Stonehenge daytrip from London?

DN (darling nanny) would like to know best/easiest/cheapest way to see the stones. Is it best to take train somewhere local where with connecting bus service? Stonehenge webbie crap.

Salisbury by train I'd have thought and then a bus. Bit of a PITA of a journey though, unless she's going alone, is she?

I would stay in Salisbury if I were you. Stonehenge is in the middle of nowhere really so unless you are driving, once you have walked around the stones you are stuck!!

There is a regular bus to the stones from Salisbury and Salisbury is a lovely town

salisbury is fab and loads to see too. Old Sarum is worth a visit too and thats just outside.

I've always wanted to go to Old Sarum - is it good? I go past the castle on the way into salisbury but cant see over the hill!!

She'll be going with her young man. Def just for the day.

I've just managed to dissuade her from a trip to Southampton apologies if you live there and love it bcs she wanted to visit the Titanic Museum

The stones are actually a huge disappointment, you'll see all there is to see within about 10 minutes. Some of the National Trust local walks are interesting, though, across to the Cursus and the Kings Barrows. I'd also recommend Old Sarum.

Avebury much nicer than Stonehenge.

You can book coach trips to Stonehenge though if thats your bag

Avesbury is lovely too - the whole village is built inside stone circles, silbury hill is there too.

Yes, I agree that Avebury is a better bet if it's the stones she's interested in. Much more to see, more atmospheric. You can get to Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, The Sanctuary and a load of other monuments very easily.

It depends on what she wants to see though, it she wants to see Stonehenge then Avebury won't do will it?!

Swiperfox, my dad always used to say "I find Wiltshire, I don't know, spooky" !

Swiperfox - Old Sarum is great - you can park and look at the cathedral ruins without having to pay, and then see if you think it's worth crossing the drawbridge into the castle (just under £3) I think.
We were there at the weekend for a dragon trail. They have a Romans day, a Viking day and a Childrens festival coming up soon, so worth looking out for them.
Bakedpotato - the bus to the Stones goes from outside the train station so easy to get there and back. Then it's a quick walk into town / to the cathedral.

Swiper, we used to slid on our bums down the side of the moat at Old Sarum as children! Great views from there too (which I didn't appreciate until I was an adult, obv!)
