DN (darling nanny) would like to know best/easiest/cheapest way to see the stones. Is it best to take train somewhere local where with connecting bus service? Stonehenge webbie crap.

Blu - Old Sarum was the original Salisbury, and there are the ruins of the castle / cathedral and a couple of the other dwellings still there. As WWW said - good views over the area as well.
Swiperfox - you've missed the dragons! It was a St. Georges Day tie - in. Loads of kids running round with shields and swords yelling 'I've found a dragon Mummy' They did an Easter egg hunt there too, but we went to the one at Old Wardour castle - thats a lovely place to visit as well if your dd is into castles, and Portchester castle (between Portsmouth and Southampton).

swiperfox Old Sarum is great and they do some brillaint events there. We go every year to the one at the end of August. This year they are creating a viking longhouse there and having a big battle at the weekend. Its great fun. the romans also do some good shows there too.Check out the English Heritage website.
