'polysyndeton' and 'hendecasyllable' (can't think of a reason why my dds would want to use those though - I use them in my poetry classes, but they are lovely words)

My dds both claim that babies are 'absolutely adorable', and I have no idea where they got this expression from, but you're right, it is cute when a 3-y-o uses it!

I've taught 3 and a half year old ds1 all about pentagons and hexagons hoping he'll randomly drop them into conversations. Also taught him about the gibbous moon (in between a half moon and a full moon) which he likes talking about.

I use these almost every day to kids who have no idea what they mean. So they get to extend their vocabulary as well as get a telling of!

Attempted to explain 'democracy' to my dd (5) today. (She asked me to explain Guardian cartoon... hmmmm a toughie!)

Same dd knows what an apostrophe is and what it's for, but calls it a 'retostroffy'

(It's not an English word, but - going back to the poetic theme - I love and adore the word 'sdrucciolo' and always teach my students what a 'sdrucciolo line of poetry is' (a line where the stress is on the antepenultimate syllable, hence a normal hendecasyllabic line gets to have 12 syllables instead of 11.... are you all with me?) just so I can say the word 'sdrucciolo' a few times (and even though the poets I teach don't actually use sdrucciolo lines). I know, I know... I am one sad individual!

PS Did you like the way I got the words 'antepenultimate' and 'hendecasyllabic' into one sentence there (not to mention the glorious - and quite possibly egregious - 'sdrucciolo'!!!

Meggymoo, how about restoring 'gay' to its original meaning? I've been reading Enid Blyton with my dds (The Faraway Tree) and there are some spiffing words in there...!
