This may seem a really dim and possibly anal (no pun!) and repressed question, but I am having real trouble coming up with a word for my dd's vagina which isn't, er, vagina. Just wanted to know what you all call your childrens bits/whatsits/front bottoms (hate the last one!!) so I can choose one I feel comfortable using with her and which won't make me curl up and die if she shouts it out in public. I call her bottom her botty btw!!

Eli - I used to know a girl at school called Zizette - Zizi for short! Guess she wasn't French - I think she was from California.

I must remember to label all body parts from now on. It a vagina, no need for silly pet names. My daughter is 13 and really doesnt think its rude and not to be talked about. We are all happy to walk about naked, so dont make asumptions about me!!

harpsichordcarrier · 19/01/2006 09:56

well Auntymady I am sorry if you think I made any assumptions about you
you said you didn't think it needed to be called anything at all and that a small child could point at it
that's a different thing

Auntymandy · 19/01/2006 09:59

All I can say is I have managed 40 years and have 5 kids without having to actually name it!
Dont yopu think calling it a 'daisy' or 'foo foo' etc is going to cause more confusion, every girl in the class will have a different thing.
Maybe you name it cos you have a hang up!!
It seems people are too busy trying to 'get it right' they make issues out of everything!

harpsichordcarrier · 19/01/2006 10:01

er no Auntymandy I call it a vulva
that's what it's called
I would say calling it a foofoo is probably less confusing than having to point to it
though I am very tempted by fanjo

Auntymandy · 19/01/2006 10:04

but how often do we really need to point at it etc. We can agree to disagree!
Enjoy your daughter dont worry about labeling her bits (to all mums of girls not just you)

KeepingMum · 19/01/2006 10:07

I'm with you on the vulva front harpsichordcarrier, vagina isn't anatomically correct for anything that a little girl can see or is referring to. It would be like telling her to call it her clitoris. Although I don't use the proper medical terms with mine, ds has a willy and dd has a little bottom (don;t understand the whole argument about bottoms being degrading either), I work in a urology department so see these things all day, its far to clinical to go home and start calling them penises and labia-urethral meatus-clitoris!

shimmy21 · 19/01/2006 10:10

Friends of ours called it vagina. One day their dd loudly pronounced that her daddy (who had a goaty beard) always had a vagina on his face!!

Lacrimosa · 19/01/2006 10:12

Vagina and Penis though as I am learning anatomy i understand its not quite c orrect, I just dont want them to grow up and tell the doctor, 'my flower has a problem'

Everynight when i bath dd i sing to her... this is the way we wash our arms, wash our arms, wash our arms.... when it gets to her privates, I call it a butterfly... this is the way we wash our butterfly, wash our butterfly, wash our butterfly... she giggles a lot then.

And if you look at the general layout of a butterfly............

expecting · 19/01/2006 13:10

willy. 19mth ds learned it the first time I said it so I can't rename it now!!

Elibean · 19/01/2006 13:15

Lol, Sugarmag - hope she never went on an exchange programme!

bubbles2904 · 19/01/2006 14:32

flower, but my sil calls it tuppence

MrsWood · 20/01/2006 22:41

dd - pee pee

Melpomene · 20/01/2006 23:20

Another vote for vulva - the previous thread, back in September, helped to convince me when we were prevaricating about what to call it.

One downside is that 'v' sounds are a bit difficult to pronounce for a 2-year-old, though - dd (2.8) still calls it her 'bulba'.

And a penis is called a penis.

The other day dd was asking dh to draw various things for her: "Daddy draw a snowman... Daddy draw a cat... Daddy draw a penis" Poor dh didn't know what to do, and ended up distracting her so he didn't have to draw one.

Nixz · 20/01/2006 23:36

VULVA!!! Thats what you call it?
So do you say, c'mon darling, give your 'vulva' a little clean when in the bath??
I call it a twinkle, but i call toes - toesies!!!!
