Is it just me or do others wish they didn't have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the thread to add a comment. I don't know if having broadband makes it easier but on the PC I use it can take ages for the thread to open up and for me to be able to scroll down to the comments box. It works the same for when I want to add a new conversation into a topic as if it is in the Other topics it takes ages before I can get down to the create a new conversation.

I thought I would see if anyone else thought the same thing before I asked Tech if they could maybe change it. If it's just me then I'll let it be but if it's not I'll ask tech to see if they can do something about it.

I'll ask tech if they can sort out my long windedness at the same time.

Mum2Toby · 08/05/2003 21:30

I'll find out. If so I'll see if they can sort out dh, ds and the cats. I of course don't have that sort of wind!!!

Meamum - I meant yes please to sorting out the post message problem, NOT your long-windedness......... not that I think you are long winded.... I'm going to shut up now and go to the YURT.

meanmum · 08/05/2003 21:37

M2T - I did think you meant tech but now am taking exception to your post and am stomping off to the rival Yurt to repair my hurt soul. Don't worry I can't stay mad for long you've promised to share the full fat muffins and cream for my coffee.

Mum2Toby · 08/05/2003 21:46

The YURT is WAAAAAAAY too hot for me at the moment!

soothepoo · 08/05/2003 22:38

Look above the latest message - it says:

MUMSNET TALK

Mumsnet Discussions:

Click Here to add a message.

Click there and it takes you straight to the box!

Or have I misunderstood your question?

tech · 08/05/2003 22:57

I saw my name in the message list....

I think the issue for people on slow connections is that they have to wait for the whole thread to display before that "jump" link at the top works. if the box hasn't displayed yet, you can't jump to it.

I've thought before about "paging" long threads, so if you came in and there were more than say 20 messages you'd just see the last 20 with a "show the rest" or "show next 20" link at the bottom.

Dunno what people think about that. Hmm.

soothepoo · 08/05/2003 23:12

Meanmum, I hope you don't think I was stating the bleedin' obvious - I know I can look at things without really seeing what is there, IYKWIM.

meanmum · 09/05/2003 11:50

I didn't think you were stating the obvious. I'm just stupid and didn't even see those little things Tech had already added in.

I do like your idea though tech. Mind you I like the idea on a different thread about putting the smiley faces etc somewhere so we could just click on them to add them. Can we do this as I want to add them and even though I keep looking at the part of the site that tells me how to do them fail miserably. I am useless though and obviously incompetent as others can do them.

Tech, could you please consider switiching over to an Ulimate Bulletin board, the whole guestbook thing drives me mad on some of the longer threads!

GillW · 09/05/2003 12:58

Personally, I think this site would lose a lot of it's appeal if you went for a UBB approach. One of the great things about this site is that you can see at a glance what's going on in a number of different subject areas at once, and the "messages since" feature is what makes the site work so well. Without that it would lose a lot of it's spontanaity. You only have to look at other sites which use UBB to see that they don't have the sense of community this one does.

katierocket · 09/05/2003 13:01

errr...being thick - but what's an UBB?

JanZ · 09/05/2003 13:09

If a UBB is what I think it is, then I'm NOT for it! One of the reasons I gave up on Babyworld, UKparents and Babycentre in preference for Mumsnet was becasue I liked the way you could "see" all the discussions, get a feel for what was being said (and if it was of interest to you) and see what's been posted most recently across the full range of discussions.

The way the discussions "morph" you can't assume that the "topic" is what is currently being discussed!

katierocket · 09/05/2003 13:18

I still don't understand exactly what it is!

pupuce · 09/05/2003 13:21

I agree with Jan and Gill and this is why I only use Mumsnet and not the others !

kmg1 · 09/05/2003 13:44

I have no idea what UBB is either.

I do think Tech's idea of I've thought before about "paging" long threads sounds helpful. Though we've just got broadband so it's superspeedy for us now anyway.

Bobsmum · 09/05/2003 14:09

Every night, I have to fight dh to use our computer because he's always posting on nthellworld . (ie a site for everyone completely cheesed off by their NTL service - v funny ) I have to say I really like their way of posting and keeping track of threads - they've also got way more smileys than us.

SamboM · 09/05/2003 14:11

Blimey that looks so confusing to me!

eefs · 09/05/2003 14:21

tech, sorry, I prefer having the complete thread on one page, it makes it easier to get the gist of the whole conversation instead of the last few messages which may be off the point. Can we keep it the same?

Marina · 09/05/2003 14:26

Another vote NOT to have the UBB system here - I think annoying though long threads can be, it is so nice to be able to get an overview on Mumsnet. Agree that other sites such as Babyworld are no quicker to load and in fact far more confusing with UBB...

katierocket · 09/05/2003 14:43

will someone please tell me what UBB is?

meanmum · 09/05/2003 14:47

I just want to say thanks to Tech and Mumsnet. THis is the only site I know where we can have an open forum with tech discussing the merits of the site as they are or aren't. I love the fact I know they are listening, taking on board the comments made and weighing up the options before making a decision.
