1 kg? sorry about stupid question, but still have all the pregancy fat...also don't want to diet, so will carry on eating what i want, reasonably healthy with treats!

depends how much you are eating and how fast you run! Personally, I'd start by running every other day or 3x a week, you'e be more likely to keep it up. Plus you need rest days.

Umm to be honest not a great deal.

Firstly its unlikely that going from no exercise to 30 mins running a day is feasible. I would say you would be more realistic to aim for 3-4 sessions building up by alternating running & walking. However by itself this will only burn up about 200-300 calories each time, so I do think you will need to cut back on some of the treats to start losing weight.

viggoandjavier · 30/03/2009 21:31

i have already jogged for a week and am now getting into it. appetite hasn';t increased as i eat quite a bit.

i started with 5mins and by day 7 i was on 30mins. not completely mad.

better not to do every day, your body won't get a chance to catch up with your improving fitness. come to sport and exercise topic and find out about how to get into running - couch-5k is a good one.

viggoandjavier · 30/03/2009 21:33

i shudder at the idea of cutting on treats...

I found I didn't lose any weight when I first started running, I had to diet as well.
Have a healthy, well balanced diet and then you're good work won't be undone!
I need to get back into running, it does clear your head, doesn't it?

viggoandjavier · 30/03/2009 21:35

wonderful for the head....

I enjoyed running and I felt better for it and toned up but I put on some weight. Didn't lose any until I reduced my calore intake.

fishie · 30/03/2009 21:39

if you are doing 3.5hr per week (or aiming to) then you could be around 35k a week.

you could do that in fewer outings but longer runs, which would probably do more for you. but you'd have to build up to it.

fishie · 30/03/2009 21:41

oh i don't think you'll lose weight either. might change shape.

Flum · 30/03/2009 21:45

Have never lost weight by running either. It really does improve your shape though - so you do look slimmer.

wannaBe · 30/03/2009 21:45

in order to lose weight you have to be burning more calories than you're consuming. If you're not prepared to cut out treats then it's unlikely you'll lose weight.

Lizzylou · 30/03/2009 21:46

I started eating healthier after I had been running for a while, I followed Slimming world and the weight dropped off, before that I was toned but no weight loss.
I lost about 2 stone in 2 months running about 35-40km per week and doing slimming world.

Theory is if you eat 2000/xxamount calories a day and you run every day and use 300 calories whilst you are running and then another 150 calories in the next two hours as you will continue to burn extra calories for up to two hours after you have finished running.

Then 450 x 7 =3150.

One pound in weight is worth 3500cal

So in one week you could tec lose one pound.

It is so much easier to put on isn't it - a mars a day will creat 300 calories which equals 2100 a week, add that to three extra buscuits and viola, an extra pound on each week. Before you know it in 14 weeks you can be a whole stone heavier

viggoandjavier · 31/03/2009 10:00

lol, thank you girls! no way i am going on a diet, i think going on a diet will make me obsessed with food and i will put on more weight. will carry on running as it makes me happy.

titchy · 31/03/2009 10:21

Running everyday is quite a strain on your joints - how about alternating cycling and running? And don't just stick to 30 mins running - if you run 3 times a week build up to making one of your runs an hour long. And for serious weight burn try interval running for another of your 30 min runs. Horrible!

madwomanintheattic · 31/03/2009 10:27

i never lose weight running. i always put it on as the flab disappears and i build muscle. it makes me laugh every time. i do change shape however, which is good enough for me. that said, this time i am eating more sensibly too, as i think i'm now at the boundary of maximum permissible weightage lol. and 'everything must go' or something.

OrmIrian · 31/03/2009 10:27

IME you need to run for more than an hour to lose weight. I'd go for 3 or 4 longer runs personally.
