For me: pulmo bailey cough medicine

This is what DH brought home for me today. My cough is now so bad I cough with pretty much every breath, which is taking it's toll on my already flu ridden body.

You take it in water and drink it. It smells vile and tastes even worse. Despite not eating much at the moment I actually ended up raiding DD's Christmas chocolate in rder to eat something to remove the taste from my mouth.

I am told it is supposed to the best cough medicine there is and that is does work, and will suppress the cough for a while. Well, maybe a little but not entirely that's for ssue.

Mine was a chesty cough medicine - I can't remember what brand it was, but think it was like pulmo bailey.

I refused to take it - much berating from parents. It stayed in the bathroom cabinet until one night that dad got up coughing, reached in for what he thought was Gees Linctus, got this stuff, took a swig, and threw the bottle in the bath with much swearing.... Twas hilarious

the worst I have ever had was this thick, red gloop we were given while at playgroup.

i have NO idea what it was, but we all had to have it when another little girl there died from meningitis

Milliways · 06/01/2010 19:47

I used to have to take cod liver oil daily in hospital. They followed it with a spoonful of neat ribena to take the taste away. I used to hold the oil in my mouth until the ribena came, the resulting mix was still horrible and I could taste the stuff all day.

The nurses used to threaten yu with 2 spoonfuls if they thought you had spat it out (the whole ward had it daily).

Hulababy · 06/01/2010 19:48

trixymalixy - pripsen was indeed bad. I would gag afterwards for so long. However, I now believe this cough medicine is worse!!! It is that bad.

NorbertDentressangle · 06/01/2010 19:51

Some quinine based (IIRC) anti-malaria tablets.

belgo · 06/01/2010 19:53

ginger travel sickness tablets. They made me vomit.

Choloroquine anti malerials tasted ok but made me very sick.

LetmethroughpleaseIamadoctor · 06/01/2010 19:55

Anyone remember Milk of Magnesia(Sp)?, I think it was called that, mum used to give it me when I was little for the runs. Bleurrr. Can you still get it?

SnowMuchToBits · 06/01/2010 19:56

Chloroquine anti-malarials for me to - we ended up putting them in a spoonful of yoghurt to swallow them in the hope they wouldn't touch the taste-buds!

SnowMuchToBits · 06/01/2010 19:57

I meant me too, not me to - oops!

bamboostalks · 06/01/2010 19:57

Totally agree on pripsen trixymalixy, I still have nightmares about that, the vileness is incomparable. It makes the rest of these look like sherbet!

gaelicsheep · 06/01/2010 20:05

Lol - I opened the thread to post Pulmo Bailey and I see you got there before me. It is absolutely vile stuff but it really does work. However, amazingly you'll find you get used to it if you have it for long enough. Add as little water as you can to get it down in a couple of gulps.

Hulababy · 06/01/2010 20:11

TBF I am coughing slightly less, not on every breath now, although the sensation is still there IFSWIM.

But gosh - it is vile stuff! So glad I only put it in small amount of water as it is, going for less next time.

Mine was a threadworm medicine too - one I had as a child. It was a chalky powder you mixed with water or milk to make a milkshake. It was utterly vile and you can to drink a whole cup full of it

Activated charcoal is also pretty vile if anyone has had the pleasure of having to drink a bottle of that

thisisyesterday · 06/01/2010 20:24

yeh charcoal is nasty

fatsatsuma · 06/01/2010 20:31

Ugghh yes, that threadworm milkshake - the episode of my parents forcing me to drink it is engraved on my memory. A truly horrible 'strawberry' flavour.

Bleurghhh...

MollyRoger · 06/01/2010 20:33
  • this is my face just THINKING about theat threadworm medicine. Pripsin. To this day I cannot eat strawberry ice cream or milkshake or anything like thgat.
Oh god, the bile is rising just talking about it...
MollyRoger · 06/01/2010 20:39

thisisyesterday - is that the one which makes your wee glow orange??

I got given some cough medicine once which smelt very strongly of ammonia. It was vile....

MollyRoger · 06/01/2010 20:40

my mother used to try and feed me malt extract and cod liver oil. I used to throw it back up all over her. She only tried it for a week....

greensnail · 06/01/2010 20:42
