Things that cheer you up in the winter that don't cost much

OK not exactly full winter yet but I really miss being outside and generally out and about, festivals, camping etc ... I woke up this morning, it was raining, cold and we haven't got much money and I couldn't think of anything to do that I would look forward to.

What do you do on days like this that doesn't cost much? Suggestions please even the small things - they are sometimes the best. (btw moving somewhere warmer is not an option!)

Have a film day!Pull the curtains light lots of candles dvds and pjs all day and sainsburys do a huge bag of cinema popcorn in the basics range and it is excellent!

Chocolate, just chocolate and accepting it would be misery until spring.

Hole up with papers and magazines.

for you or the family? i went for a run this morning in the wind and rain and the colours of the leaves on the ground were astonishing. running in the rain keeps you cool and dramatic weather just makes it all more exhilarating. just getting outside, getting some fresh air and daylight helps i find.

Jumpers hide my belly and bum a bit .

Sofa + blanket + magazines or a book + cup of tea (doesn't last long with children running around)

I love having tealights and scented candles. Its still pretty dark here up north and dosent seem as if it will get much lighter today so a good excuse to have the candles on now! Ive got older dcs by the way so no safety issues.

Oh yes, a hot bath, reading a magazine.

Make your house nice. I always get a revamping vibe after the Autumn half-term - a sort of winter hibernating thing. I want everything clean, tidy and cosy for staying indoors.

Get out and go for a nice bracing walk even if it is raining and cold and windy. Just wrap up warm and wear boots. Make sure you have some soup or similarly warming meal waiting at home for afterwards. You'll feel so good after it.

I also really like stocking up the freezer and larder with warming foods - stews, soups, mince meat for Christmas etc. That will fill a few dull winter's days.

French onion soup.

Curling up on the sofa with a good book and a bar of chocolate when dd goes down for her dap. 3 hours of bliss!

Buy new wellies and thick sweaters and hats and gloves and scarves so that going outside is more fun.

Hot chocolate with a shot of Baileys in it.

We had this last night whilst outside watching the fireworks.

Trip to the library, stock up on good books, followed by trip to the shop to buy veg for soup and fresh crusty bread. Make soup, leave on stove, go for a walk (even in the rain, it makes coming home seem so warm and comforting!) and come back to soup, crusty bread and butter and books.

Actually, I think that's what I'm going to do now.

Being inside when it is lashing down outside.

Having a hot chocolate and hot buttered toast when you come in.

Sunny cold mornings.

The quiet of falling snow.

Eating lots of winter food like casseroles.
