How do you get rid of an unwanted car?

TillyMintSpy · 17/12/2009 19:54

My mother wants to get rid of her car - it's a P reg Citroen, I think - just a small one, and in OK condition I think.

She has just had a stroke, so is not really in a position to get rid of it herself - any ideas what we could do?

She lives over 200 miles from us and the MOT is due on the 5th Jan, so just about impossible for us to sell it for her, and she is not in a fit state to do it herself.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

give it to me

makkapakkamoo · 17/12/2009 19:56

Look on yell.com for scrap merchants in her area, call one. most will gladly 'dispose' of the car for free, as they recalim their costs selling the scrap metal. only need the log book

giddyupRudolph · 17/12/2009 19:57

Do you want to sell or just get rid? Because if you just want to get rid, then call a scrap yard and they will come and collect for you.

Bear in mind though that it may be worth something to someone under the car scrappage scheme.

makkapakkamoo · 17/12/2009 19:58

or for £8.50 you can advertise it on ebay, giving current location as hers, but your email address for queries.

SleighGirl · 17/12/2009 19:59

ebay or freecycle

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 17/12/2009 19:59

I put in a 'free to a good home' ad in for my old and tragic mg midget. It went the same day!

GooberChev · 17/12/2009 19:59

Freecycle?

jeep · 17/12/2009 20:02

ask a local garage for their opinion, sometimes they might buy to sell on

TillyMintSpy · 17/12/2009 20:04

Thanks for all the advice!

We can't advertise it and leave her to deal with the buyer as her speech was badly affected by the stroke, so I guess the only option is to scrap it.

It probably is worth something as it hasn't done all that much mileage, but I don't really know as we are 200 miles away.

if you want to just get rid, the fire service are always wanting old cars to practice their rescues on, and they collect too

Marne · 17/12/2009 20:07

Where does she live, dh is looking for a run around (to use for work)?

Its probably worth something, a scrap yard would come and pick it up and maybe give her some money for it.

TillyMintSpy · 17/12/2009 20:11

She's in the North West!

I don't even know the model, but it's a hatchback. DH thinks it's an N reg, but I think its a P reg!

Well in certain areas round here you drive it to a secluded layby and set fire to it. HTH.

I would Ebay it. You'll get some money for it and your mum can treat herself with the dosh.

EldonAve · 17/12/2009 20:24

ebay
local paper

EdgarAleNPie · 17/12/2009 20:26

freecycle - someone will take ti

Meglet · 17/12/2009 20:29

Another vote for the fire service. They have to practise cutting people out of cars all the time.

Lotkinsgonecurly · 17/12/2009 20:30

Freecycle it if money not too much of an issue or scrapping it would be the easiest. Either way is probably good idea for you to drive back to yours and deal from there.

lou33 · 17/12/2009 20:56

my fire station has signs up asking for them, and other towns nearby too

TillyMintSpy · 18/12/2009 09:10

Right, I will try to find a car-scrap place... or failing that, the local fire-station!

Thanks everyone
