we do it, but have friends who don't. I can really see your point, but loved that whole magic of Xmas thing myself and never felt let down when I realised he didn't really exist, just spent a couple of years acting the innocent in order to get more presents

OMG socci I could've written that post I swear. I remember being slagged off badly at school for insisting Father C was real simply because I believed there was no way my parents would ever lie. When I finally confronted them and forced them to tell the truth .... oh! ... Well it was a crisis in our relationship I can tell you.

It's tricky though isn't it because I think children want to suspend their disbelief in certain things.

I have resolved to remain vague about it. I won't lie if they ask directly, and I won't put on a big act of putting our mince pies etc.

If this was my post I would be careful about how I worded it, some of the older children of MNer,do read the screen.

My view is that Father Christmas is a load of old lies and we shouldn't do it but it's not a popular one!

I agree with you (now mine are old enough to be past it!) - I felt the same about the tooth fairy - but they do love it, don't they?

FWIW I don't remember feeling OMG my parents have lied to me. I think the information kind of filters through generally so there isn't a big shock horror revelation.

And yes we do do the whole biscuit, milk and a carrot thing but I suspect this yr will be the last time for believeing for Ds1 as he'll be nearly 7. I wonder if he'll manage to keep it quiet for Ds2+ 3

and i figure...if that's the worst thats ever going to happen to them - that they found out that their mum lied about father xmas- then i'm pretty happy

I know that spidermama but I'm sure it's the minority of kids who hate their parents for lying to them - most kids would surely think "WOW mum and dad bought all those presents for us and we thought it was FC but we don't care"!

I can't remember the day I discovered it wasn't true but it doesn't traumatise everyone the way it has you - and I don't mean that sarkily at all.

As long as you enjoy Christmas your way that's all that matters.

We're deffo in the minority socci by a long way. When I tell my friends about my feelings of betrayal over FC they actually laugh, long and hard and say things like,
'oh My god! Only YOU could possibly feel that way'. etc.

Me too. I was hurt because I'd trested them and stuck my neck out at school to defend THEM. Only to be proved wrong.

Yes - We do all of that, and don't see it as lies just a bit of fun.

I was very impressed with my parents when I found out the truth. I thought that they must really love me to have gone to all that trouble to make me believe

I was even more impressed that my big sister, who I never saw eye to eye with kept things going for 3 years after she knew, as i thought she would have taken great pleasure in telling me the truth.

I then had 5 years of making it all seem real for my younger sister, which if possible was even more exciting than believing myself
