NO I DO NOT REMEMBER WHICH EXAMINING BOARD EACH ONE WAS WITH FFS.

Not yet - it's all kicking off on Monday. Last time I was a mature student (age 31) I felt quite young still, tis a bit different this time (probably as I have kids now).

Are you doing a degree again then PUff or a PG thing? (I know it's all cloak and dagger.)
It was so odd for me.Felt in a srange time warp as this is uni I attended 15 years ago,so inside was just like them but am in fact respectable matron with people carrier and car seats.

I did my Ba In Critical Theory and Cultural Studies, more pointless crap you cannot find. . thats' why I loved it though...

A day of listening to jain Nuns (an Indian sect that i really do not know why we're studying as far from a world major religion), just seemed so futile and miserable an existence. These are the ones who wear fabric infront of their mouths to avoid harming microbes by breathing on them.

There are two in the UK (mosta ren't permitted to fly or travel apart from on foot), so hardly likely to bump into them on a regular basis.

The male lecturers on my course- he looks like imhotep from The Mummy TBH (htere's only one I've met so far, new chap in Sikhism to meet soon apparently) and he ahs two outfits, but two of the females and one of the males are obsessed. One of the girls has no chance as he is quiet serious and a speicalist of Islam and she's a bits out for the lads daffy cow. Chap has no chance coz well, he's a chap. other female (mature student) has a decent enough chance if only she can get her courage up.

He ins in charge of the Uni Ethics dept though so should be interesting LOL!

Ahhh, Freshers week. How many times yseterday did I have to point out to the semi literates who grace the establishment that the quiet room in the library where I was working was just that...quiet. This does not mean having mobile phone conversations in stage whispers!

There are sometimes advantages to being obviously mum like, they all shot me worried glances and shot out. I'd also like to point out that the student's union is a fab place for picking up poverty stricken students in need of a bit of babysitting cash.
